Is SoFi Legit? Bank Status, Fees and What to Check (2026)

SoFi is a real, San Francisco-based finance company that went public on Nasdaq in 2021, and its checking and savings accounts are offered through SoFi Bank, N.A., Member FDIC. The catch is that SoFi sells many products, so the fees, eligibility and deposit insurance depend on which one you open. The FTC also settled advertising charges with SoFi in 2018.

Whenever a money app has slick adverts, I want to know who is behind it and what the small print says before I put anything in it. SoFi comes up a lot with small business owners and freelancers who want one place for banking, loans and investing. I've gone through SoFi's own banking page, Wikipedia and the FTC's website so you can see what's documented, not what an ad suggests.

Who is behind SoFi and how long it's been around

Wikipedia says SoFi was founded in 2011 by four graduate students who met at Stanford Graduate School of Business. It began as a student loan refinancer and is headquartered in San Francisco, California. That's a long way from an anonymous app that appeared last week.

It's also a listed company. Wikipedia says SoFi went public through a merger with a special-purpose acquisition company and began trading on Nasdaq as SOFI in 2021. Being listed means it publishes regular filings, which gives regulators and journalists plenty to check. It doesn't mean any product is right for you, but it does answer the first worry of whether a real company stands behind the logo.

Is SoFi a bank?

This is the question behind most searches for whether SoFi is safe. SoFi's banking page says its checking and savings accounts are offered through SoFi Bank, N.A., Member FDIC. Wikipedia adds that SoFi bought Golden Pacific Bancorp, which owns a bank in Sacramento, and that the deal helped it obtain a bank charter.

So the accounts sit with a bank, not just an app. But SoFi also offers loans, investing and other products, and those don't all carry the same protection. Deposit insurance covers money in a bank account. It isn't the same thing as investing in shares, where you can lose money, and I won't comment on investment returns.

How SoFi describes its deposit insurance

SoFi's banking page says members receive industry-standard FDIC insurance of up to 250,000 US dollars per member, and joint accounts are insured up to 500,000 US dollars. It also says up to 3 million US dollars of coverage is available through the SoFi Insured Deposit Program, which requires opting in.

Read that last line twice. The higher limit isn't automatic, so if you're holding a large balance, check exactly what you've signed up for. The FDIC's own website has a tool for checking coverage, and it's the right place to confirm how insurance applies to your situation.

SoFi fees, in its own words

The banking page says SoFi Checking and Savings has no account, service or maintenance fees. It also says there are no fees for overdrafts, minimum balance, dormant accounts or monthly maintenance. The same page lists exceptions: transaction fees apply to outgoing wire transfers, Instant Transfers and global remittance transfers.

  • Normal account use: no account, service or maintenance fees, per SoFi's page.
  • Outgoing wires: a transaction fee applies.
  • Instant Transfers: a transaction fee applies.
  • Global remittance transfers: a transaction fee applies.

Rates and bonuses change often and come with conditions, so I've left them out on purpose. If an offer depends on direct deposit, read the conditions on SoFi's page the day you apply, because that's where the real terms live.

Who can open a SoFi account

SoFi's banking page says applicants must be 18 or older to open an individual or joint account, and no minimum balance is required to open an account. SoFi is a US financial company, so I'd expect US-based applicants, but the page I read doesn't list the full eligibility rules. Check the application for the details that apply to you.

What the FTC said about SoFi's advertising

It's fair to look at a company's history, not just its homepage. The FTC announced in 2018 that SoFi had settled charges and agreed to stop making false claims about student loan refinancing savings. The Commission approved the final order in 2019, and the FTC says it bars SoFi from misrepresenting savings and requires reliable evidence for any savings claims.

That was an advertising case about refinancing claims, not about the safety of a checking account. I mention it for balance: a real, regulated company can still get its marketing wrong, and the lesson for you is to read the terms behind any headline number.

Spotting fake SoFi messages and look-alike sites

Well-known finance names get copied by people who want your login. SoFi's pages describe an app that offers banking, loans and investing. They don't describe a support agent who messages you first, asks for a payment by gift card, or needs your password to fix an account. If a message pushes you to act quickly, stop and open the official app yourself instead of tapping the link.

If you think you've been targeted, report it to the platform and to the relevant US regulator. It's also worth reading my notes on credit card rewards for people with low credit scores, because the same habit of checking terms applies to every product that promises a perk.

Is SoFi worth considering for a small business owner?

It depends what you need. SoFi's banking page describes personal checking and savings, which isn't the same as a business account, so check whether your use case fits before you move any business money. If you're also weighing how to take payments, my comparison of Stripe and PayPal for a small business covers that side separately.

My summary is simple. SoFi looks like a real, regulated company with an FDIC-member bank behind its deposit accounts and a public record you can read. That doesn't tell you it's the best fit, and I'm not giving financial advice. Check the terms for your own situation, and take any complaint to the official regulator.
