WhatsApp Group Full? The Member Limit and What to Do

A WhatsApp group can have up to 1,024 members, so a group is full once it reaches that number. If you can't join or add anyone, an admin can remove members to free up space. WhatsApp also lists other reasons, such as admin approval being switched on or an invite link that has been reset.

You tap a group invite link, or try to add one more person, and WhatsApp won't let you. It's a common moment for anyone who runs a customer group, a school parents' chat or a local community, and it's easy to assume the group is full when something else is going on.

WhatsApp's help centre doesn't have a page called group full. What it does have is a clear statement of the limit and a short list of reasons a person can't join. I've pulled those together here and kept to what WhatsApp says.

The WhatsApp group full limit explained

WhatsApp says a group can have up to 1,024 members. The same number appears in its guide to creating and inviting people into a group. So if a group has reached that size, there's no room for anyone else until somebody leaves or is removed.

Nothing I've read in WhatsApp's help suggests the number changes by country or phone. If a group is far smaller than the limit and you still can't get in, the cause is probably one of the others below.

Why you can't join a WhatsApp group that isn't full

WhatsApp's help page for people who are unable to join a group lists these reasons.

  • The group size limit has been reached.
  • The admin has turned on Approve new members, so you have to request to join and wait for an admin to say yes.
  • The group invite link was reset, so the link you have is no longer valid.
  • There's an internal server error.

The second one is easy to mistake for a full group. When approval is switched on, you'll see a message saying an admin must approve your request, and you can cancel the request at any time. If it's the third, WhatsApp says you can ask a group admin to add you manually.

Freeing up space in a WhatsApp group that is full

If you're an admin, you can make room by removing members who've gone quiet. WhatsApp's steps on a computer are below, and the phone app follows the same idea.

  1. Open the WhatsApp group chat and click the group subject.
  2. Open Group info.
  3. Hover over the member you want to remove and click the menu arrow beside their name.
  4. Click Remove, then confirm by clicking Remove again.

Before you start removing people, think about how it'll feel for them. A short message first is kinder than silently dropping someone, and it helps keep goodwill if the group is part of your business. Many admins set up a second group for overflow rather than trimming an active one.

Splitting a full WhatsApp group into more than one group

If a community has outgrown one group, creating another is the simple answer. WhatsApp says you can create a group with up to 1,024 members. Open a new chat, choose New group, pick contacts, give it a name and an icon, then set Group permissions before you invite people.

Think about the permissions at that stage, because they're easier to set up than to change later. WhatsApp says that in a group started with fewer than 33 members, everyone can add others and edit group information. In a group with more than 256 members, the Edit group settings option defaults to Only admins. For a big group I'd keep it that way. If you'd like to know more about adding people once the new group exists, I've covered adding someone to a WhatsApp group step by step.

The invite link is the most common way people reach a group, so it's worth knowing about three states WhatsApp describes.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • Reset: an admin can deactivate the current invite link and create a new one. Once it's reset, the old link can't be restored, and anyone who tries it sees that the link was reset.
  • Unavailable: WhatsApp occasionally limits groups from using Invite to Group via Link to address unwanted contact, abuse of the groups feature, spam or other Terms of Service violations. WhatsApp says the feature normally becomes available again after 7 days.
  • Shared widely: WhatsApp warns that anyone with a group link can join and forward the link to other people, so share it only with people you trust.

If your group fills up quickly after you post a link in public, that's the likeliest reason. Turning on Approve new members gives you control, because new people must be approved by an admin before they're added.

Too many people added too fast

There's one more limit that has nothing to do with the group size. WhatsApp says that if you've added too many members to groups, you might see an error message, and you might need to wait 24 hours before you can add more members or create additional groups. If you're building a few groups in one afternoon, spread the work out.

Using a WhatsApp group full of clients responsibly

A group at the limit is a lot of people to look after. If you use WhatsApp for your business, think about whether a broadcast-style setup, a second group or a different channel suits the audience better. My WhatsApp help guide lists the other topics I've written up, including privacy and group basics.

WhatsApp also notes that you can't hide members' phone numbers in a group, and a new member's profile name may be visible to others. That matters more as a group grows, so say so in the description.

A short checklist if your WhatsApp group is full

  • Check how many members the group has against the 1,024 limit.
  • If it's under the limit, check whether Approve new members is switched on.
  • Ask an admin whether the invite link was reset, and request a fresh one.
  • As an admin, remove inactive members or start a second group.
  • If you've been adding lots of people, wait 24 hours before adding more.
