If YouTube picture-in-picture isn't working, check that a video is playing when you leave the app, then switch on Picture-in-Picture under the app's Playback settings. On Android, also allow it in Android settings under Apps, YouTube. Music videos need YouTube Premium.
Picture-in-picture is one of those features you only notice when it stops working. You're watching a tutorial, you swipe out of the YouTube app to follow along in a spreadsheet or a notes app, and instead of a floating video window the video just stops. It's irritating, especially if you use YouTube to learn software, follow a recipe or keep a talk running while you work.
I've gone through YouTube's own help for picture-in-picture (often shortened to PiP) and for the computer Miniplayer. YouTube doesn't publish a page called PiP not working, so there's no neat list of error causes. What it does publish is exactly how PiP is meant to start, what it excludes and where the setting lives. Most failures trace back to one of those three things, so that's how I've arranged this page.
How YouTube picture-in-picture is meant to start
This is the bit that catches people out. According to YouTube's help, you start picture-in-picture by exiting the YouTube app while a video is playing. If the PiP setting is on, the video shrinks into a small window that you can drag around the screen while other apps stay in use.
That tells you a few things about what to check straight away:
- A video has to be playing when you leave the app. If it's paused, there's nothing to shrink.
- YouTube says you can pause or stop a video before you exit to stop PiP turning on. So if you paused out of habit, that's your answer.
- The PiP setting has to be on, both in the YouTube app and, on Android, in the phone's own settings.
Turning on picture-in-picture in the YouTube app
YouTube's help gives the app setting like this:
- Open your YouTube app settings.
- Go to Playback.
- Toggle Picture-in-Picture to on.
The help page lists the same Playback route for turning it off, so if somebody else set up your phone, or you tidied settings once, this is the first place to look. Menus vary by app version, so if you don't see the word Playback straight away, look under the main Settings list.
Allowing picture-in-picture in Android settings
On Android there's a second switch, and it's the one people forget. YouTube says to make sure picture-in-picture is on in your phone's settings:
- Go to your Android settings, then Apps, then YouTube.
- Scroll to Advanced and tap Picture-in-picture.
- Make sure Allow picture-in-picture is on.
- Then go back into the YouTube app settings, open Playback and check the Picture-in-Picture toggle is on.
Both switches have to agree. If one is off, the video stops when you leave the app. YouTube's help page has an iPhone and iPad version too, and the place to start there is the Playback section of the YouTube app settings. Your iPhone's own settings can differ between iOS versions, so check the options for the YouTube app there if it still won't start.
Music videos and YouTube picture-in-picture
Here's a limitation worth knowing, because it looks like a bug. YouTube says you can use picture-in-picture across YouTube, with one exception: music content, such as official music videos, Art Tracks, children's songs or user-generated song covers, is only available to YouTube Premium members. So if PiP works for a tutorial but not for a music video, that's by design, not a fault with your phone.
YouTube adds that for Premium members, dismissing the PiP window lets the video carry on in Background Play mode.
Closing and moving the YouTube picture-in-picture window
If the window seems stuck in a corner or in your way, there are two ways to close it, according to YouTube:
- Tap the PiP window to show its controls, then tap the X at the top right.
- Drag the window off the bottom of the screen.
You can drag the window around the screen while you use other apps. If it's blocking something you need, move it rather than closing it.

YouTube picture-in-picture on a computer: the Miniplayer
On a computer, YouTube's feature is called the Miniplayer. To start it, right-click the video and choose Miniplayer, and you'll go back to the page you were browsing while the video keeps playing in a small window. YouTube says the Miniplayer isn't available for Shorts or for videos marked as made for kids. So if the option doesn't appear, check what kind of video you're on.
A few more Miniplayer details from the help page:
- Dismiss it with the control at the top right, or press Escape.
- Click Expand to go back to the full watch page.
- Drag it to any of the four corners, and drag a corner to resize it.
- If you close it by accident, reopen the video from your watch history or go back to its page.
This is YouTube's own feature, separate from any picture-in-picture controls your browser might offer, and the help page doesn't cover those.
Wider YouTube fixes when picture-in-picture still isn't working
If the settings are right and PiP still fails, treat it as a general playback problem. YouTube's streaming troubleshooting page suggests, for computers, making sure your computer is up to date, closing and reopening the browser, closing most other tabs, updating your browser and restarting your device. On a phone, checking for app updates and restarting also make sense. My checklist for when YouTube isn't working covers the common ones.
If the picture looks poor once it's in the small window, that's a separate issue, and why YouTube looks blurry on a phone is worth a read. And if you like to queue a run of videos before you switch apps, making a playlist on YouTube saves you going back in each time.
If you've tried all of this and it still won't work, send feedback from inside the app. YouTube says you can do it from your profile icon, Help and Feedback, then Send Feedback, straight after the problem happens.
