Can You Play Clash of Clans Offline? What Supercell Says

No. Clash of Clans needs the internet. Supercell's listings on both Google Play and the App Store say a network connection is required, because your village, your clan and every attack live on Supercell's servers rather than on your phone.

Clash of Clans looks like a game you could tinker with anywhere: tap a builder, start an upgrade, rearrange the walls. But the village you see is a window onto Supercell's servers, not a file on your device. When the connection goes, the game can't show you anything reliable, so it stops.

What a dropped signal does to a Clash of Clans attack

Supercell's support team spells this out, and it's worth knowing before you start a big war attack on a train. If your connection drops mid-raid, you can still tap to deploy Troops, but the game only registers the ones you deployed before the problem started. The attack continues with those Troops alone. If your connection comes back, you can carry on.

So a raid you begin with a weak signal can end up being fought by half an army. That's a painful way to lose a Clan War star, and it's the main reason to save serious attacks for a steady connection.

Signs your Clash of Clans connection is failing

  • A warning sign on screen. Supercell says the game shows one during a connection issue and keeps trying to reconnect.
  • 'Client and server are out of sync!' Supercell says this usually means your internet connection is unstable.
  • Full wifi bars but lag anyway. Supercell notes that full bars alone don't guarantee a solid connection, especially in a moving vehicle.

Before you raid: a checklist for Clash of Clans players

  1. Use wifi with a good connection, or a solid mobile signal, for Clan War attacks and Ranked battles.
  2. Don't start an attack on a train approaching a tunnel or a car heading into the hills.
  3. Keep the game updated so you're not caught by a forced update just as war day starts.
  4. Close background apps and restart your phone if the out-of-sync message keeps appearing.
  5. Plan your army and attack route while you're offline, then attack the moment you're back on a strong connection.

Wifi or mobile data for Clash of Clans?

Supercell's advice is the same as for any online service: play over wifi with a good internet provider, or at least a solid 3G, 4G or 5G connection on a reliable network. In my experience of helping family members with this, the problem is rarely the type of connection and almost always its stability. A home wifi signal two rooms away from the router can be worse than strong mobile data by the window. If attacks keep failing in one spot, move closer to the router before you blame the game.

Can you check your village without internet?

Not in any useful way. Because the listings say a network connection is required, the game won't let you manage the village, collect resources or start upgrades offline. Everything you see has to come from Supercell's side, so the app waits for a connection rather than showing you an out-of-date village.

Clash of Clans for children: what parents should know

Google Play rates the game Everyone 10+ and the App Store rates it 9+. It carries the in-app purchases label, so set up approval for in-app purchases or switch them off in the phone's settings. The listing also highlights online multiplayer, Clan Wars and Ranked Mode, which means your child will be playing against and alongside strangers. Clan chat settings deserve a look before they join a clan.

If you want a base-building game you can play offline

What most Clash of Clans fans love is building a base and defending it. If you want that feeling on a flight, have a look at offline city-building games for iPhone or offline tower defence games. Neither has clans, but both will give you something to build and defend with no signal. For a family evening away from screens, strategy board games bring the same kind of planning to the kitchen table.

Saving storage and data with Clash of Clans

The App Store lists Clash of Clans at about 794.6 MB, and updates add to that over time. If you're tight on space before a trip, it can make sense to leave the game installed but plan to play only on wifi, rather than using up mobile data on long sessions abroad. Make sure your account is linked before you delete anything, so you're not relying on one phone to hold your progress.

My take on Clash of Clans offline

There's no offline Clash of Clans and Supercell says so on both stores. The more useful lesson is what happens on a bad signal: troops you deploy after the drop simply don't count. Plan offline, attack online, and save war attacks for a connection you trust.

Frequently asked questions

Can you play Clash of Clans without wifi?

Not without any internet. Supercell's listings say a network connection is required. Mobile data works if the signal is strong.

What happens if I lose connection during an attack?

Supercell says the game only registers Troops deployed before the connection issue, and the battle continues with those Troops.

Why does Clash of Clans say client and server are out of sync?

Supercell says it usually means your internet connection is unstable. Try wifi, close background apps or restart your phone.

Can I upgrade buildings offline in Clash of Clans?

No. The game needs a connection to show and change your village.

Is Clash of Clans suitable for children?

Google Play rates it Everyone 10+ and the App Store rates it 9+. It includes in-app purchases and online play with other people.
