Driver Easy is a real driver update tool made by Easeware, and its own pages say it uses drivers from hardware makers and can create a Windows restore point first. The catches are that it no longer has a free version, subscriptions can renew automatically, and any driver change carries some risk, so back up first.
Driver update tools have a bad reputation, partly because plenty of dodgy ones exist and partly because messing with drivers can break a working PC. So it's fair to ask whether Driver Easy is safe before you run it. I've read its own site, FAQ, refund policy and privacy policy, so here's what it says and what I'd do before clicking install.
Who makes Driver Easy
Driver Easy's homepage says it's a brand of Easeware. Its about page says Easeware Technology Limited was founded in 2010, that Driver Easy has been developed since 2009, and names Kevin Zheng as founder. The same page says the operation centre moved to Shenzhen in 2015 so the team could test drivers on real machines.
The privacy policy doesn't give a legal address, so you won't find a full company registration on the site. The about page also mentions being named a Microsoft Partner in 2013, a Gold Microsoft Partner in 2017 and certified by AppEsteem in 2019. Those are the company's own statements, and I haven't seen them confirmed elsewhere, so treat them as claims rather than proof.
What Driver Easy does with your drivers
Driver Easy scans your PC for missing, outdated and mismatched drivers. According to its homepage, the Pro version automatically downloads and installs the drivers you need. Its FAQ says the drivers come straight from the hardware manufacturer, are tested on hundreds of computers, and that most are Microsoft-certified where the manufacturer submitted them to Microsoft's testing.
That's a reasonable description of how these tools work. The weak point is that a driver is low-level software, so a bad update can cause crashes or stop a device working. Many drivers don't need replacing at all if your PC runs fine.
Driver Easy's restore point and backup
The FAQ says the trial and paid Pro version can automatically create a Windows restore point and can back up and restore drivers before updating them. That's the feature that matters most for safety, because it gives you a way back if something breaks.
- Make sure the restore point option is on before you update anything.
- Update one device at a time, starting with the one that's causing a problem.
- Keep your important files backed up elsewhere, because a restore point isn't a full backup.
- For graphics, network and chipset drivers, the maker of your PC or hardware often has its own official download page too.
Is there a free Driver Easy?
This catches people out. The FAQ says that since 2024 Driver Easy no longer offers a free version. There is a 7-day free trial of Pro, and a paid subscription is required after the trial. Older articles and download pages that still talk about a free tier may be out of date.
Driver Easy renewals, refunds and your money
The FAQ says auto-renewal is on by default for home and business orders placed after a cut-off in 2019. When it's on, the payment processor 2Checkout emails you 30, 7 and 1 day before expiry and charges you one day before the license expires. A Home or Business license is valid for one year.
Driver Easy's refund policy gives a 30-day money-back guarantee for Home and Business plans. The Computer Repair Shop License isn't refundable, and requests after 30 days generally receive no refund, though extensions may be granted at Driver Easy's discretion. Put a reminder in your calendar before the first renewal date if you don't want a second year.

What data Driver Easy collects
The privacy policy says license activation collects the MAC address and manufacturer of your network card. It says product-use data such as hardware details and crash information doesn't include personal data, and that you can opt out in the app settings. Payments are handled by 2Checkout, so the company says it doesn't receive your full card details.

Any tool that scans your PC sees a lot about it, so take the opt-out seriously if privacy matters to you. For the wider habit of keeping accounts tight, my 1Password review covers a tool that helps, and my guide on how to stop hackers getting into a business website has more security basics.
Fake Driver Easy downloads and support
Driver tools are popular bait for malware. Be careful with these:
- Download only from the official Driver Easy website, never from a random mirror or a pop-up.
- Be suspicious of 'your drivers are out of date' warnings in a browser, which are often adverts rather than scans.
- Never let a stranger who phones you take remote control of your PC, even if they say they're from Driver Easy or Microsoft.
- Use the contact page on the official site for support and refunds, not numbers from adverts.
My verdict on Driver Easy
Driver Easy is a real product from a named company, with a restore point option, a clear refund window and a stated source for its drivers. That's more than shady alternatives offer. But it's a paid subscription that can auto-renew, driver updates always carry some risk, and the company hasn't published a legal address on the pages I read. If your PC works, you may not need it. If you do use it, turn on the restore point and note the renewal date.
