To stop deleting messages on WhatsApp, open the chat, tap the contact's name, tap Disappearing messages and choose Off. New messages will stay. To save one message from a timer, press and hold it and tap Keep before the timer ends.
You open a chat and a message you needed has gone. An address, a delivery time, a client's brief. Very often the cause is the same: disappearing messages has been switched on in that chat, by you or by the other person, and WhatsApp is quietly clearing messages on a timer.
The good news is that it's easy to stop for new messages, and WhatsApp lets you rescue a message before it vanishes. The honest news is that anything already gone is gone. Here's how it all works, based on WhatsApp's help centre.
Why WhatsApp messages disappear by themselves
WhatsApp describes disappearing messages as an optional privacy feature. When it's on, messages vanish 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days after they're sent, depending on the timer chosen. A few details that explain what you're seeing:
- The timer only affects new messages sent after it was turned on, not older ones.
- In an individual chat, either person can switch it on or off, so you might not have been the one who did it.
- Disappearing messages vanish for both sender and recipient, including messages you send to yourself.
- In groups, anyone can turn it on by default, unless an admin has limited that to admins only.
- There can also be a default timer set for all new chats in your privacy settings.
If you suspect that's your problem, open the chat info screen and see what Disappearing messages says.
Turning off disappearing messages in a WhatsApp chat on Android
This stops new messages from vanishing. WhatsApp's steps for a specific chat are:
- Open the chat.
- Tap the contact's name or the group subject at the top.
- Tap Disappearing messages.
- If prompted, tap Continue.
- Tap Off.
- Tap the tick or save icon to apply the change.
WhatsApp says anyone in the chat can turn disappearing messages off at any time. So if the other person keeps switching it back on, you'll need to talk to them about it, because the setting belongs to the chat rather than to you alone.
Turning off WhatsApp disappearing messages on an iPhone or computer
WhatsApp's help pages give the same route on other devices, with clicks instead of taps on a computer: open the chat, click the contact's name or group subject, click Disappearing messages, choose Off, and apply the change. On an iPhone the screens look slightly different, so menus vary by app version, but you're looking for the same Disappearing messages option on the chat info screen.
Switching off the WhatsApp default timer for new chats
If every new chat seems to start with a timer, you've probably set a default. On Android, WhatsApp says to tap the three dots, then Settings, then Privacy, then Default message timer, and choose Off.
Choosing a duration here applies only to new individual chats. WhatsApp shows an option to apply the timer to existing chats at the same time, so skip that if you only want to switch the default off.
Keeping a single WhatsApp message from disappearing
Sometimes you want the feature left on but need to hold on to one message. WhatsApp has a Keep option for exactly this.
- Press and hold the message you want to keep, as long as its timer hasn't run out.
- Tap Keep.
According to WhatsApp, anyone in the chat can keep a message unless a group admin has restricted it. A kept message is visible to everyone in the conversation and won't disappear when its timer ends. You can see your kept messages from the chat info screen, under Kept messages.
What the sender sees when you keep a WhatsApp message
WhatsApp puts the sender in control. If someone keeps a message you sent, you get a notification. If you decide to unkeep it, nobody else in the chat can keep it again. WhatsApp also says that you can't unkeep a message once 25 days have passed after the disappearing message's duration. It's a fair balance: useful for you, but not a way to hold onto things the sender wants gone.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
One more catch. WhatsApp says that if you turn disappearing messages off, you can't keep messages any more, because there's nothing left to keep. So rescue anything important first, then switch the feature off.
Can you get back WhatsApp messages that already disappeared?
Mostly, no, but there is one route worth knowing. WhatsApp says that if a backup was made before a message disappeared, the disappeared message is included in that backup. The catch is that disappearing messages are deleted again when you restore from a backup. So a backup is a way to hold a copy, not a way to bring messages back into the chat.
It's also a good reason to keep an eye on your backups. If yours is misbehaving, my guide to fixing a stuck WhatsApp backup will help. For a wider look at what can and can't be recovered, I've covered whether WhatsApp has a recently deleted folder too.
Other WhatsApp quirks with disappearing messages
- Forwarding: if a disappearing message is forwarded to a chat with the feature off, it won't disappear there.
- Replies: a quoted message in a reply might still be visible after its timer has passed.
- Media: with disappearing messages on, media sent in the chat disappears and isn't saved to your photos.
- Notifications: if you don't open WhatsApp within the time set, the message disappears, but its preview might still show until the other person opens the app.
That media point trips people up. If photos you were sent keep vanishing from your gallery, it may be this setting, not a fault. My notes on controlling what WhatsApp saves to your gallery explain the separate setting that decides what gets saved.
WhatsApp disappearing messages for small business owners
For client chats, I'd keep this feature off by default. Delivery details, agreed scope and addresses are exactly the things you need to find again. If a client has turned it on, it's reasonable to ask them to switch it off, or to copy key details into your own notes or order system as the conversation goes. And if you do want privacy for a sensitive chat, pick the shortest period you're comfortable with and use Keep for anything you need.
If you can't turn off disappearing messages on WhatsApp
- In a group, check whether an admin has restricted the setting to admins only.
- Update WhatsApp, because menu names can change between versions.
- Make sure you're in the right chat. The setting is per chat, so a timer in one chat won't show up in another.

Frequently asked questions
How do I stop WhatsApp messages from disappearing?
Open the chat, tap the contact's name or group subject, tap Disappearing messages, then choose Off and apply the change. That stops new messages from disappearing.
Why do my WhatsApp messages keep disappearing?
Disappearing messages is probably on in that chat. WhatsApp says either person in an individual chat can switch it on, and a default timer can also be set for new chats.
Can I get disappeared WhatsApp messages back?
Generally no. WhatsApp says a backup taken before the message disappeared includes it, but disappearing messages are deleted again when you restore from a backup.
How do I keep one disappearing message?
Press and hold the message before its timer ends and tap Keep. It then stays visible to everyone in the chat, and you can find it under Kept messages in chat info.
Does turning off disappearing messages bring old messages back?
No. The timer only affects new messages, and turning it off doesn't restore anything that has already disappeared.
