Yes. Single-player Minecraft worlds play without internet, and Mojang's own FAQ confirms offline play even on the free trial. What you lose is online multiplayer, servers and anything that has to check Mojang's systems, while friends on the same wifi can still play together over a local network.
Minecraft is one of the few big games where offline play is part of how it was built rather than an afterthought. Your worlds, your builds and your Survival nights don't depend on a server somewhere, which is why it's such a good pick for holidays, long drives and patchy rural broadband.
There are a few catches, though, and they're the bits that trip families up. Here's what Mojang states on its own pages and store listings, and what that means in practice.
What Mojang says about playing Minecraft offline
The clearest official line is on minecraft.net's free trial FAQ: you can play Minecraft offline during your free trial, but multiplayer servers are disabled. The same FAQ says online multiplayer servers can't be joined in the trial while LAN multiplayer is allowed. If the trial plays offline, the full game's single-player worlds do too. Mojang doesn't publish a separate offline rule for each device, so the safest approach is to treat the first launch on any new phone, tablet or console as an online step, and everything after that as offline-friendly.
| Minecraft feature | Without internet? | Where this comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player worlds (Survival, Creative) | Yes | minecraft.net free trial FAQ (offline play allowed) |
| Playing with people on the same wifi | Yes, over a local network | App Store listing: 'Local Network' permission for same-wifi multiplayer |
| Online servers and Realms | No | Free trial FAQ: multiplayer servers disabled offline |
| The in-game store and add-ons | No | Store downloads need a connection |
| Free trial length | About 100 minutes of in-game time | minecraft.net free trial FAQ |
Getting Minecraft ready before you go offline
- Sign in once while you're connected. Minecraft is not free to download on Google Play or the App Store, and the game needs to confirm the copy belongs to your account.
- Update the app on wifi. An update on a hotel connection is the last thing you want.
- Open every world you plan to play, so you know they load.
- Download any skins, texture packs or worlds from the store while you're still online. Store content can't download without a connection.
- Turn on airplane mode at home and load a world. If it opens there, it'll open on holiday.
If you're setting up a computer instead of a phone, my guide to getting Minecraft onto a PC covers the editions and where each one comes from.
Playing Minecraft with friends when there's no internet
This is the part most people don't realise. The App Store listing for Minecraft asks for Local Network access so it can find other devices on the same wifi network for multiplayer. That means two tablets connected to the same router can usually see each other's worlds, even when the router itself has no internet. Holiday cottages with a wifi box but no broadband are the classic example.
Without any wifi at all, there's no local network to share, so each person plays their own world. If you'd rather everyone played on one screen, have a look at couch co-op games for the same room.
Why Minecraft sometimes refuses to start offline
- It was never opened online on this device. First launch is where the account check happens, so new installs need a connection.
- A pending update. If the app is part-way through updating, it may wait for the download.
- You picked a server or Realm. These are online by design. Go back and choose a world from your own list.
- Store items. A world that relies on content you haven't downloaded yet can't fetch it offline.
Minecraft editions and offline play
Mojang sells two main versions: Java Edition on computers, and Bedrock Edition on phones, tablets, consoles and Windows. Both play single-player worlds offline once they're set up. The App Store version is the Bedrock one, listed by Mojang AB at about 1.33 GB, so check your storage before a trip. On Android, Google Play lists the game at more than 50M downloads, with in-app purchases available through the in-game store.
If you only want to try the game first, the free trial is a handy option for offline play, but it's short: minecraft.net says it lasts about 100 minutes of in-game time, roughly five in-game days.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
If you want something lighter than Minecraft
It's a big game, and older phones can struggle with it. If storage is tight, my list of small open-world games that run offline is a good place to look for smaller sandbox games that still let you explore and build.
My take on Minecraft without wifi
It's one of the best offline games you can put on a family device, as long as you do the boring bit first: sign in, update, open your worlds and grab any store content while you're connected. After that, single-player and same-wifi games carry on happily with no internet at all. What won't work is anything that lives on a server, and that's worth explaining to children before the trip rather than mid-tantrum.
Frequently asked questions
Does Minecraft need internet to play?
Not for single-player worlds. Mojang's free trial FAQ confirms offline play, and the full game's own worlds work the same way once you've signed in and updated.
Can you play Minecraft multiplayer offline?
You can play with people on the same wifi network through local multiplayer. Online servers and Realms need the internet.
Why does Minecraft say I need to sign in?
First launches and account checks need a connection. Sign in once while online, then try airplane mode before you travel.
Is the Minecraft free trial playable offline?
Yes. minecraft.net says you can play offline during the trial, but multiplayer servers are disabled and the trial is short.
How much space does Minecraft need on an iPhone?
The App Store lists it at about 1.33 GB, and worlds and add-ons take extra space over time.
