To open YouTube Studio settings, sign in to YouTube Studio, select Settings from the left menu, then Channel, make your changes and click Save. Key options include country or region, audience, automatic captions, clips and third-party AI training.
YouTube Studio settings are the part of Studio most people open once, change one thing and never look at again. That's a pity, because several of them affect how your channel behaves for every video, including ones you've already published. A wrong audience setting or a clips option left on can matter more than a thumbnail you spent an hour on.
Everything here comes from YouTube's help page on managing channel settings. I've gone through each section in the order YouTube lists it, said what it does in plain English, and flagged the settings YouTube says are only available to certain partners. Your menus may be arranged slightly differently, because YouTube updates Studio regularly.
Opening YouTube Studio settings for your channel
YouTube's steps are straightforward:
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- From the left menu, select Settings, then Channel.
- Adjust the settings you want.
- Click Save.
That last step matters. If you tick a box and leave the page, the change may not stick. Check the Save button has been pressed, and reopen the page afterwards to be sure. If you manage more than one channel, make sure the right one is selected before you change anything, because settings apply to the channel you're signed in as.
Basic info in your YouTube Studio settings
The Basic info section has two items. The first is your country or region, which you choose from a dropdown. YouTube says eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program is based on the country or region you choose here, so don't set it casually or to match a holiday. The second is keywords. You can add keywords related to your channel, which is a simple way to describe what the channel is about.
Audience setting in YouTube Studio
The Audience setting is under Advanced settings, and it's the one I'd check first on any channel. YouTube says you can set an audience for your channel or for individual videos to simplify your workflow, and that the setting affects existing and future videos. If you choose not to select an audience setting, YouTube says you'll get certain restrictions and you'll be required to identify which of your videos are made for kids.
In plain terms, a channel-level setting saves you answering the question every time you upload. It also means a change here reaches back to videos already published, so choose carefully. If you aren't sure what applies to your content, read YouTube's own guidance on made for kids before you decide, rather than guessing.
Channel insights sharing in YouTube Studio settings
This section is for creators in the YouTube Partner Program. YouTube says it lets you share channel statistics, audience demographics and, if you're in the YouTube Shopping Affiliate Program, shopping performance insights with third-party advertisers, brands and platforms. The help page says the setting is off by default and you have full control to turn it on or off at any time. If you've never touched it, it's off.
Linking Google Ads in YouTube Studio settings
YouTube says you can link your YouTube channel to a Google Ads account so that ads can run based on interactions with your channel's videos, and that this also gives access to insights. If you work with a marketer or an agency who runs ads for your channel, this is the section they'll ask about. Only link accounts you understand and control.
Automatic captions in YouTube Studio settings
YouTube says automatic captions occasionally make mistakes. There's a checkbox, Don't show potentially inappropriate words, which stops potentially inappropriate words being displayed in your videos. If you speak with a strong accent, use industry jargon or have a lot of product names, it's worth reading your captions at least once, because those are exactly the places automatic captions slip.
Clips setting in YouTube Studio
The clips option is a single checkbox, Allow viewers to clip my content. YouTube says that if you deselect it, existing clips of your content will be disabled, and selecting it again re-enables them. That's a useful detail: it isn't only about future clips, it works on the ones that already exist. If you ever see odd short snippets of your videos shared around, this is the first setting to look at.
Settings YouTube says are only for certain partners
Two of the settings on the page carry a note that they're available to partners and advertisers who have the feature turned on by their partner manager or sales representative. If you don't see them, nothing is wrong with your account:
| Setting | What YouTube says it does |
|---|---|
| Channel redirect | Lets you use a shortened version of your custom URL to send your audience to another channel or website |
| Channel visibility | Lets you temporarily hide your channel, so your videos, playlists and channel details are no longer visible to viewers |
YouTube adds that, even with the channel hidden, the owner can still see their channel page, channel art and icon, videos and playlists, comments and analytics, and posts, and can make the channel visible again at any time.

Third-party AI training in YouTube Studio settings
This is a newer setting, and it's one to read carefully. YouTube says you can allow third-party AI companies to use your YouTube content to train AI models they develop. To turn it on, check the box under Advanced settings that allows third-party companies to train AI models using your channel content, then choose between selected third-party companies only, or all third-party companies. YouTube notes the settings can be changed at any time, and that there can be a delay of up to 7 days for changes to be reflected in the YouTube Data API.
There's no right answer for everybody. If your content is your business, think about whether you're comfortable with it, and make the choice on purpose rather than by leaving a box ticked.
Feature eligibility and other YouTube Studio settings
Feature Eligibility shows whether you're eligible for standard, intermediate or advanced features. YouTube says the intermediate and advanced levels need additional verification steps to keep the community safe, and that verifying your identity helps reduce abuse and spam. If a feature is greyed out or missing, check here before assuming it's a bug.
The Other settings area lets you manage your presence on YouTube and permanently remove your content. That's a one-way door, so slow down. If you're handing over a channel, transferring ownership of a YouTube channel is a different job from deleting it, and worth understanding first.
A quick YouTube Studio settings review for small channels
- Open Settings, then Channel, and check the country or region.
- Check the Audience setting and make a deliberate choice.
- Look at the clips box and the automatic captions box.
- Read the third-party training choice and confirm it's what you want.
- Click Save, then reload the page to check the changes held.
When you next publish, remember each video has its own visibility choices too. My guide to what unlisted means on YouTube explains one of them, and uploading a video to YouTube takes you through the rest.
