Is Rocket Money Legit? Bank Linking, Premium and Fees (2026)

Rocket Money is a real budgeting and subscription app, formerly called Truebill, which Rocket Companies acquired in late 2021. Its FAQ says bank logins go to its connection partner Plaid rather than to Rocket Money. The catch is that cancelling subscriptions for you is a Premium feature, and bill negotiation carries a success-based fee.

If you run a small business or a side hustle, subscriptions pile up quietly. A tool that finds them and cancels them sounds ideal, but it also asks you to connect your bank, which is where most people hesitate. Here's what Rocket Money says about itself, so you can decide with the facts in front of you.

Who is behind Rocket Money

Rocket Money's FAQ explains that it was originally Truebill, and that Truebill was acquired by Rocket Companies in late 2021. Rocket Companies' own history page lists the Truebill acquisition in 2021 and the move to the Rocket Money name in 2022. So this is an established finance app that sits inside a large, listed company, rather than an anonymous newcomer.

That ownership tells you who to hold responsible. It doesn't tell you whether the app suits you, which depends on what you plan to use it for.

How Rocket Money connects to your bank

This is the question I'd ask first. According to the Rocket Money FAQ, it never accesses your bank login credentials. Instead, your login details are sent direct to Plaid, which it calls its trusted account connection partner.

In plain words, you sign in to your bank through Plaid's connection screen, and Rocket Money receives the account information afterwards. It's still your financial data being shared, so only link the accounts you want it to see, and read the privacy policy before you agree. If you'd rather not link anything, the app isn't for you.

What the free Rocket Money plan includes

The FAQ says you can view and track every subscription on the free plan. So the free version is mainly a look at where your money is going. It lists your recurring charges in one place, and you then cancel them yourself.

For many people that's useful on its own. Seeing a forgotten software trial or a duplicate streaming plan is half the battle, and you don't need to hand over anything beyond the connection.

What Premium adds to Rocket Money

Rocket Money's help centre lists features that aren't available on the free version. Among them are desktop access through a web browser, unlimited budget categories, net worth tracking, full credit reports from Experian, data export, account sharing and subscription cancellation services.

The most talked-about item is cancellation. The FAQ says hands-off cancellation, where Rocket Money contacts the provider for you, is part of Premium. The cancellation help article adds two cautions I'd remember:

  • A charge can still go through before the provider confirms the cancellation, depending on your billing cycle.
  • If no Cancel option appears for a provider, the app shows instructions so you can cancel the service yourself.

In other words, it's a convenience, not a guarantee. Check your bank statement after a cancellation and keep any confirmation.

Rocket Money bill negotiation and its fee

Rocket Money also offers to negotiate some bills for you. Its FAQ says a success-based fee applies only if it saves you money. I'd read the exact fee terms inside the app before you start, because the wording on the day you sign up is the one that counts. Don't rely on a summary, including mine.

Saving with Rocket Money and your money's safety

Premium also includes savings goals. Rocket Money's help article says these are held in a non-interest-bearing custodial plan at an FDIC-insured institution. That's a careful description, and it also tells you the money isn't earning interest there. It's worth reading that article if you plan to move savings through the app, because it's a different arrangement from a normal bank account in your own name.

How to cancel Rocket Money Premium

Rocket Money's help centre says you can adjust your monthly price or cancel Premium in the app, and that cancellation takes effect at the end of your billing cycle. Where you originally signed up can affect where the billing sits, so look at the account settings first, then check your statement.

Who Rocket Money suits, and who should think twice

It tends to suit people who are willing to link accounts and want a fast overview. If you're trying to spend less rather than earn more, the money saving tips that worked for me pair well with an app like this, and my look at online business banking accounts helps if you're separating business and personal spending.

You might think twice if you don't want any third party connecting to your bank, or if you only want a one-off tidy-up. In that case, a manual look through your own statements costs nothing. This isn't financial advice. Check the current terms and your own situation, and ask an accountant if you need tax help.

Spotting fake Rocket Money messages

Because it connects to your bank, scammers love imitating finance apps. Don't click a link in a text claiming your Rocket Money account is locked. Open the app yourself. Rocket Money's FAQ says it never accesses your bank login credentials, so any message asking for your online banking password should make you stop.
