Gigwalk works by showing you short local jobs from brands and retailers on a map, usually photographing shelves or checking displays in a store, which you apply for, complete within a timer and submit through the app for payment to PayPal. The detail that decides whether you get picked is distance: apply from more than about 50 miles away and you won't be approved.
Gigwalk is a retail-audit app: brands want proof their products and displays look right in stores, and Gigwalkers are the people who go and check. It's straightforward once you know how selection, timers and payment work, and most frustration comes from not knowing. Here's the process from Gigwalk's own help centre.
How a Gig works from start to finish
- A brand or retailer posts a Gig, which appears as a pin on the map or in the list view.
- You open the Gig details and tap Apply to this Gig, choosing a timeframe.
- If you're selected, you get detailed instructions.
- You go to the store, take the photos and answer the questions in the app.
- You submit, and the customer approves the work or asks a quick follow-up question.
- Once approved, you're paid to your PayPal account.
Gigwalk says Gigs take anywhere from 5 minutes to a few hours. The most common ones involve photographing products on the shelf, inspecting displays or event promotions, and answering questions about what you see.
How Gigwalk chooses who gets a Gig
| Selection type | How it works |
|---|---|
| Auto-select (most Gigs) | The system weighs your score, your distance from the Gig and the timeframe you chose; you usually hear back in about an hour |
| Manual-select | You write a short message on why you're a good fit, and the client picks, which can take longer |
The distance rule is the one to remember. Gigwalk says applying from more than about 50 miles away ensures you won't be approved, so wait until you're near a Gig before you apply.
The timer you set yourself
When you apply, you choose one of three timeframes for how long you'll take. A shorter one improves your chances of being selected, but it also sets your countdown. Gigwalk's example: pick 3 hours and you have 3 hours from applying to get there, do the work and press submit. If you're applying on a Wednesday for a Gig you can only do on Saturday, choose a timeframe of at least 3 days.
Your Performance score and how many Gigs you can hold
| Performance score | Gigs you can claim at once |
|---|---|
| 0-60 | 2 |
| 61-65 | 5 |
| 66-80 | 15 |
| 81+ | 30 |
Good work raises your score, which lets you plan routes with several Gigs at once. At the bottom tier you can only hold 2, so your first few Gigs matter: read the instructions twice, take every photo asked for, and submit well inside your timer. That's the quickest route to the higher tiers, where you can line up a whole afternoon of store visits.
Certifications
Some Gigs need a certification. You can self-assign some in My Profile, such as having a Costco membership, a valid driver's licence or the ability to lift 30 lbs. Others are earned by completing certification Gigs, which Gigwalk posts with no payout. You only submit each certification once, and it opens up Gigs that other people can't take.
When and how Gigwalk pays
All payments go through PayPal. You can start Gigs without a PayPal account, but you need one to be paid. By contract, clients have 14 full days to review your work, starting the day after you submit, and if they haven't acted by then, payment is automated. Gigwalk says most payments come much sooner.
- If Gigwalk has sent a payment and it isn't in PayPal after 24 hours, contact PayPal or raise a Gigwalk ticket.
- If a Gig asks you to buy something and says it will be reimbursed, the reimbursement is included in the listed payout unless the instructions say otherwise.
- Gigwalk doesn't issue Form 1099-MISC; IRS reporting is generally done by PayPal, and your total Gig fees are visible in your PayPal account.
Is Gigwalk available outside the US?
Gigwalk says most Gigs are posted in the US and Canada, with occasional Gigs elsewhere, recently including India, the UK, Australia, Germany and France. So you can sign up in those places, but expect far fewer pins on the map.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Readers in India should know one specific fix. Gigwalk says some users there need to upgrade their PayPal account and complete PayPal's KYC (Know Your Customer) process before payments can arrive. If a Gig shows as approved but nothing reaches you, check your PayPal account for that request first.
My verdict on how Gigwalk works
Gigwalk suits people in US or Canadian towns with plenty of shops who can pop out at short notice. Apply only when you're close by, pick a realistic timer, build your Performance score and set up PayPal before your first Gig. Outside North America, treat it as an occasional bonus at best.
