To make money on YouTube in the UK, you join the YouTube Partner Program, which UK creators can do from 500 subscribers for fan funding and from 1,000 subscribers for ad revenue. UK-specific details: payments arrive by bank transfer, the US-UK treaty can cut US withholding on your YouTube royalties to 0, and HMRC treats the income as taxable trading income.
Small business owners in Britain ask me this one a lot, usually when they want their channel to pay its way. YouTube treats the UK well: nearly every earning tool is switched on, the payment route is a normal bank transfer, and the tax treaty with the US is one of the friendliest going. Here's the full route, from first subscriber to HMRC.
Earning routes open to UK YouTubers
| Route | Open in the UK? | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Ad revenue from YPP | Yes | 1,000 subscribers plus watch hours or Shorts views |
| Channel memberships | Yes | YPP, 18 or over, not made for kids |
| Super Chat and Super Stickers | Yes | YPP, 18 or over, live or Premiere |
| Super Thanks | Yes | YPP, 18 or over |
| Shopping affiliate program | Not listed | Limited to a short country list |
So a UK channel can use ads, memberships, live tips and video tips. The Shopping affiliate program isn't listed for the UK, so if you review products, you'll be relying on direct brand deals and your own links for that side.
The two YouTube thresholds in the UK
The UK is on YouTube's expanded YPP list, which gives you an early door:
- From 500 subscribers: with 3 valid public uploads in the last 90 days, plus 3,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. This opens fan funding.
- From 1,000 subscribers: with 4,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months, or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. This adds ad revenue sharing.
YouTube also asks for 2-Step Verification, advanced features access, no active Community Guidelines strikes and one linked AdSense for YouTube account. And it may switch off monetization if a channel goes 6 months or more without uploading or posting, which catches out busy business owners who film in bursts.
Setting up UK bank payments in AdSense for YouTube
Google's payment-method table lists EFT and wire transfer as Yes for the UK in the YouTube columns, with cheque and Hyperwallet as No. EFT is a direct bank transfer, so for most UK creators that's the simplest choice: add your UK bank account in AdSense for YouTube and Google pays into it each month once your balance passes the payment threshold in your settings.
If you want to know which day the money tends to land, my explainer on when YouTube pays out each month goes through the monthly cycle.
US tax forms for UK creators
Every monetizing creator has to give Google US tax info, even in the UK. If you don't, Google may deduct up to 24% of your total worldwide YouTube earnings. Once you've submitted it, only earnings from US viewers are subject to withholding, at 0-30% depending on the treaty.
Here's the UK advantage. Google classes YPP income as 'Other Copyright Royalties', and the IRS treaty table shows 0 in the copyrights royalty column for the United Kingdom. With a valid W-8BEN and treaty claim, the US withholding on your US-viewer earnings can drop to nothing. Google won't decide eligibility for you, so check your claim if your situation is unusual, and claim by Dec. 10th as Google asks.
HMRC and your YouTube income
YouTube income is taxable in the UK. HMRC's trading allowance is a tax exemption for individuals with small amounts of trading income, including self-employment. If your gross trading income goes above the allowance, you register for Self Assessment and declare it on a tax return.
- Keep records of every YouTube payment, even while you're under the allowance; HMRC says you must keep records of this income.
- Once you're over it, you can deduct the allowance instead of your expenses, but if your expenses are higher, claiming expenses may work out better.
- Brand deals, gifted products and membership income all belong in the same records as ad revenue.
I'd talk to an accountant once your channel earns regularly, especially if YouTube sits alongside another business you already run.

Practical ways UK small businesses earn from a channel
For most of the business owners I work with, YouTube ad revenue is the smallest piece. The bigger wins come from what the channel does for the business: enquiries, sales and trust. The ones that earn from YouTube itself tend to combine:
- Regular long videos that answer customer questions, which build watch hours and search traffic.
- Shorts that bring in new viewers, with the Shorts views route in mind.
- Memberships or Super Thanks for a loyal audience once you're past 500 subscribers.
- Brand partnerships agreed directly and clearly disclosed to viewers.
Live content can add Super Chat too; it's worth reading how YouTube pays for live streams before you commit to a schedule.
My honest take for UK creators
The UK is one of the easiest places to make money on YouTube from an admin point of view: bank transfers, a 0 treaty row and clear HMRC rules. The hard part is the same as everywhere, which is making videos people want. Get the US form and your HMRC records sorted at the start, then put your energy into the content.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make money on YouTube in the UK with 500 subscribers?
Yes, through fan funding. The UK is on YouTube's expanded YPP list, so at 500 subscribers with recent uploads and enough watch hours or Shorts views you can apply. Ad revenue needs 1,000 subscribers.
How does YouTube pay UK creators?
Through AdSense for YouTube by EFT bank transfer or wire, the two methods Google lists for the United Kingdom.
Do UK YouTubers pay US tax?
Google must collect US tax info from every monetizing creator. The IRS treaty table shows 0 for UK copyright royalties, so a valid treaty claim can remove US withholding on earnings from US viewers.
Do you pay tax on YouTube earnings in the UK?
Yes. HMRC's trading allowance covers small amounts of trading income; above it you register for Self Assessment and declare your income.
Is the YouTube Shopping affiliate program available in the UK?
YouTube's country list for the Shopping affiliate program doesn't include the United Kingdom.
