To unmute someone on Messenger, go back to the screen you used to mute them. For a group chat on iPhone, open it, tap the name at the top and tap Unmute. On Android, open Notifications & sounds and choose All messages or Mentions & replies only.
You muted a chat to get some peace, and now you're wondering why a client or a friend seems to have gone quiet. That's the classic sign of a muted conversation on Messenger: the messages still arrive, but your phone doesn't make a sound. Unmuting brings the alerts back. The catch is that Messenger's help pages are much clearer about muting than about the reverse, so I'll tell you what they say, where they're silent, and how to work it out on your own screen.
What muting someone on Messenger does and doesn't do
Messenger's help pages describe muting as turning off notifications. You can turn notifications off for all conversations or for a single conversation, and for a group chat that means no alerts for messages, message reactions and mentions. Muting doesn't block the person, doesn't remove the chat and doesn't stop messages arriving. It only silences the alerts. If you're after the first half of the job, my guide to muting someone on Messenger covers it.
Unmuting a group chat on Messenger for iPhone
This is the one place where the help pages name an Unmute button.
- Open the group chat.
- At the top, tap the name of the chat or the names of the people in the chat.
- Find the Mute button below the chat name. If the chat is muted, it offers Unmute.
- Tap Unmute to turn notifications back on.
Unmuting a group chat on Messenger for Android
The Android steps work through a notifications screen instead of a Mute button.
- Open the group chat.
- At the top, tap the name of the chat.
- Tap Notifications & sounds.
- Choose All messages or Mentions & replies only. Off mutes everything, so avoid that one if you want alerts back.
The two choices behave differently. All messages gives you an alert for every message. Mentions & replies only keeps the noise down while still telling you when someone names you or answers you, which is often the right balance for a busy team chat.
Unmuting one person's chat on Messenger
For a single conversation, the help pages describe how to switch notifications off, not a separate unmute article. On iPhone you swipe left on a conversation in Chats, tap More, then Mute and choose a duration. On Android you swipe left, tap the icon and pick how long to turn notifications off. On messenger.com you hover over the chat, click the icon, click Mute conversation and choose how long.
To reverse it, go back to the exact screen you used. Swipe left on the conversation in Chats and see whether the option now reads as a way to turn notifications back on. I can't quote the exact label because Messenger's pages don't give one, and menus vary by app version. If you picked a time limit, the mute should also end by itself once that time is up.
| Where | How the help pages describe muting it |
|---|---|
| iPhone single chat | Swipe left, tap More, tap Mute, choose how long |
| Android single chat | Swipe left, tap the icon, choose how long |
| Computer (messenger.com) | Hover, click the icon, click Mute conversation, choose how long |
| Group chat on iPhone | Tap Mute below the chat name; tap Unmute to reverse |
If you muted every Messenger notification, not one chat
Check the main switch too. On iPhone, tap your profile picture in Chats, then Notifications and sounds, and look at Do Not Disturb. On Android, the same screen has a switch next to On that you can turn off for a chosen time. If that is active, no chat will make a sound, however it's set. If the chat is fine but your phone is quiet, this is the first place to look.
Your phone's own notification settings can also silence Messenger. Check that notifications for the app are allowed in your device settings, because Messenger can't override that.

Unmuting a Messenger contact for business owners and creators
For anyone handling customer messages, a muted chat is a hidden risk. A customer who is waiting for a reply can look ignored when you simply never heard the alert. A good habit is to open your muted chats once a day and scan them, or unmute the ones tied to live jobs. If a chat is unwanted, think about archiving it instead, which tidies your list without losing the conversation.
If you can't find the unmute option on Messenger
- Make sure you're looking inside the right conversation, not the main settings.
- On a phone, scroll the chat information screen, as the notification options can sit lower down.
- Update the app so the menus match the help pages. My guide to updating Messenger has the steps.
- Look at the Do Not Disturb setting under Notifications and sounds.
- Check your phone's own notification permissions for Messenger.
Quick recap on unmuting someone on Messenger
For a group chat, use Unmute on iPhone or Notifications & sounds on Android. For a single person, return to the swipe or hover menu you used to mute them. And if nothing makes a sound at all, check Do Not Disturb and your phone settings.

Frequently asked questions
How do I unmute someone on Messenger?
For a group chat on iPhone, open it, tap the name at the top, then tap Unmute. On Android, open Notifications & sounds and choose All messages or Mentions & replies only. For a single chat, go back to the menu you used to mute it.
Does muting a chat on Messenger block the person?
No. Muting only turns off notifications. Messages still arrive. Blocking is a separate action.
Will a muted Messenger chat unmute itself?
If you chose how long to turn notifications off, the mute is meant to last for that time. Check the chat if alerts haven't returned.
Why do I still get no Messenger alerts after unmuting?
Check Do Not Disturb under Notifications and sounds, and your phone's own notification settings for Messenger.
Can I mute a group chat but still see mentions?
Yes. On Android you can choose Mentions & replies only in Notifications & sounds for that group chat.
