How to Use Green Screen on CapCut: App, Desktop and Online

To use green screen on CapCut, put your background clip on the main track, add the green screen clip on top as an overlay, select it, open Cutout and choose Chroma Key, then pick the green with the colour picker and raise Intensity. Menus vary by app version, so look for Remove BG if Cutout's missing.

Standing in front of a green sheet and appearing on a news set, a beach or your own branded backdrop is one of the oldest video tricks there is, and CapCut makes it surprisingly quick. The feature you want is called Chroma Key.

I like it for small businesses because it lets you film talking-head tips in a spare room and still look polished. Below are the phone, desktop and browser routes as CapCut's own guides describe them, plus the lighting habits that decide whether it looks clean or patchy.

How CapCut green screen works in plain terms

You need two layers. The bottom layer is your new background. The top layer is the clip filmed against green. Chroma Key tells CapCut to make one colour (the green) see-through, so the background shows through wherever the green was.

That's why the order matters. If your green clip is underneath, nothing happens. It also explains why lighting matters so much: CapCut is matching one shade, so the more even that shade is across the whole screen, the less tidying you'll do afterwards.

Using green screen in the CapCut phone app

  1. Tap New Project, choose your background clip or image and tap Add.
  2. Tap Overlay, then Add overlay, pick your green screen clip and tap Add.
  3. Select the overlay on the timeline and swipe along the bottom toolbar until you see Cutout.
  4. Tap Cutout, then Chroma Key.
  5. Drag the colour picker wheel onto the green area.
  6. Raise Intensity until the green disappears, then nudge Shadow to tidy the edges.
  7. Tap the checkmark, then the export icon at the top right.

Menus vary by app version, so if Cutout isn't where you expect, swipe the toolbar with the overlay selected and look for Chroma Key or Remove background.

Using green screen in CapCut on a computer

  1. Start a New project and put your new background on the main track.
  2. Drag your green screen clip onto the track directly above it, and trim both to the same length.
  3. Select the top clip.
  4. In the panel on the right, open the Video tab and find the Chroma key option. CapCut's guides show it under Cutout in one version and under Remove BG in another.
  5. Tick Chroma key and click the colour picker (the eyedropper) on the green.
  6. Adjust Strength and Shadow until the green's gone and the edges look clean.
  7. Click Export at the top right, choose your settings and export.

Using green screen in CapCut online

In CapCut's browser editor, the setting sits in a different panel. Select the green screen clip, open Smart tools on the right, choose Remove background and switch on Chroma key. Then use the colour picker and adjust Intensity and Shadow, exactly as on the app.

Getting a clean CapCut chroma key

Most patchy results come from the filming, not the editing. CapCut's own tips are worth following:

  • Light the green screen evenly so there are no dark patches.
  • Stretch the fabric to cut down wrinkles, which create shadows of a different green.
  • Stand several feet away from the screen so green light doesn't bounce onto you.
  • If your first colour pick caught a shadow, pick again from a cleaner patch.
  • Wearing white or holding something shiny? Lower Strength a little and use Shadow to compensate.
  • Avoid green clothes. Anything green becomes see-through along with the background.

After keying, CapCut suggests playing back the moments with movement, like hair or hand waves, to check the edges don't flicker. Then match the brightness and colour warmth of you and the background so it doesn't look like a cut-out.

Green screen clips and backgrounds inside CapCut

You don't always need your own footage. CapCut says its stock library includes green screen clips and backgrounds you can search for, such as green screen effects, subscribe button green screen, office background and news studio. In the online editor you'll find them by searching Elements.

A subscribe button pop-up on a YouTube clip, or a branded office backdrop for a tips video, is an easy win for a creator channel.

When you don't have a green screen at all

Chroma Key only works if there's a solid colour to remove. If you filmed against an ordinary wall, CapCut's background removal tools are the better route, and I cover them in my CapCut background removal guide. Chroma Key tends to give sharper edges when you do have a real green backdrop, though, so it's worth setting one up for videos you'll reuse.

Once your scene is built, a soundtrack finishes it off. Here's how to add music in CapCut and which tracks you can use.

If CapCut green screen isn't working

  1. Check the green clip is on top, as an overlay or on the upper track.
  2. Make sure you've selected the green clip, not the background, before opening Cutout.
  3. Can't find Chroma Key? Menus vary by app version, so look under Cutout, Remove BG or Smart tools, and update the app.
  4. Holes in your subject? Lower Intensity or Strength and raise Shadow instead.
  5. Green fringe around your hair? Re-pick the colour closer to your head and adjust Shadow.

Frequently asked questions

Where is green screen on CapCut?

It's called Chroma Key. On the phone app, add your green clip as an overlay, select it, tap Cutout and then Chroma Key. On desktop it sits in the Video tab under Cutout or Remove BG, depending on version.

Why is my CapCut green screen not removing the background?

Usually the green clip is underneath the background, or the colour picker landed on a shadow. Put the green clip on top, re-pick a clean patch of green and raise Intensity.

How do I stop my subject disappearing with the green?

CapCut suggests raising Strength only until the green goes, lowering it slightly for white or shiny items and using Shadow to clean up. Avoid wearing green.

Does CapCut have green screen clips I can use?

Yes. CapCut says its stock library includes green screen clips and backgrounds. Search terms like green screen effects or news studio.

Can I use CapCut green screen without a green screen?

Chroma Key needs a solid colour to remove. Without one, use CapCut's background removal tools instead.
