YouTube tax in India has two layers: Google withholds US tax on earnings from US viewers, which drops to 15% for Indian creators who submit tax info with their PAN and claim the treaty, and you then handle Indian income tax on your earnings yourself. Skip the US form and Google may deduct up to 24% of your total worldwide YouTube earnings.
When Indian creators message me about tax, the first worry is usually 'why did my payment come in lower than YouTube Studio showed?' Very often the answer is the US tax form. So let's start there, then look at the Indian side, using Google's help pages and the IRS treaty table rather than forum guesswork.
Why Google takes US tax from Indian YouTubers at all
Google says it has to collect tax info, withhold tax and report to the US tax authority when a YPP creator earns royalty revenue from viewers in the US. YouTube Partner Program income is listed under 'Other Copyright Royalties'. That's why a creator sitting in Pune or Patna still deals with a US form: the rule follows where the viewers are, not where you live.
The good news is in Google's own example, which uses India. A creator who submits tax info and claims the treaty benefit pays 15% on earnings from US viewers. Without a treaty claim it's 30% of those US earnings. Without any tax info at all, Google may deduct up to 24% of total worldwide earnings.
| Your situation | What Google says happens |
|---|---|
| No US tax info submitted | Up to 24% of total worldwide YouTube earnings may be deducted |
| Tax info submitted, no treaty claim | 30% on earnings from US viewers only |
| Tax info plus India treaty claim | 15% on earnings from US viewers only |
The IRS treaty table backs this up: its copyrights royalty column shows 15 for India.
Filling in the W-8BEN inside AdSense for YouTube
- Sign in to AdSense for YouTube and click Payments, then Payments info, then Manage settings.
- Scroll to your Payments profile, click edit next to United States tax info, then Manage tax info.
- Use Google's guide on that page to pick your form. Google says individuals outside the US generally use Form W-8BEN.
- Enter your name and permanent address in Latin characters only, as Google requires.
- Add your PAN as the foreign tax identification number and claim the treaty benefit for copyright royalties.
- Submit, then check the form status shows a green Approved.
Google says a treaty claim needs either a foreign TIN or a US TIN, and it names India's foreign TIN as the Permanent Account Number. Make sure yours is active. India's Income Tax Department says Aadhaar must be linked to PAN or it can become inoperative, and a person may hold only one PAN, so don't create a second one for your channel.
Dates and re-checks Indian creators forget
- Google asks every creator to submit tax info and claim any treaty benefit by Dec. 10th each year.
- You may be asked to re-submit tax info every three years, even if nothing has changed.
- If your address or name changes, update the form, because a wrong form can cost you the treaty rate.
- Tax info reviews can take up to 7 business days, so don't leave it until the last week.
The Indian residence certificate and local withholding
Google's tax residency certificate table lists India's document as the 'Certificate of Residence for the Purposes of Section 159 in Form 43'. You'd use it if Google asks you to prove you're tax resident in India. Google also notes that your payout can face a higher withholding deduction if local tax law requires tax to be withheld, which is another reason to keep your Indian records tidy.
Indian income tax on YouTube earnings
The US withholding doesn't replace Indian tax. Your YouTube income still belongs on your Indian return, and how it's treated depends on your wider situation, so this is where I'd bring in a chartered accountant rather than guess. What I'd keep ready for them:
- Your monthly AdSense for YouTube payment reports.
- Bank statements showing each international wire and the rupee amount credited.
- The US tax withholding figures Google shows in your Payments profile.
- Records of any brand deals or sales paid to you outside YouTube.
Payments reach India by international wire only, according to Google's payment-method table, so your bank statement is the cleanest record of what landed. If you also earn from other apps, my guide to apps that withdraw by UPI is a reminder that those payments belong in the same records.

Checking what was withheld from your YouTube income
After you submit the form, Google says you can see the withholding rates that apply in the United States tax info section of your Payments profile. To see how much of your income came from the US, filter YouTube Analytics revenue by geography. If your Studio estimate and your payment don't match, that US share and the rate on it are the first things I'd check, along with the monthly timing in my guide to when YouTube pays out.
My advice on YouTube tax for Indian creators
Do the US form the day you're accepted into YPP, with your PAN and the treaty claim, and screenshot the Approved status. That one step is the difference between losing up to 24% of everything and 15% of your US share. Then hand your payment records to a CA each year so the Indian side is done right.
