How to Use WhatsApp on a Smartwatch (Wear OS and Apple Watch)

To use WhatsApp on a smartwatch, install WhatsApp for Wear OS from Google Play on the watch, then enter the eight-character code it shows into WhatsApp on your Android phone. You need Wear OS 3.0 or later and the same number as your phone. iPhone users use WhatsApp for Apple Watch instead.

WhatsApp on your wrist is handy for quick replies when your phone's in a bag or on charge. On Wear OS watches there's a full WhatsApp app that links to your phone, and it can do more than show notifications: replies, voice notes and even calls. There are a few rules about which phones and accounts it works with. Here's how to set it up.

Set up WhatsApp on a Wear OS watch

  1. On your watch, open Google Play and install WhatsApp.
  2. Keep your Android phone nearby, ideally connected to Wi-Fi.
  3. Open WhatsApp on the watch. It shows an eight-character code.
  4. On your phone, enter the code in WhatsApp and confirm.
  5. Wait for your chats to sync to the watch.

Who can use it

WhatsApp lists a few requirements, and they matter before you buy a watch for this:

  • Wear OS 3.0 or later. Older watches aren't compatible, so check your watch's software version before you start.
  • An Android phone. WhatsApp says you can't link a Wear OS watch from an iPhone.
  • The same number. The watch must use the same phone number as your phone.
  • Not WhatsApp Business. WhatsApp says you can't link a WhatsApp Business account to Wear OS.

The business limit is the one that catches small business owners out. If your customer chats run through WhatsApp Business, the watch app won't show them.

iPhone and Apple Watch

If you use an iPhone, WhatsApp points you to WhatsApp for Apple Watch rather than the Wear OS app. The set-up is different, but the idea is the same: your watch works alongside the WhatsApp account on your iPhone.

Your watch counts as a linked device

WhatsApp lets you link up to four devices to your main phone at once, and it lists WearOS among them. So if you already use WhatsApp on a laptop, tablet and web browser, adding a watch may take you to the limit. Remove a device you no longer use if you need room.

Not getting notifications on the watch?

  • The phone isn't linked yet. WhatsApp says this is the usual reason for missing notifications. Redo the code step.
  • Syncing is still running. Linking can be slow if you have many contacts or recent messages, so give it time on Wi-Fi.
  • Watch notifications are muted. Check the watch's own notification and Do Not Disturb settings.
  • You've hit the device limit. Unlink an old device and try again.

Unlinking a watch

If you sell or replace your watch, unlink it from WhatsApp on your phone, in the same linked devices list you'd use for a computer or tablet. That stops chats syncing to a device you no longer have and frees up a space under the four-device limit. It's worth doing before you factory reset or hand the watch to someone else.

Battery and privacy on the wrist

Syncing chats, images and voice messages uses battery on both the watch and the phone. If battery life matters more than wrist replies, mute busy chats so they don't sync constantly. And remember a watch screen is easy for people nearby to glance at, so think about whether you want message previews showing in meetings or on public transport. Your watch's own settings usually let you hide previews while keeping the alert.

Tips for using WhatsApp on your wrist

  • Use voice replies for anything longer than a few words, because typing on a watch is slow.
  • Mute busy group chats so your wrist isn't buzzing all day long.
  • Use reactions for a quick acknowledgement when you can't give a full reply yet.

Since the watch is one of your linked devices, my guide to using WhatsApp on iPad explains how linked devices work more generally, and scanning a WhatsApp QR code covers linking a computer.

My verdict

On a Wear OS 3.0 or later watch with an Android phone, install WhatsApp from Google Play and link it with the eight-character code: you'll get chats, voice notes, reactions and calls on your wrist. iPhone users need WhatsApp for Apple Watch instead, and WhatsApp Business accounts can't use the Wear OS app at all.
