To keep your Teams status green, select your profile picture, select your current status and choose Available, or type /available in the search box. The catch: Teams still switches you to Away when your computer locks, sleeps or goes idle, and Duration can't hold Available in place.
That little green circle next to your name in Teams says Available, and when it flips to yellow Away halfway through a working morning it can feel like you've been caught napping. If you freelance for a client inside their Teams, or you run a small team where everyone glances at those dots before messaging, it's worth knowing what makes the colour change.
I'm only covering what Microsoft's own help pages document here: how Teams decides your status, how to set it yourself and how long a status lasts. I'm not going near gadgets or tricks that fake activity. They mislead the people you work with, and if a manager wants proof of work, an honest status plus good communication beats a green dot every time.
What the green Teams status means
Microsoft describes Available as being active in Teams with nothing on your calendar. A green circle with a check mark appears next to the profile picture of anyone who's online. It's a presence signal, not a productivity score: it only tells people you're at your device with Teams open.
Teams sets some statuses for you and leaves others to you. According to Microsoft:
| Status | Who sets it |
|---|---|
| Available | You, or Teams when you're active |
| Away | Teams, automatically, or you through Appear away |
| In a meeting or In a call | Teams, during meetings and calls |
| Busy and Do not disturb | You, or Teams in some situations |
| Be right back | Only you, it's never set automatically |
| Appear offline | You |
Why your Teams status keeps turning yellow
Microsoft's help lists the moments Teams switches you from Available to Away on its own:
- You lock your computer.
- Your computer goes into idle or sleep mode.
- On a phone, the Teams app is running in the background.
Microsoft doesn't give a set number of minutes for this. Its advice is to change your device's sleep or idle settings if you want it to take longer before the screen locks, which is a reasonable fix if you're reading a long document or on a call with Teams in the background.
On a phone, the background rule explains a lot. Switch to email or your camera and Teams treats you as away, which is fair: you're not looking at it.
Setting your Teams status to Available yourself
If Teams has you wrong, you can change it. On the desktop app or Teams on the web, Microsoft's route is:
- Select your profile picture at the top right of Teams.
- Select your current status.
- Choose Available from the list.
On the Teams mobile app, tap Menu, then tap your status to see the options and pick the one you want.
There's also a keyboard route. Microsoft says you can type commands into the search box at the top of Teams, such as /available, /busy, /dnd, /brb, /away and /offline. Typing /available is the fastest way back to green after a lunch break.
How long a Teams status lasts with the Duration setting
Here's the part people don't expect. Microsoft says you can set a duration for any status except Available. So you can tell Teams to keep you on Busy or Do not disturb until a certain time, but you can't pin yourself to green for the afternoon.
To use Duration, Microsoft's steps are:
- Select your profile picture.
- Select your current status, then Duration.
- Pick the status you want.
- Under Reset status after, choose how long it should last, or choose Custom and enter a date and time.
- Select Done.
When the time runs out, Teams goes back to setting your status from your activity, your calendar and your computer's state. To end it early, pick a new status or select Reset status.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
One more rule from Microsoft: a more available status won't override a less available one, even with a duration. Its example is that Busy won't override Away. So if your laptop locks, a duration on Busy won't stop the yellow.
Keeping Teams status right on Teams for the web
If you use Teams in a browser, there's a setting worth checking. Microsoft's help says you can go to Settings, then Notifications and Activity, then Presence, and turn on Keep my current status when I'm active outside of Teams on the web.
Your browser may ask for permission to detect activity. Microsoft notes that if you choose Block at that prompt, Teams won't detect activity outside the app, so working in another tab can show you as away.
Choosing the right Teams status for the job
Rather than chasing green, I'd pick the status that tells colleagues the truth. That's what stops the 'are you there?' messages:
- Writing a proposal and don't want pings: Do not disturb, with a duration.
- Heads-down but happy to hear about urgent things: Busy.
- Stepping away for a coffee: Be right back.
- Working but not ready to reply: Appear away.
Microsoft's help also mentions that Teams can set you to Do not disturb while you share your screen, and that this is on by default. It's handy on client calls so a private message doesn't pop up in front of everyone.
If your team leans on Teams for meetings, it's worth agreeing how you use status alongside other habits. I've written about the downside of letting an AI note-taker do the listening for your team, and the same principle holds: tools support good habits, they don't replace them.
If your Teams status is stuck or wrong
- Select your profile picture and choose Reset status to clear anything you set earlier.
- Check whether a Duration is still running on another status.
- Look at your calendar. A meeting in progress puts you in a meeting automatically.
- On the web, check the Presence setting and your browser permission.
- Sign out of Teams and back in, then update the app.
- If it's still wrong, contact your IT admin or Microsoft support, because some presence settings depend on your organisation.
And if you're new to working this way, my piece on what remote work involves day to day covers the communication habits that matter more than any dot.
Frequently asked questions
How do I keep my Teams status green?
Select your profile picture, select your current status and choose Available, or type /available in the search box. Teams will still switch to Away if your computer locks, goes idle or sleeps, or if the phone app is in the background.
Why does Teams say I'm Away when I'm working?
Microsoft says Teams sets Away when you lock your computer, when it enters idle or sleep mode, or when the mobile app is in the background. Changing your device's sleep or idle settings gives you longer.
Can I set Available for a set time in Teams?
No. Microsoft says Duration works for any status except Available. You can set Busy, Do not disturb, Be right back or Appear away for a set time instead.
How do I stop Teams showing Away when I use another browser tab?
In Teams on the web, go to Settings, Notifications and Activity, Presence, and turn on Keep my current status when I'm active outside of Teams on the web. Allow activity detection when your browser asks.
What does Be right back mean in Teams?
It tells people you've stepped away briefly. Microsoft says it's never set automatically, so you choose it yourself from your status list or by typing /brb.
