Is Scribd Legit? Documents, Everand and Cancelling Safely (2026)

Yes, Scribd is a legit company: it's been running since 2007 from San Francisco and hosts a document library of over 240 million files, alongside its Everand ebook service and SlideShare. The catches are that anyone can upload documents, so copyright and quality vary, and it's been accused of charging former subscribers after they cancelled.

Scribd often turns up when you search for a manual, a report or a set of notes, usually with a prompt to sign up before you can download. That makes plenty of people wary. Here's who runs it, how its different services fit together and what to watch before you hand over card details.

Who runs Scribd

According to Wikipedia, Scribd was founded in 2007 by Trip Adler, Jared Friedman and Tikhon Bernstam, and it's headquartered in San Francisco. It's a long-established tech company rather than a fly-by-night download site.

In 2020 it bought SlideShare, the presentation-sharing site, from LinkedIn, and it now runs several products side by side. Knowing which one you're on helps make sense of the sign-up screens.

Scribd, Everand and SlideShare explained

In 2023, Wikipedia says, Scribd split from one product into three:

ServiceWhat it does, per Wikipedia
ScribdA document library with over 240 million documents
EverandA subscription service for ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, podcasts and sheet music
SlideShareA site hosting about 25 million presentations

So if you came for a novel or an audiobook, you may be sent to Everand, while a report or study guide sits on Scribd itself. The split confuses people, and it's worth checking which service a subscription covers before you pay.

Where Scribd's documents come from

Much of the Scribd library is uploaded by users. That's why you'll find everything from official manuals to someone's class notes. It also means quality varies, and some uploads have been copyrighted work shared without permission.

Copyright has followed Scribd from the start. Wikipedia says it received 25 DMCA takedown notices in its first year, and in 2009 J.K. Rowling's lawyer described unauthorised Harry Potter downloads on the site as unlawful. A class action brought by author Elaine Scott in 2009 was dropped in 2010. If you're a student, my guides on what counts as plagiarism and plagiarism checkers are worth reading before you reuse anything you find there.

Scribd subscriptions and cancelling

Scribd's reading services work on a subscription. Wikipedia says that since 2018 it has offered constantly rotating catalogues of ebooks and audiobooks for a monthly fee, so a title you liked may not stay available forever.

The bigger issue is cancelling. Wikipedia notes that Scribd has been accused of charging former subscribers after they cancelled. If you sign up for a trial, I'd do three things straight away:

  1. Note the date the trial ends and set a reminder a few days before.
  2. Cancel through your account settings and save the confirmation email or a screenshot.
  3. Check your bank or card statement the following month and dispute any charge after cancelling.

Is it safe to download from Scribd?

Downloading through Scribd's own site or app is the safer route. The risk comes from third-party sites promising free Scribd downloads, which often push adverts, fake download buttons or files you didn't ask for. Avoid them, and never enter your Scribd login on a site that isn't Scribd.

  • Use the official Scribd or Everand website or app.
  • Be wary of sites offering free Scribd downloaders or premium accounts.
  • Don't reuse your Scribd password elsewhere.
  • Treat documents from unknown uploaders as unverified until you check the source.

Checking a Scribd document before you rely on it

Because so much of the library comes from users, a document's title and cover page don't prove much. Before you quote a report, follow a manual or use someone's notes, look for the original source: the company, author or organisation that first published it. If you can find the same document on the publisher's own website, use that version instead, since it's more likely to be current and complete.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Check the date too. Older uploads can sit on the site for years after the original has been updated or withdrawn, which matters a lot for anything legal, medical or technical.

Uploading your own work to Scribd

If you're a creator or small business, you might use Scribd or SlideShare to share guides and presentations. Only upload material you own or have permission to share, think about whether you want it downloadable, and keep the original files yourself. If you find your own work uploaded by someone else, the copyright history above shows Scribd responds to takedown notices, so use its official reporting route.

Who Scribd suits

Scribd's library is handy for finding manuals, reports and notes that are hard to track down elsewhere, and Everand suits people who read or listen a lot. It's less suited to anyone who needs to rely on a document being accurate or licensed, because user uploads aren't checked the way a publisher would check a book.

My verdict on Scribd

All told, Scribd is a real, long-running company with a big library and well-known products, so it's legit. Just treat uploads with care, check which service you're subscribing to and keep proof when you cancel. That covers the main ways people get caught out.
