How to Add an Instagram Account to Meta Business Suite

To add an Instagram account to Meta Business Suite, the account must be a business or creator account. On the mobile app, tap More, then Settings, tap Connect next to Instagram, tap Connect account and log in to the Instagram account. On a computer, use Settings, then Pages, select the account and click Connect assets.

Meta Business Suite is the place where small businesses and creators manage Facebook and Instagram together: posts, messages and insights in one tool. Connecting your Instagram account is the first job. It's also the step where people get stuck, usually because the account is still a personal one or because they're not sure whether to link a Facebook Page.

I've followed Meta's own business help pages for the steps below. Meta updates these screens often, so if a button name differs slightly, go by the sense of the step.

What your Instagram account needs before it goes into Meta Business Suite

Meta's help pages are clear on this. To manage your Instagram account in Meta Business Suite, you must have an Instagram business or creator account. A personal Instagram account can't be connected to a business asset. If yours is still personal, switch it first.

  1. Open Instagram on your device and go to Settings.
  2. Tap Account type and tools.
  3. Tap Switch to professional account and choose Business or Creator.

The desktop help page also says you need full control of the business portfolio that manages the business asset you're connecting to. If a colleague set up the portfolio, ask them to give you that level of access first.

Adding an Instagram account to Meta Business Suite on your phone

Meta's mobile help page lists these steps for the Meta Business Suite app:

  1. Open the Meta Business Suite mobile app.
  2. Tap More from the menu bar at the bottom.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Next to Instagram, tap Connect.
  5. Tap Connect account.
  6. Choose whether to allow access to Instagram messages in Inbox, and whether to get Instagram push notifications only on Meta Business Suite. Both are on by default, and you can tap the toggles to change them.
  7. Tap Confirm.
  8. Log in to the Instagram account you want to connect. If you don't see it, tap Log in with another Instagram account.
  9. Review the information about adding an Instagram account to your business portfolio, then tap Continue.
  10. Tap OK on the confirmation screen.

To check it worked, repeat the first two steps. If it's connected, you'll see Connected next to Instagram. Meta also notes you need a further step to allow access to Instagram messages in Inbox.

Adding an Instagram account to Meta Business Suite on a computer

The desktop route runs through your business portfolio. Meta's help page says:

  1. Go to business.facebook.com in your browser. If you don't have a business portfolio, you'll be prompted to create one.
  2. Click Settings in the menu on the left.
  3. Under Accounts, click Pages.
  4. Select the Instagram account you want to connect, then click Connect assets.
  5. Follow the prompts to connect a business asset to your professional Instagram account.

Once it's done, your professional Instagram account appears under your business assets in Meta Business Suite. Meta adds that business support options such as live chat and email should become available for the account.

Using Meta Business Suite with Instagram but no Facebook Page

You can use Business Suite without a Facebook Page. Meta says that to manage an Instagram account that isn't connected to a Page, you go to Meta Business Suite and log in with your Instagram credentials. If you're asked to link a Facebook Page and you're having trouble, Meta suggests two things: sign out of your Facebook user profile and then log in with your Instagram username and password, or open Meta Business Suite in a private or Incognito browser and log in the same way.

Connecting to a Facebook Page or just a business portfolio

Meta's help page describes two options if you have a Facebook Page as well:

  • Connect the Instagram account to the Page. Meta says the two are then automatically under the same business portfolio and appear as one profile in Meta Business Suite.
  • Connect the Instagram account to the same business portfolio but not the Page. They appear as two separate profiles in the same portfolio.

Meta also stresses that adding an Instagram account to a business portfolio doesn't automatically connect it to a Facebook Page. The mobile page adds that you can only connect an Instagram account to one business portfolio, though you can give a partner access to your portfolio, or add your account to their portfolio, so they can work with your business assets.

Why you might want your Instagram account in Meta Business Suite

Meta says you can save time managing your Instagram account here, with your content managed in one place. For a small business, that mostly means one inbox and one place to plan posts. If you want to understand your numbers once they're flowing, my guide to reading your Instagram dashboard numbers will help, and choosing a free Instagram post scheduler covers the planning side.

If you can't add your Instagram account to Meta Business Suite

  • Check that it's a business or creator account, not a personal one.
  • Check you have full control of the business portfolio, if you're using the desktop route.
  • If you're asked to link a Page and want to avoid it, try the sign-out or private browser suggestions above.
  • Make sure you're logging in to the right Instagram username and password.
  • Meta has a separate help page to troubleshoot connecting an Instagram account to your business portfolio, so search the Meta Business Help Centre for it if you still see an error.

If the account was once connected and you now want to disconnect it, Meta has a separate help page for removing an Instagram account from your business portfolio. I'd read it before you click anything, so you don't cut off access your team still needs.
