Amazon KDP in Canada: Will You Get Paid in CAD? (2026)

Yes, Canadian authors can use Amazon KDP, and KDP's payment options page says Canadian bank accounts receive direct deposit in Canadian dollars from every Amazon store. The IRS treaty table lists Canada at zero for copyright royalties. The catch is that print sales on Amazon.ca are still listed under 30% US withholding until your tax form is right.

Amazon KDP Canada is one of the simpler setups on the list, because KDP pays Canadian bank accounts in Canadian dollars with no cheques or wires in the way. The part to watch is tax, where one line on KDP's withholding page matters a lot if you sell paperbacks to Canadian readers. I've read KDP's help pages and the IRS treaty table. I'm not a tax adviser, so ask an accountant about your own return.

Canadian dollars from every Amazon store

According to KDP's payment options page, the Canada bank location shows direct deposit in CAD for every Amazon store on the list, from Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk to Amazon.com.au and Amazon.ca. Check and wire transfer both show as not applicable. In other words, you don't have to think about which store sold the book, because the money arrives in the same currency.

KDP says that where direct deposit is available in the sale currency, you're paid in that currency with no conversion. For sales in other currencies, Amazon converts at an exchange rate it determines, and KDP says that rate includes all conversion fees. So a sale in one currency and a deposit in another will carry a built-in cost that you won't see as a separate line.

Amazon.ca print sales and the 30% US withholding line

This is the Canada-specific catch. KDP's tax withholding page says royalty payments for print book sales on Amazon.ca are subject to 30% US tax withholding for non-US persons. The same sentence covers eBook sales on Amazon.com and print sales on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.jp and Amazon.com.au, and it includes payments from the KDP Select Global Fund.

Many people assume that selling to Canadians in a Canadian store means a purely Canadian tax story. KDP's page doesn't say that. It says the US withholding applies to those print sales until you've provided valid tax information. So the form you complete in your KDP account isn't paperwork for its own sake. It decides how much is held back.

The IRS table gives Canada a zero rate

The good news is in the IRS treaty table. It lists Canada at 0 in the Copyrights column under Royalties, citing Article 12. KDP says you may qualify for a reduced rate when your country has a tax treaty with the United States, and the rate your payments will use is shown in your tax profile after you review your W-8 form.

To claim it, KDP says you have to provide a tax identification number. If you have a US one, you must use it. If you don't, you may enter the income tax number issued by your country's tax authority. Which Canadian number counts is a question for your accountant, so I won't guess.

KDP also warns that your W-8 expires on the last day of the third calendar year after you sign it, and a reduced rate falls back to 30% if the form lapses. Diary the date.

The minimum payment rules you probably won't meet

KDP's thresholds page lists a wire minimum of 100 CAD for Amazon.ca, and says check payments aren't available for that store. Direct deposit has no minimum payment threshold at all. Since Canadian banks are paid by direct deposit, the practical result is that every royalty that clears your bank is paid out, however small.

One detail is easy to miss: KDP says the minimum payment threshold applies to the US dollar amount owed to you. That matters only if you ever use wire or check, which Canadian accounts usually won't.

When the cash lands in a Canadian account

KDP's schedule is the same for everyone. Royalties are paid every month, approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which the sale was reported, as long as any threshold is met. So a sale in January is paid at the end of March. KDP's help pages don't give Canada a separate bank delay, so check with your bank if a payment shows as paid but hasn't appeared.

No PayPal, so choose the bank carefully

KDP says Amazon Payments and PayPal aren't available options. That makes the bank account you add under the Getting Paid section important. If you want your author income kept apart from daily spending, ask your bank about a dedicated account. The comparison with other countries is interesting, and my guides on KDP payments for UK authors and how it works for authors in India show how much the payment route changes depending on where your bank is.

Scams using the KDP name

Treat any message asking for a fee to "activate" royalties as a scam. Log in only through the official KDP site, check your Payments Report there and don't share bank details by email or chat.

So, does KDP work from Canada?

Yes, and it's one of the smoothest setups. You're paid in Canadian dollars by direct deposit, with no minimum payment and no conversion on matching currency. Put your effort into the tax questionnaire, because Amazon.ca print sales sit on the US withholding list until your treaty information is in order.
