Yes. Terraria is a single-player game first, so your worlds and characters play without internet on PC and on mobile. Multiplayer can work offline too: the mobile listings describe games hosted over local wifi between devices, while online co-op with friends elsewhere needs a connection.
Terraria is a brilliant game to have when the internet goes. It's a self-contained 2D world of digging, building and boss fights, and there's no live service tapping you on the shoulder. It also isn't an ad-funded game: on Google Play it shows neither the Contains ads label nor the in-app purchases label, so offline play doesn't take away anything you'd otherwise be nudged towards.
Terraria offline by platform
| Device | Single-player offline | Multiplayer without internet | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC (Steam) | Yes | Online co-op needs internet | Steam lists Single-player, Online Co-op, Steam Cloud |
| Android | Yes | Local wifi with up to 7 friends | Google Play listing |
| iPhone and iPad | Yes | Local wifi, same wording | App Store listing |
How Terraria multiplayer works without the internet
The mobile listings are specific: you can play with up to 7 friends on local wifi, or online through games hosted from one device to another, or through a Mobile Terraria Dedicated Server running on a PC. The local wifi option is the offline one. Everyone joins the same wifi network, one device hosts the world, and the others join it. The router itself doesn't need an internet connection for devices on it to see each other.
- Update Terraria on every device while you're online, so you're all on the same version, including the latest 1.4.5 content.
- Connect everyone to the same wifi network.
- One player hosts a world from the multiplayer menu.
- The others choose to join and pick the hosted game.
- If the host leaves, the session ends, so let the person with the most battery host.
Terraria offline on a PC
Steam lists Terraria as a Single-player game from Re-Logic, with online co-op and online PvP as extras. Single-player worlds live on your computer, and the game is small by modern standards, at a minimum of 200MB of storage, which makes it a good fit for older laptops on a trip. Steam also lists Steam Cloud support, so if you play on two machines, let your saves sync before you disconnect.
If you want more games in the same spirit for a lighter laptop, have a look at offline RPGs for a 4GB laptop with no ads.
Terraria offline on phones and tablets
On mobile, Terraria is a one-off download rather than a free-to-play game, so there's nothing in the game waiting for a connection to push extras at you. The App Store lists it at about 274.3 MB. The Google Play listing mentions fully customisable controls, Bluetooth gamepad support where your device supports it, and the same Small, Medium and Large world sizes as the PC version. A gamepad is well worth packing if you're planning long offline sessions on a tablet.
Picking a world size for offline sessions
The mobile listing says you get the same Small, Medium and Large world sizes as on PC. For a trip, a Small world is a sensible start: it's quicker to explore in short bursts and easier on an older phone's battery. Save the Large world for home, where long sessions and a charger are close by. If two of you play over local wifi, a Medium world gives each player room to build without tripping over each other.
Backing up Terraria worlds before a trip
Offline play is safe for your worlds, but lost or broken devices aren't. On PC, let Steam Cloud sync before you leave. On a phone, make sure your device backup is up to date, so months of building aren't tied to one handset that could end up at the bottom of a rucksack. It takes a couple of minutes and it's the single best thing you can do before a long offline stretch.
What you'll miss in Terraria without internet
- Online co-op and PvP with friends who aren't on your wifi network.
- Cloud saves syncing on Steam until you reconnect.
- Updates. New content, such as the latest 1.4.5 update, needs a download.
How much there is to do offline
Plenty. Google Play describes more than 5,000+ items, 25+ NPCs and 400+ enemies. That's weeks of digging, building and exploring with no connection at all, which is why it's such a good choice for long holidays, caravans and anywhere with unreliable broadband.
Terraria for younger players
Google Play rates the mobile version Teen and the App Store rates it 12+. There are bosses and plenty of combat, so it's worth a look before handing it to a younger child. For a calmer co-op game on one screen, two-player offline farming games are gentler options.

If you love Terraria, try these offline too
Terraria fans tend to enjoy open worlds, crafting and a bit of danger. My list of lightweight open-world games for offline play is a good place to look for more of that on devices with limited storage.
My take on Terraria offline
Terraria is one of the most offline-friendly games you can own. Single-player worlds don't need the internet on any platform, and the mobile version even supports multiplayer over local wifi, which is perfect for siblings on a holiday with no broadband. Update before you go, sync your Steam saves, and you've got weeks of play in a small download.
