GPT-6 is the new default model in the Chat tab of ChatGPT, rolling out from 7 October on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise and then to Free and Go. To use it, open the model menu, pick GPT-6 (it replaced Latest), set the Thinking slider to Instant, Medium, High or Extra High, and ask as normal. Its big change is Intelligent UI: answers can now arrive as charts, tappable buttons, forms and small interactive tools, with no special prompt needed.
OpenAI switched ChatGPT over to GPT-6 on 7 October, and most people will notice it the first time an answer turns up as a little interactive chart instead of a wall of text. That's the part worth learning. The model itself is quicker and better at web answers, but the way it can now build a tool for you, right inside the chat, is what changes how a small business uses ChatGPT day to day.
This guide walks you through what's new, how to switch it on, which settings matter, and the prompts I'd hand to a busy business owner on day one. Everything here comes from OpenAI's own announcement and help centre.
What's new in GPT-6, in plain English
There are three changes you'll feel straight away.
- Intelligent UI. GPT-6 can mix text with visuals and interactive pieces. OpenAI lists graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts and interactive experiences you use directly in the conversation.
- It starts answering sooner. ChatGPT can now begin its answer while it's still thinking, then add more detail as it goes, so you're not staring at a spinner on harder questions.
- Better web answers. OpenAI says it makes better decisions about when to look something up and more reliably finds information that supports the answer.
It also picks the format to suit the question. A comparison might come back side by side, an explanation might come back as a diagram you can play with, and a simple question still gets a simple text reply.
Which ChatGPT plans get GPT-6?
The rollout started on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise in the Chat tab, then widened to Free and Go the following day. On Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, GPT-6 runs on a model OpenAI calls GPT-6 Sol. OpenAI's announcement names GPT-6 Luna for Free and Go, while its help centre lists GPT-5.6 Luna for those plans, so if you're on Free or Go, the model menu in your own account is the thing to trust.
| Plan | Medium and High thinking | Extra High | Pro effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plus | Included | Not included | Not included |
| Pro | Included | Included | Included |
| Business | Included | Included | Included |
| Enterprise | Included | Included | Included |
| Free and Go | Not included | Not included | Not included |
On Enterprise, access also depends on what your workspace admin has switched on. And if you can't see GPT-6 at all yet, OpenAI says it may simply not have reached your account.
How to switch to GPT-6 and pick a thinking level
- Open ChatGPT on the web or in an updated mobile app and start a new chat.
- Click the model menu at the top. GPT-6 has taken the place of the old Latest option, and it isn't labelled Sol, so look for GPT-6 itself.
- Use the Thinking slider to choose how hard it works: Instant for quick everyday questions, Medium for standard thinking, High for extended thinking, and Extra High for the deepest level GPT-6 Sol offers.
- Type your request the way you'd brief a sharp assistant. You don't need any special wording to get visuals; it decides when a chart or tool would help.
- If an answer comes back as an interactive piece, use it. Change an input, tap a button, fill in the form, and watch it update.
One detail that catches people out: on Plus and Pro, Instant doesn't jump up to a higher thinking level by itself, and typing think harder won't switch it. Move the slider instead.
Getting the most from Intelligent UI
Intelligent UI works on the web and in updated apps whenever you use GPT-6 at Instant through to Extra High. It doesn't run at Pro effort, and OpenAI says the older ChatGPT desktop apps for Mac and Windows don't support it, so use ChatGPT in your browser if your desktop app looks plain.
It has no separate usage allowance either, so trying it doesn't eat into a special quota. Your normal model and plan limits still apply.
Prefer cleaner answers? On ChatGPT on the web, open Settings and turn off Layout and visuals. You'll still see some visual elements, but far fewer.
Ask for the tool, not just the answer
OpenAI's own examples include a calculator to explore how savings could grow, a splitter for a group dinner and a game you can play in the chat. For a business, that same trick turns into quick planners, comparison tables you can sort, and checklists you can tick off. Here are prompts to try.

Prompts for everyday small business jobs
Not every task needs a widget. These work well at Medium or High thinking, and GPT-6 will add a chart or table only where it helps.

What stays the same in ChatGPT
- The update is for the Chat experience. OpenAI says the models behind Work and Codex aren't changing as part of this release.
- Older models aren't being retired by this rollout. If you'd picked GPT-5.6 Sol on purpose, you stay on GPT-5.6.
- Your projects, custom instructions and chat history carry on as before, and changing how one chat looks doesn't change your other chats.
If you've already set ChatGPT up with custom instructions for your type of business, keep them. They shape every GPT-6 answer, visual or not. The same goes for anything you've organised in ChatGPT Projects.
Tools that work well alongside GPT-6
GPT-6 is great at the thinking and planning part. Most small teams then move the result somewhere they already work. These are the tools I see people pair it with most:
- Canva for turning a GPT-6 content plan or outline into finished social graphics and slides.
- Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel for keeping a comparison or planner once you've shaped it in the chat.
- Notion for storing the checklists and process docs GPT-6 drafts, so the team can find them later.
- Trello or Asana for dropping a launch timeline into real tasks with owners and dates.
- Grammarly for a final read of anything customer facing before it goes out.

Frequently asked questions
Is GPT-6 free to use in ChatGPT?
The rollout reached Free and Go the day after it started on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise. OpenAI's announcement names GPT-6 Luna for Free and Go, while its help centre lists GPT-5.6 Luna for those plans, so check the model menu in your own account.
How do I turn on GPT-6?
Open the model menu at the top of a chat and choose GPT-6, which replaced the Latest option. Then pick Instant, Medium, High or Extra High on the Thinking slider. If it isn't there, it may not have reached your account yet.
Do I need special prompts for Intelligent UI?
No. OpenAI says no special prompt is needed. GPT-6 decides when a chart, form or interactive tool would help, and still gives a plain text answer when that's the most useful reply. You can also ask it outright to build a tool.
Why don't I see visuals in my answers?
Intelligent UI doesn't run at Pro effort, and the older ChatGPT desktop apps for Mac and Windows don't support it. Use ChatGPT on the web or an updated mobile app at Instant through to Extra High, and check that Layout and visuals is on in Settings.
Does GPT-6 change ChatGPT Work or Codex?
No. OpenAI says this release applies to the Chat experience, and the models powering Work and Codex aren't changing as part of it.
