Best Shopify Themes (2026): How to Choose One for Your Store

The best Shopify theme matches your catalogue size, your photography and the way your shoppers browse. Shopify's own Craft, Dawn and Horizon are free. Others are listed alphabetically below, in no particular order and not as a ranking, so you can test demos with your own products.

Your Shopify theme is the shop window. It decides how your products are laid out, how quickly a shopper can filter a long catalogue and how much of the design you can change without touching code. Picking one is a bigger decision than it looks, because everything you add later, from banners to size charts, has to fit inside it. I haven't built a store in every theme for this page, so there's no crowned winner. Instead you'll get how to match a theme to your kind of store, a shortlist in alphabetical order taken from each theme's own Theme Store listing, and a safe way to switch.

Start with your store, not the theme

The most common mistake is to fall for a demo store that sells something nothing like yours. A theme built around large lifestyle photos will struggle with a catalogue of thousands of small parts. A theme designed for filtering and navigation can feel cold for a handful of handmade items. Before you browse, write down three things:

  • How many products you sell: a few dozen, a few hundred or thousands.
  • What your photos look like: bold lifestyle shots, plain product-on-white or a mix.
  • How shoppers decide: by browsing, by filtering on size and colour, or by searching for a specific item.

Those three answers narrow the field far faster than any list of features. If you're still weighing up platforms before you commit, my guide to alternatives to BigCommerce and my guide to choosing a DIY website builder cover the wider decision.

Free themes versus paid themes

Shopify builds a small group of its own themes and lists them as free on the Theme Store, including Craft, Dawn and Horizon. Themes from independent developers are sold through the same store and are listed with their own terms, so check the listing page for what you'd pay and what support is included. Shopify's Theme Store page says developer support and free updates are included with its themes. Whichever route you choose, read the listing for the details that matter to you, because I haven't quoted plan details here.

A free theme is a sensible place to start if you're testing an idea, because you can change to a different one later. A premium theme from a specialist developer can save time if it already includes features such as a countdown timer, a quick-buy button or a before-and-after slider.

Shopify themes to shortlist, in alphabetical order

Each theme below is on the Shopify Theme Store. They're listed alphabetically, in no particular order, and this isn't a ranking. Features and presets change as developers release updates, so check the live listing before you decide.

Be Yours

From RoarTheme. Its listing describes it as a refined theme for skincare, fragrance and beauty brands, with lookbooks, ingredient tabs, before-and-after sliders and shoppable image hotspots. It suits stores that tell a story around each product.

Broadcast

From Presidio. The listing calls it feature rich and designed to drive sales, with countdown timers, back-in-stock alerts, trust badges and filtering, and says it's built to convert mobile-first traffic. It suits shops that lean on promotions.

Craft

A free theme made by Shopify. The listing describes a refined look with generous spacing, elegant typography and storytelling sections. It suits makers and small brands that want a calm, uncluttered page.

Dawn

A free theme made by Shopify, described on its listing as a minimalist theme that lets product images take centre stage. It includes filtering and sorting, a mega menu and enhanced search, so it's a sensible starting point for plenty of small stores.

Focal

From Maestrooo. The listing describes a bold layout for standout tech imagery, with sections for custom landing pages. It suits brands with striking product photography and a story to tell.

Horizon

A free theme designed by Shopify. The listing describes polished design and a clean set-up, with features such as quick view, product badges, recommended products and swatch filters. It suits owners who want to launch quickly.

Impact

From Maestrooo. The listing describes a bold design for entertainment and audio brands, using gradients, large headings and subtle animations. It suits brands that want a distinctive, high-energy look.

Impulse

From Archetype Themes. The listing calls it flexible, fashionable design with strong promotion tools, including a slide-out cart, countdown timer and stock counter. It suits fashion and clothing stores with a modest range of products.

How to choose a Shopify theme without regret

  1. Open the demo store on your phone first, because most shoppers will too.
  2. Search for one of your own products on the demo and see how filtering and search behave.
  3. Check the preset styles, because one theme can look very different across presets.
  4. Read the recent reviews on the listing, especially the ones about support.
  5. Look at the developer's other themes and how often the theme is updated.
  6. Make sure the features you need, such as size charts, swatches or pre-orders, are listed.
  7. Test how quickly the demo loads on a mobile connection.

Speed matters because a slow store loses patient shoppers. Add only the apps you need, compress your images and keep your homepage sections to a sensible number. My guide to boosting conversion on your ecommerce store goes through what to fix once the theme is in place.

How to switch Shopify themes safely

  1. Add the new theme to your library rather than publishing it straight away.
  2. Duplicate your current live theme so you have a copy to go back to.
  3. Preview the new theme with your real products, collections and menus.
  4. Re-enter or check any custom code, tracking snippets and app blocks, because these may not carry over.
  5. Test the cart and checkout on mobile and desktop.
  6. Publish when you're happy, ideally at a quiet time for your store.
  7. Keep the old copy for a while in case you need to roll back.

Changes made in the theme editor belong to that theme, so a new theme may need its sections set up again. Take screenshots of your homepage and key pages before you switch, so you can recreate anything that goes missing.

Mistakes to avoid when picking a Shopify theme

  • Choosing by the demo's photography rather than your own.
  • Loading a theme with features you'll never use.
  • Ignoring how the theme handles your catalogue size.
  • Forgetting that customising code can make updates harder.
  • Skipping the mobile check.
  • Switching themes in the middle of a busy sales period.
  • Overlooking support, which matters most when something breaks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Shopify theme?

There isn't one that suits every store. The best Shopify theme matches your catalogue size, your photography and how shoppers browse. Be Yours, Broadcast, Craft, Dawn, Focal, Horizon, Impact, Impulse, Prestige, Symmetry and Warehouse are all on the Theme Store, in no particular order.

Are there free Shopify themes?

Yes. Shopify's own themes, including Craft, Dawn and Horizon, are listed as free on the Theme Store. Themes from independent developers have their own terms, so check each listing.

Which Shopify theme is best for a small store?

A theme with a simple layout and strong images tends to suit a small range. Dawn and Craft are Shopify's own free options, and others such as Impulse are described as suiting smaller catalogues.

Which Shopify theme is best for a large catalogue?

Look for strong filtering, search and collection navigation. Warehouse's listing says it's built for big catalogues, so it's worth a demo test with your own product types.

Can I change my Shopify theme later?

Yes. Add the new theme to your library, duplicate your current one as a backup, preview the new one and publish when you're happy. Check custom code and apps afterwards.

Will changing theme delete my products?

Your products, collections and orders sit in your Shopify admin rather than the theme. Theme settings and custom code are tied to the theme, so check those after you switch.
