User Interviews works by matching your participant profile to paid research studies, mostly interviews and online tasks for companies, and paying an incentive once the researcher confirms you completed the study, usually within 10 business days. The detail many people miss: its own incentives come as digital gift cards through Tremendous, not cash, PayPal or a bank transfer.
User Interviews is a research recruitment platform: companies use it to find people to interview or test their products, and participants get paid for their time. It's straightforward, but the payment rules and country list catch people out. Here's how it works, from User Interviews' own support centre.
Getting set up
- Create a participant account.
- Complete your profile fully. User Interviews uses it to match you with relevant studies.
- Verify a mobile phone number. It's required, and landline, WiFi and VoIP numbers aren't supported, because study alerts come by text.
- Apply to studies that fit you, answering screener questions honestly.
Getting picked more often
User Interviews says linking your LinkedIn or Facebook profile can increase your chances of being selected, because researchers may find a verified application more trustworthy, some prefer participants with an online presence, and a LinkedIn profile that matches their recruiting criteria makes you easier to choose. You can connect either from the banner on the Browse studies page, or add your public LinkedIn URL under Professional details when you edit your profile.
Before each session, check your setup: a stable internet connection, an updated browser or operating system, a charged device, and a working microphone in a quiet space if you'll be speaking. User Interviews' own feedback guide recommends exactly these checks, because technical problems eat into the time a researcher has with you.
Which countries can join
User Interviews only accepts participants from a set list of countries, so check before you spend time on a profile:
| Region | Countries accepted |
|---|---|
| The Americas | Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico, Puerto Rico, United States |
| Asia-Pacific | Australia, India, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore |
| Europe and Africa | Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom |
India is on the list, but Pakistan, Nigeria and the Philippines aren't, so participants there can't join yet.
Who pays your incentive
Every study's incentive is distributed in one of two ways. If the study offers a choice of dozens of digital gift cards, User Interviews pays it through Tremendous. Any other incentive type means the researcher pays you directly, in the form listed for the study. UserTesting studies taken through User Interviews are paid by UserTesting, 14 days after you complete them.
When you get paid
User Interviews says you're paid the full incentive once the researcher confirms the study was completed, which can take up to 10 business days. Which date starts that clock depends on the study type:
| Study type | The 10 business days start on |
|---|---|
| Live session | The date of your session |
| Unmoderated task with a task window | The day your task link expires, not the day you submitted |
| Unmoderated task with a study deadline | The deadline, even if you finished early |
Finishing early doesn't speed things up, because researchers still get the full window. Business days are Monday to Friday, excluding US federal holidays, and some researchers list a longer timeline in the study details. If your study still says Confirmed, the researcher hasn't marked attendance yet.
Redeeming through Tremendous
For User Interviews-paid studies, select Redeem incentive in the email from [email protected], or find the study under My Studies. You'll go to Tremendous to choose your reward. Three rules to know first:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Cash, PayPal and bank transfers aren't offered for these incentives.
- A Visa option needs your address.
- You can't change the reward or currency once you've redeemed, so check both carefully.
Session rules that protect your pay
- Give at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule, or you may face a penalty.
- Arrive on time. Researchers can withhold payment or cancel if you're late, and repeated late arrivals can count against you.
- Wait the full 10 business days before chasing a missing incentive; support can't contact the researcher before then.
Tax
US residents whose User Interviews payments reach the IRS reporting threshold in a year get a 1099 by January 31, and must complete a W-9 in Tremendous before redeeming more incentives. Incentives count as income when they're issued, not when you redeem them, and researcher-paid incentives aren't included in that total. Participants outside the US, or redeeming in other currencies, are asked for a W-8BEN instead.
There's also a referral programme for participants in good standing: when a friend completes their first study using your link, you both earn a bonus.
My verdict on how User Interviews works
User Interviews is worth joining if you live in a supported country and can describe your work, habits or tools clearly to researchers. Complete your profile, apply selectively, turn up on time, and be ready for gift cards rather than cash on its own incentives. For similar platforms, see my guide to how much UserTesting pays and my guide to how much Prolific pays.
