How to See Your Spotify Listening History (Phone and Desktop)

To see your Spotify listening history, open Recents: on mobile tap Home, then your avatar, then Recents. On desktop, click the Play Queue icon at the bottom of the window, then Recents, which shows your last 50 songs. For a full record, use Spotify's Download your data tool.

Whether you're trying to find that song you heard in a cafe, rebuild a playlist for a client event or check what your own channel has been playing, Spotify keeps a trail of what you've listened to. The catch is that it isn't all in one place, and the short list in the app is only part of the story.

I've gone through Spotify's help pages on recent activity, listening stats and its data download to explain what each view shows. Because Spotify updates its apps often, a menu may be named slightly differently on your device.

Finding your Spotify listening history in Recents on your phone

Spotify says Recents shows the music, podcasts and audiobooks you've listened to or saved. On a phone or tablet:

  1. Tap the Home icon.
  2. Tap your avatar at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Recents.

Spotify adds a tip: use the filters at the top, such as Music, to search within a particular list. That's handy when you only remember it was a song, not a podcast.

Finding your Spotify listening history on the desktop app

The desktop route is different, and it's easy to miss. Spotify says that to see the last 50 songs you listened to:

  1. Click the Play Queue icon at the bottom of the window.
  2. Click Recents.

So the in-app list on desktop is capped at the most recent 50 songs. If you're hunting for something you played a long while back, you'll need one of the options below.

Seeing your most played artists and songs with Listening stats

Recents is a list in time order. Listening stats is a summary. Spotify says it shows the artists and songs you've played most often, how your listening compares with the average listener in your country, and other insights that are added over time.

In Spotify's help, the steps are for mobile: swipe left or tap your profile picture, then tap Listening stats, and tap any section to learn more. Spotify notes that this feature uses AI-powered features and links to its privacy policy for how data is managed and shared.

If you're after the yearly round-up rather than a running view, my guide to seeing your Spotify Wrapped covers where that lives.

Getting your full Spotify listening history with a data download

When the app's lists aren't enough, Spotify's Download your data tool is the official route. Spotify's page explains that you can ask for three packages, either separately or all at once:

  • Account data: includes your playlists, a streaming history for the past year, Your Library, search queries and more.
  • Extended streaming history: covers listening during the lifetime of your account.
  • Technical log information: technical data such as commands and error messages.

The files come in JSON format, which is a data format rather than a neat list. Spotify says to read the Read Me First file included in your download, which explains the fields. For extended streaming history, it lists details like timestamps, the platform, how long you played something, and track or podcast details.

To start a request, Spotify says to go to the Account Privacy section of your account page and use the Download your data tool. Its page gives a ZIP file with a copy of your personal data. Spotify doesn't give a timeframe in the pages I read, so I won't promise one.

A word of care: that file holds personal information, so store it somewhere safe and don't share it.

Choosing which Spotify listening activity other people can see

Your history and what other people see are separate things. Spotify's help explains a few settings:

  • Listening activity shows friends what you're playing. Spotify says it's turned off by default.
  • If Private session is on, your listening activity is automatically disabled for 6 hours.
  • Recently played artists: Spotify says that by default anyone who taps your profile can see the artists you've listened to recently. On mobile you can switch this off in Settings and privacy, under Privacy and social.

If you run a business or creator profile and want your public page to look tidy, check these before you share your profile link. My guide to making a Spotify playlist public is also worth a look, since public playlists are visible to others.

Turning your Spotify history into a playlist

Once you've found what you were looking for, don't let it slip away again. Add the songs to a playlist so you can find them next time. My step-by-step on making a playlist on Spotify covers phone, desktop and shared playlists.

If you can't find a song in your Spotify listening history

  • Try the Music filter in Recents on mobile.
  • Remember the desktop list shows only the last 50 songs.
  • Check you're logged in to the same account you used before.
  • Songs played in a private session may not show up as you'd expect, so check whether Private session was on.
  • Use the data download for older listening.

I want to be careful on the private session point: Spotify's pages I read say private session disables listening activity for 6 hours, but they don't spell out what it does to Recents. Check Spotify's private listening page if it matters to you.

Spotify listening history for creators and small businesses

If you play music in a shop or use Spotify for client work, your history is a handy research tool. You can spot which tracks you keep returning to, build a playlist around them and keep your setlist consistent. If you're a podcaster, Recents is also where you'd find an episode you started but didn't finish.
