To unfollow someone on LinkedIn, click the three dots on one of their posts in your feed and choose Unfollow, or open their profile, click More and choose Unfollow. You'll stop seeing their posts, but you stay connected, and LinkedIn doesn't notify them. Manage everyone you follow from My Network, People I Follow.
Unfollowing is LinkedIn's polite way of saying 'I don't need your posts in my feed'. You stay connected, they're not told, and your feed instantly gets quieter. It's the right tool for the colleague who posts motivational quotes hourly, or the contact whose updates just aren't relevant to you any more. Here's how to do it from a post, a profile or in bulk, and how to undo it.
Unfollow from your feed
- Find one of their posts in your feed.
- Click the three-dot More icon on the post.
- Choose Unfollow [name].
That's the quickest route, because you can do it the moment a post annoys you.
Unfollow from their profile
- Go to the person's profile.
- Click the More button in the intro section.
- Choose Unfollow.
Review everyone you follow
To tidy up in one go, click the My Network icon, then People I Follow under Manage my network. You'll see the list of people you follow; click Following beside a name to unfollow them. On your phone, tap My Network, then Manage my network and People I follow, then tap the three dots next to a name and choose Unfollow.
Unfollow versus remove connection
| Action | What happens | Are they told? |
|---|---|---|
| Unfollow | Their posts disappear from your feed; you stay connected | No |
| Remove connection | You're no longer connected | LinkedIn treats this as a separate action |
LinkedIn is clear that unfollowing doesn't affect the connection. They can still see your posts, message you and see you in their network, so it's the gentle option for people you want to keep in touch with but not hear from daily.
Changed your mind? Follow again
LinkedIn keeps a list of people you've unfollowed. Click Me, then Settings & Privacy, Account preferences and Site preferences, open People you unfollowed and click Follow beside the name. Bear in mind LinkedIn does notify people when you follow them again, so they may notice you're back.
Following people you're not connected to
You can follow people without connecting, which is a good way to keep up with industry voices you don't know personally. LinkedIn says you can follow up to 5,000 people who aren't your connections, so there's plenty of room. Following someone shows their public posts in your feed without a connection request.
Curate a feed that's useful
- Unfollow people whose posts you scroll past every time.
- Follow a handful of experts, voices in your industry and clients you want to stay close to.
- Engage with posts you value, which helps LinkedIn show you more like them.
- Check People I Follow every few months and prune.
When unfollowing is the right call
Unfollowing suits people you want to keep as connections for business reasons, a former colleague, a supplier, someone you met at a conference, but whose posts don't help you. It's also useful during busy periods when you want a focused feed: unfollow the noise for a few months and follow back later. It isn't the answer if someone is rude or makes you uncomfortable. In that case, removing the connection or blocking is the better route, and LinkedIn has separate help on both.
Unfollowing on your phone
The LinkedIn app works the same way. On a post in your feed, tap the three dots and choose Unfollow followed by the person's name. On a profile, tap More in the intro section and choose Unfollow. To see everyone you follow, tap My Network, then Manage my network and People I follow. It takes seconds, so it's an easy habit to build while you're scrolling on the go rather than saving it for a big clear-out.
A quieter feed helps your own posts too
There's a side benefit. When your feed is full of people and topics you care about, you're more likely to comment on posts that matter to your business, and thoughtful comments are one of the best ways to get noticed on LinkedIn. A cluttered feed makes you scroll past everything. A curated one turns LinkedIn back into a place where you find clients, ideas and opportunities.
Will they ever find out?
LinkedIn says the person isn't notified when you unfollow them. They might notice you no longer react to their posts, but there's no message or alert. If you later follow them again, LinkedIn does notify them, so think twice before flip-flopping.

Unfollowing companies and pages
The same idea applies to company Pages: if a Page's updates aren't useful, unfollow it from one of its posts. It keeps your feed focused on the people and topics that help your business.

My verdict
Unfollow from the three dots on a post or the More button on a profile. You stay connected, they aren't told, and your feed gets better straight away. Use People I Follow for a periodic clear-out, and People you unfollowed if you change your mind.
