Instagram Filters Not Working? What Instagram's Help Says

If Instagram filters aren't working, update the Instagram app and your phone's software, restart the phone, then test on both Wi-Fi and mobile data. If that fails, delete and reinstall Instagram. Instagram's help also warns that a feature may not be available to everyone yet, so a missing filter isn't always your fault.

Few things stall a content day like a filter that won't show up, won't apply or freezes the camera. If you post for a business, you've probably stood there with the product ready and the lighting right, tapping at a screen that refuses to cooperate.

Instagram doesn't have a single help article called filters not working, and I'd rather say so than pretend. What it does have is a general troubleshooting article, a report-a-problem article and separate pages on how filters and effects are used. I've put them together in the order Instagram suggests, quick checks first.

Telling Instagram filters from camera effects

It helps to know which one has stopped working, because Instagram uses different tools for each.

  • Filters are the colour looks you apply to a photo or video after you've taken it. Instagram's help says you tap Next, tap Filters and choose one.
  • Camera effects are the live effects you see while recording. For reels, Instagram says you tap Effects in the tool menu on the left, then scroll through the effects or search for more.

If the filter strip is missing, you're in filter territory. If the live face or background effect won't load, it's an effects problem. The fixes below cover both, but it saves time to know which you're chasing.

Updating Instagram when filters stop working

Instagram's troubleshooting article starts with a reminder. Always make sure you're running the latest version of the Instagram app, and the latest version of your phone or tablet's operating system, before you try anything else. Older app versions can lose features, and Instagram's own article says some older versions stop being supported.

  1. Open your phone's app store and search for Instagram.
  2. If an Update button shows, tap it.
  3. Check your phone's settings for a pending software update.
  4. Reopen Instagram and try your filter again.

Restarting your phone to bring Instagram filters back

This is the unglamorous one, and Instagram puts it first. Its help says to always try restarting your phone or tablet first if you're having trouble. A restart clears out whatever the camera or the app got tangled in. Switch the device off fully, wait a moment, then switch it on and open Instagram again.

Checking your connection if an Instagram filter won't load

Many camera effects load as you use them, so a weak connection can leave you staring at a blank effect. Instagram says to try the app on both Wi-Fi and your mobile data connection, to see whether a weak Wi-Fi or mobile data signal is the cause. If the filter works on one and not the other, you've found your answer, and the fix is a better signal rather than anything inside Instagram.

Reinstalling Instagram when filters still won't work

If a restart and a connection check don't help, Instagram's next suggestion is to delete the app and install it again. Its steps are:

On iPhone and iPad

  1. From the Home screen, tap and hold the Instagram app icon.
  2. Tap Remove App. Instagram says your photos and profile info will be saved.
  3. Go to the App Store, reinstall Instagram and log in with your username and password.

On Android

  1. Go to your phone or tablet's Settings and tap Apps.
  2. Tap Instagram, then tap Uninstall.
  3. Go to the Google Play Store, reinstall Instagram and log in.

Before you do this, make sure you remember your login details. If you don't, sort that out first. I'd also save any draft you're worried about to your camera roll, which is my own habit rather than something Instagram's article says.

Instagram filters that aren't there for everyone yet

Here's a line from Instagram's own help that explains many of these cases. It says you might be experiencing an issue if a feature isn't available to everyone yet. Instagram rolls features out gradually, so a filter or effect your friend can see may simply not have reached your account.

Instagram also mentions that problems can come from settings you or someone else set up. If you share a device or an account with a team member, it's worth asking whether anything was changed.

Searching for a specific Instagram effect that has gone missing

When you record a reel, Instagram says you can search for more effects with the Search option in the effects menu, as well as scrolling through popular ones. If a particular effect has vanished, search for it by name. It may have been removed or changed by whoever made it, and Instagram's help pages don't promise otherwise.

For a post, remember the order matters. The Filters option appears after you tap Next, and Instagram says you can tap a filter a second time to change its strength with a slider. If you only tap Next once and move on, you'll never see it.

Reporting an Instagram filter problem to Instagram

If nothing above helps, Instagram says it could be a bug or a broken feature, and it wants to hear about it. Its steps are:

  1. Tap your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
  2. Tap Menu in the top right.
  3. Below More info and support, tap Help.
  4. Tap Report a Problem and follow the on-screen instructions.

Instagram also lets you shake your phone to see the reporting menu, then tap Report a problem. Include which phone you're using, what you were doing, and a screenshot if you can. Instagram says that detail helps it address the problem.

If the real worry is that your post looks flat without the filter, try changing it before you share instead. My guide to editing an Instagram post with multiple pictures shows what you can still adjust afterwards, and writing Instagram captions that boost engagement helps a good photo do its job with or without a filter.
