Best Teleprompter Apps (2026): 10 Tools Compared

A good teleprompter app should let you adjust the text, keep the script near the camera and say clearly what the free option covers. Check how long a script it takes, whether it records and whether it follows your voice. This page lists ten options in no particular order, then covers how to choose.

Looking into a lens and talking naturally is harder than it looks. Most of us either ramble, forget the point or stare at our notes and lose the viewer. A teleprompter app puts your script on the screen right beside the camera, so you can read it while still seeming to look at the person watching.

Here's a list of ten teleprompter apps and tools, in no particular order, sorted alphabetically. Two are widely known and the rest are smaller or more specialised. I've taken every description from each tool's own website and directory listings, so check the current details on the site before you rely on one for a shoot. If you'd like a script to put in one, my talking-head teleprompter script template is a good starting point.

Ten teleprompter apps at a glance

In the free plan column, Yes means the tool's own site describes a permanent free option, sometimes with limits on script length or features. Trial only means a free trial but no ongoing free option. Free options often cap script length or hold back features such as remote control, so check that your usual script fits.

How a teleprompter app keeps your eyes on the lens

The idea is simple. Your script scrolls at a steady pace, and you read it at a glance while the camera records. The nearer the words sit to the lens, the less your eyes seem to wander. On a phone, that means placing the text at the top of the screen, close to the camera.

Hardware teleprompters add a sheet of glass in front of the lens so the text appears right where you're looking. Many of the apps here can run on one of those, and plenty of people simply use a phone or a laptop on its own.

Manual scrolling or voice-following: which suits your delivery?

There are two broad ways a script moves. With speed-based scrolling, the text rolls at a pace you set, and you match it. With voice-following, the app listens and moves along as you speak, pausing when you pause.

Voice-following sounds ideal, but it can stumble on background noise, accents or names. Speed-based scrolling is predictable, though you have to keep up. If you ad-lib a lot, try both on a short script before you decide.

What to check in a teleprompter app before a shoot

  • Script length. Check the longest script the free option accepts.
  • Text control. Look for adjustable size, speed, margins and a mirror mode for glass rigs.
  • Importing. See whether you can bring in a document or have to paste text in.
  • Recording. Decide whether you want the app to record, or just to display the script while another camera app runs.
  • Remote control. A Bluetooth remote or second screen lets you start and stop without touching the device.
  • Devices. Make sure it runs on the phone, tablet or computer you'll have on the day.
  • Offline use. If your venue has patchy wifi, check the app works without a connection.

Writing a script that sounds like you when you read it aloud

  • Write the way you speak, with short sentences and plain words.
  • Read it aloud once before you record and mark the places you breathe.
  • Break long paragraphs into lines, so your eye can find its place quickly.
  • Add a note or a blank line where you want a pause or a smile.
  • Keep a few key points loose, rather than scripting every word of a casual video.

Which kind of teleprompter app suits which user

  • Social creators usually do well with a simple phone app and a short-script free option.
  • Coaches and marketers often like an app that also records and helps with posting.
  • Presenters on video calls may want a prompter that sits on screen near the camera.
  • Studio and kit users tend to want mirroring, remote control and an output to a second screen.
  • Speakers who ad-lib might prefer voice-following that keeps pace with them.

For nerves before a live talk, my strategies for beating stage fright may help as well.

If other people appear or speak in your video, tell them they're being recorded and check whether you need their consent before you publish it. Platform rules can apply to what you post. This isn't legal advice, so check the rules for your own situation.

Why a smaller teleprompter app can be a smart pick

Smaller apps often do one job and do it well, so there's less to learn. Some are made by a single small team who reply to questions quickly, and others focus on one kind of user, such as phone filmmakers.

Before you commit, check that the app is still being updated, read its help pages and test it with a short script on the device you'll use. Make sure you can export or copy your scripts out if you ever switch.

Do you make a teleprompter app or a tool for reading scripts on camera? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

Trying out your teleprompter app shortlist

Choose two or three that match the way you work, then read the same short script in each. Compare how comfortable the text is to follow, how clearly the tool explains its limits and how easy starting and stopping feels. Keep the one that suits you and note anything you'd like to ask the maker.

Frequently asked questions

What is a teleprompter app?

It's an app that shows your script on screen, scrolling at a set pace or following your voice, so you can read it while looking close to the camera.

Can I use a teleprompter app for free?

Yes, several have a free option, though it may limit script length or features. Check what yours includes before a shoot.

Do I need a hardware teleprompter?

No. Many people read from the screen of a phone, tablet or laptop. Glass rigs make the text sit in front of the lens, which some people prefer.

Will a teleprompter make me sound stiff?

It can if you read word for word. Write the way you talk, practise once and leave room for a natural pause.

Does a teleprompter app record the video too?

Some do, and some only show the script while another camera app records. Check which one you're getting.
