Facebook App Update: How to Get the Latest Version

To do a Facebook app update, open your phone's app store, search for Facebook and tap Update if a newer version is listed. Facebook's help pages say the latest version helps fix problems when something isn't working. If no update appears, your phone's software may no longer be supported.

Whenever someone tells me Facebook is behaving oddly on their phone, the first question I ask is whether the app is up to date. It's dull advice, but it's exactly where Facebook's own help pages start, and it saves a lot of fiddling.

This guide covers the update itself, how to see whether one is waiting, and what to do when it won't install. I'll stick to what the Facebook Help Centre says, and I'll tell you where its pages go quiet rather than guess.

Why a Facebook app update is the first fix to try

Facebook's help page for downloading or updating the app opens with a clear line: it's important to use the latest version of the app to help fix problems when something isn't working. That's the reason I'd always update before trying anything more drastic, such as reinstalling or contacting support.

There's a second reason if you run a business Page or a group from your phone. New features reach the latest app first, so an old version can leave you wondering why a colleague sees a button you don't. If you've ever been confused about where a feature went, such as where saved reels live on Facebook, the app version is worth ruling out.

Facebook app update steps on Android

Facebook's Android help page gives these steps:

  1. Go to the Play Store, or download the newest version directly from Facebook.
  2. Look for the Facebook app. If there's a newer version you don't have yet, it'll be listed there for you to download.
  3. Tap to download it, and wait for it to finish before you open the app again.

If you're having trouble downloading, the same page says to check your internet connection and, for best results, connect to Wi-Fi before downloading.

Facebook app update steps on iPhone and iPad

For Apple devices, Facebook's general help article sends you to the App Store in the same way. Search for the Facebook app, tap it and follow the on-screen instructions. Another short Facebook article says you can find the latest versions of its apps by visiting your phone's app store, where you can see what's new in the app and install the latest version.

That second point is handy. The store listing usually tells you what changed, which helps if you want to know whether an update is worth waiting for on a slow connection.

How to tell if the Facebook app update is waiting for you

Facebook's pages don't describe a version number screen inside the app, so I won't invent one. The reliable check, according to its help, is your app store. If a newer version exists, the store lists it for you to download. If the store only shows Open, you've already got the latest one available to your phone.

Menus and button names change between phone makers and store versions, so don't worry if yours says something slightly different from mine.

When the Facebook app update won't install on Android

Facebook has a separate troubleshooting article for installing the latest Android version. Its suggestions, in order:

  • Check how much space is free. Open your Android's settings, then your storage settings.
  • If you have less than 100MB available, uninstall apps you don't need to clear up space, then retry. You may also be able to move the Facebook app to your SD card.
  • Cancel the download and restart it.
  • Log out of Facebook, then retry the download.
  • Look at Google's tips for troubleshooting download problems.
  • As a last resort, uninstall the Facebook app, restart your phone and install it again from the Google Play Store.

When the Facebook app update won't install on iPhone or iPad

The Apple version of that article is almost identical. Tap Settings, then General, then iPhone or iPad Storage, and look at your free space. Facebook says that if you've got less than 100 MB, clear some apps and try again. Then work through a stronger connection, cancelling and restarting the download, logging out and back in, and Apple's own download tips.

If you're still stuck after all that, the help page has a link to tell Facebook what's going on. A short note about where the update stopped is more useful than a general complaint.

Facebook app update missing because your phone is too old

This is the cause people overlook. Facebook has a help article on supported operating systems. It says the Facebook app for Android, iPhone and iPad supports Android 8.0 or greater, and iOS 15.1 or greater on iPhone and iPad.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

It also explains what happens when a phone falls behind. You can keep using the app, but you won't get any further updates or new features. Over time you may notice slow performance or other issues, and you won't be able to update the app to fix them. Facebook recommends a device with supported software. Before you give up on the app, check for system updates in your phone's settings, because a newer system version might bring you back into the supported range.

Keeping your Facebook app update routine simple

I'd suggest a small habit rather than a big plan. When something misbehaves in Facebook, open your app store before anything else. If a Facebook update is waiting, install it on Wi-Fi and reopen the app. If you notice posts or tools missing for your Page, that's usually the moment to check the version.

It's also a good time to think about what the app can see on your phone. After an update, Facebook can ask for permissions again, and you choose what to allow. If the location prompt is the one that makes you pause, my explainer on whether Facebook tracks your location will help you decide.

Using Facebook on a computer while the Facebook app update sorts itself out

Facebook's help page reminds you that if you can't use the app, you can use Facebook on a computer at facebook.com, and you can chat with others by visiting facebook.com/messages. If you run client work through Facebook, that keeps you working while you wait for a download to finish.

Reporting a Facebook app update that still misbehaves

If the app still misbehaves after you've updated, Facebook says it could be a bug, and you can report it. On an iPhone or Android phone, shake your phone and follow the on-screen instructions. On a computer, use Help and support, then Report a problem. Say which version you updated to and what you were doing when it went wrong.
