Discord Age Requirement: 13, 16 or 18?

Discord's age requirement is 13, but in some countries you need to be as old as 16. Age-restricted servers and content are for adults, and in the UK you have to confirm you're 18 before Discord will switch off its teen filters.

Discord asks for your birthday when you sign up, and it uses that answer for more than a yes or no at the door. Your age group decides which servers you can join, which settings you start with and whether you can stay on the app at all. Here's how it works, straight from Discord's terms and help centre.

The minimum age

Discord's terms say that by using the service you confirm you're at least 13 and meet the minimum age set by the laws in your country. Its help centre spells out what that means in practice: you must be at least 13, but in some countries you may need to be as old as 16. Discord asks you to confirm your age group so it can apply the right minimum for your region.

The three age lines that matter

AgeWhat it means on Discord
Under 13Not allowed. Accounts found to belong to someone too young are permanently suspended
13 to 16 (depending on country)The local minimum. Below it, the account isn't allowed in that country
Under 18Teen defaults apply, and age-restricted servers and content stay closed
18 and overAdult access, once your age group is confirmed where Discord requires it

Why Discord might lock you out

Here's the catch most people only find out the hard way. Discord's help centre says that if it learns you may not be old enough to use Discord, your account will be permanently suspended. That can happen if you enter a birthday that's too young, even by mistake. If you're old enough, Discord lets you appeal and confirm your age group, so it isn't the end of the road, but it's a hassle you can avoid by entering the right date the first time.

Discord's terms also say it may use third-party services to check whether you're old enough to create an account or reach certain features or spaces. So age checks can come up after sign-up too, not only at the start.

How it works in the UK

The UK is the clearest example of age-based defaults. Because of the Online Safety Act, every UK user gets updated default settings: automatic content filtering to reduce the chance of teens seeing harmful content, and different social settings. To see flagged content or change those settings, a UK user has to confirm they're 18 or older through Discord's age assurance, found under User Settings and then Account Status.

The everyday app still works without that step. Discord says UK users with these protections can still message friends and server members, join servers that aren't age-restricted and make voice and video calls.

If you're a parent

  1. Check the minimum age in your country; it may be higher than 13.
  2. Make sure the birthday on the account is real, because the defaults depend on it and a wrong one can get the account suspended.
  3. Look at Discord's Family Center and its Guardian's Guide, which Discord's terms point parents to.
  4. Talk through which servers your teen joins, since large servers can expose content to a lot of people.

My verdict

The number to remember isn't just 13, it's whatever your country requires, up to 16. Enter the real birthday, because a wrong one is the fastest way to lose an account permanently. If you use Discord alongside other chat apps, the same caution applies there: here's how to block someone on Telegram and how to report someone on Telegram if a teen needs to shut down unwanted contact.

Frequently asked questions

Is Discord 13+ or 16+?

Both, depending on the country. Discord's minimum is 13, but its help centre says in some countries you may need to be as old as 16.

What happens if you're under 13 on Discord?

Discord says that if it learns you may not be old enough, your account will be permanently suspended.

Can I appeal a Discord age lock?

Yes, if you're old enough. Discord's help centre explains how to appeal and confirm your age group.

Do UK users have to verify their age on Discord?

Only to access flagged content or change the default filtered settings. That needs confirming you're 18 or older through Discord's age assurance in User Settings and Account Status.
