Is Boxed Legit? Bankruptcy, New Owner and the Relaunch (2026)

Yes, Boxed is a real retailer. It started in New York City in 2013, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2023, and was bought by MSG Distributors before relaunching its website and app in 2024. The catch is that today's Boxed isn't run by the founders, so old reviews and old policies may not describe the current service.

If you remember Boxed as the bulk-buy app people compared to Costco, you may have been surprised when it vanished and then came back. That history is exactly why so many people search whether it's legit, so I've pulled together the public record to explain what happened and what to check before you order.

Who started Boxed and where it came from

According to Wikipedia, Boxed was founded in 2013 by Chieh Huang, Christopher Cheung, William Fong and Jared Yaman, and it was based in New York City. It sold wholesale products in bulk sizes, delivered to customers through its app or website, with no membership required. People often compared it to Costco, which is why it appealed to anyone without a car or a warehouse club card.

So the brand isn't a copycat or a pop-up site. It had named founders, outside investors and a long public history before anything went wrong.

How Boxed raised money and went public

Wikipedia says Boxed raised 132 million dollars in 2016 from investors including GGV Capital and DST Global, and another 111 million dollars in 2018 from Aeon Group. In 2021 it went public by merging with a special-purpose acquisition company called Seven Oaks Acquisition Corp., and the merger closed on December 8, 2021, putting it on the New York Stock Exchange.

Having that kind of paper trail is one sign a company is real. But it's also a reminder that a big funding history doesn't protect a business, and what followed shows why.

What happened when Boxed filed for Chapter 11

Wikipedia records that on April 2, 2023, Boxed filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Chapter 11 is a US court process that lets a company restructure or sell its assets while it deals with its debts. The sources I read don't explain the reasons in detail, so I won't guess at them.

What matters to you as a shopper is the sequel. Wikipedia says MSG Distributors acquired Boxed on August 18, 2023, with plans to relaunch the brand, and that in 2024 Boxed relaunched its website and mobile app. In other words, the Boxed you can order from today is the same brand under different ownership.

What Boxed says about delivery and membership now

Boxed's own site says there's free delivery on every order, with a 29 US dollar minimum to order. It also says you can get same-day delivery where available if you order by 1 PM local time, and that no membership is required. Treat those as the site's own claims, because delivery options depend on where you live and what's in your basket.

Wikipedia notes that the earlier version of the company shipped from fulfilment centres in New Jersey, Nevada and Texas to deliver within two days. I wouldn't assume that network is identical now, since the business changed hands. Check the delivery estimate at checkout for your own address.

Returns, refunds and old gift cards

I couldn't confirm Boxed's current return policy from the pages available to me, so I won't summarise one for you. Find the returns and refund page on the site itself before you buy, and screenshot it at checkout if you order something expensive.

Old orders and credits are a separate question. A relaunch under a new owner doesn't automatically mean old balances, gift cards or loyalty credits carried over. If you held a balance from before the bankruptcy, ask Boxed's support through the site and keep your replies in writing. If you paid by card for something that never arrived, your card issuer's dispute process is the usual route.

The catch with buying from a relaunched brand

Being legit doesn't mean nothing has changed. Reviews written before 2023 describe a different company, so they're a poor guide to what you'll get now. Prices, stock, suppliers and customer service may all differ from the version people loved.

  • Look for recent feedback from after the relaunch, not old posts.
  • Compare the unit price against your local store, because bulk sizes only save money if you use them.
  • Check expiry dates when your groceries arrive.
  • Start with a small first order before committing to a big basket.
  • Keep your order confirmation emails in case you need to dispute a charge.

Reviews are only useful if they're real. My guide on how to spot a fake product review shows what to look for, and I've also listed review sites for shoppers that can help you cross-check.

Fake Boxed sites and copycat offers

A brand with a famous name and a gap in its history is a gift to scammers. Anyone can register a lookalike address, copy the logo and advertise huge discounts on social media. Because Boxed went offline for a while, an old favourite address or a page you bookmarked could now lead somewhere else.

  • Type the address yourself or use the official app store listing, rather than clicking an advert.
  • Be wary of deals that look far below normal bulk prices, especially if the site asks for a bank transfer or gift cards.
  • Check that the checkout page uses a recognised card or wallet payment option.
  • Don't enter card details after a text or email telling you an old Boxed order is on hold.
  • If you're unsure, go to the main site directly and look for the order in your account.

My verdict on Boxed

This is a real brand with a documented history, a bankruptcy on the record and a new owner. That isn't a scam, but it does mean you should treat it like a new retailer using an old name. Read the current delivery and returns pages, start small and pay inside the official checkout.
