Tic Tac Toe Offline: 7 Free Noughts and Crosses Apps (2026)

Yes, tic tac toe plays offline in any of the apps here, because the game needs nothing but a grid. All seven say so on their Google Play listings. Most are built for two players on one phone, some add a computer opponent, and one shows no ads label for young children.

Tic tac toe, or noughts and crosses if you grew up in the UK, is the first strategy game most of us learn. It needs nothing but a grid, so it's a natural offline game on a phone, and it's perfect for keeping a child busy for five minutes in a queue. You don't strictly need an app at all, but a good one adds a computer opponent, bigger boards and a fair turn order, which ends a lot of sibling arguments.

I read the Google Play listings for the most-installed tic tac toe apps and kept the ones that say they play offline. They're listed in no particular order.

Seven offline tic tac toe and noughts and crosses apps

Tic Tac Toe 2 Player: XO Game (Onetap Global)

The giant of the category, with more than 100M installs on Google Play. It shows the Contains ads label but no in-app purchases label.

Tic Tac Toe 2 Player: XOXO (HDuo Fun Games)

Built around two players, online or offline, which is what most families want for a quick game across a table.

OX Game: Tic Tac Toe Games (ZeroMaze)

Its listing says the games stay ready with or without a connection. Good if you call it noughts and crosses and want the OX look.

2 Player Games: Offline (Soup Ent)

Not just tic tac toe: a collection of party games for two that its listing says you can play offline on one device.

Tic Tac Toe 2 Player XO Games (Onegame Global)

Mentions an offline computer opponent with several difficulty levels, which is handy for practising alone.

Tic Tac Toe: XOXO 2 Player (Sb Dev)

The one I'd hand to a young child: Google Play shows neither the Contains ads label nor the in-app purchases label, and the listing says no WiFi is needed.

2 Player Games: Tic Tac Toe (BiBoGames)

Simple online or offline play, with no in-app purchases label on Google Play.

Two players on one phone

Tic tac toe is the ideal pass-and-play game, because the whole board is visible and turns take seconds. Most of these apps are built around two players on one device. Put the phone flat on a table between you rather than passing it hand to hand, and let the app decide who goes first. That one setting removes the oldest argument in the game.

Playing against the computer

A computer opponent is how most people practise. Apps with difficulty levels, like the Onegame Global app, let a child win on easy mode and then discover that a perfect player can't be beaten. That's a lovely lesson in itself: in classic three-by-three tic tac toe, two careful players will always draw.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Bigger boards and variations

Once three-by-three gets predictable, look for bigger grids and variants in the app's menu. Larger boards where you need four or five in a row bring back real strategy, and they're a gentle step towards games like Connect Four and Gomoku. Some tic tac toe apps include these as extra modes, so it helps to explore the menu.

The ads catch for young children

Six of the seven listings show the Contains ads label on Google Play. For a young child, that means a stray tap can open an ad. The Sb Dev app is the one here with neither the ads label nor the in-app purchases label, which is why I'd pick it for a toddler or preschooler. Whatever you choose, turn on airplane mode while they play, and switch off in-app purchases in your phone's settings.

Setting up tic tac toe for a journey

  1. Install the app on home wifi and open it once.
  2. Start a two-player game, then switch to airplane mode and start another.
  3. Set who goes first and the board size before you leave.
  4. Turn the sound down for quiet carriages.

More quick games for no-signal moments

Tic tac toe is just the start. For screen-free fun in a queue, try guessing games for any age. If you're filling a child's tablet for a trip, my list of offline games for kids with no ads is a good place to look, and for a family evening, classic board games give everyone a turn.

My take on tic tac toe offline

Every app here plays offline, because tic tac toe needs nothing but a grid. Choose by the things that matter on the day: two players on one phone, a computer opponent to practise against, bigger boards for older children, or no ads label for little ones. And remember the pen-and-paper version works everywhere, too.
