To make a timeline in Google Docs, insert a table with a column for dates and a column for descriptions, or draw a line with markers using Insert, Drawing, New. Google's building blocks list doesn't name a timeline block.
A timeline turns a pile of dates into something a client or a team can read in seconds: a project plan, a launch schedule, the story of how your business grew. People are often surprised that Google Docs has no big Timeline button. That's fine. A table or a drawing builds a clean one in a few minutes.
I'll show both routes, using the steps from Google's help pages. I'll also tell you what I couldn't find, so you aren't left hunting for a menu that isn't there.
Checking whether Google Docs has a built-in timeline
Google's page on building blocks says you can find them by clicking Insert, then Building blocks, then View more, or by typing @ and choosing See all building blocks. The categories it names are Featured, Communication, Meetings and Project management. A timeline isn't named on that page, so I'd treat it as not documented.
It's worth a look, though, because the list can change. Open the building blocks and scan the project management group before you build from scratch.
A vertical timeline built with a table
A two-column table is the sturdiest layout, because you can edit dates and descriptions without anything shifting. From Google's table help:
- Click Insert, then Table, and drag across the grid to choose two columns and as many rows as you've milestones.
- Put the date or stage in the left column and a short description in the right.
- Right-click the table and use Distribute rows if you want even spacing.
- Select the left column cells and use the toolbar to set a background colour or border colour.
- Optionally merge cells in the top row for a title: drag across them, right-click and choose Merge cells.
Google says tables can be as large as 20 x 20 cells, which is more than most timelines need. If yours is longer, split it into phases.
A horizontal timeline using a table
For a left-to-right look, flip the layout: one row for dates and one for descriptions, with a column for each milestone. Keep the text short, because narrow columns turn long sentences into tall, thin blocks. A wide, sideways page helps here. Click File, then Page setup, choose Pages and pick the wide orientation, as Google's page settings help describes.
Drawing a timeline line with arrows and markers
When you want a classic line with markers, use a drawing. Click Insert, then Drawing, then New. Click Select line and choose a Line or Arrow, then drag across the canvas. Use Shape to add circles for each milestone, and Insert, then Text Box, for the labels. Google's drawing help says you can change colours, line thickness and style with the buttons above the canvas.
- Draw the main line or arrow across the canvas.
- Add a small shape at each milestone.
- Add a text box beside each shape with the date and a few words.
- Close the drawing window to place it in your document.
Drawings are lovely to look at but harder to edit later, so I'd use them for a finished graphic and keep the working version in a table.
Choosing between a table and a drawing for your timeline
| Question | Table | Drawing |
|---|---|---|
| Easy to edit dates later? | Yes | Less so |
| Looks like a classic line? | Not quite | Yes |
| Good for long timelines? | Yes | Gets crowded |
| Works when text changes length? | Yes | Boxes need resizing |
Making a Google Docs timeline for work
- Project plan: stages, owners and target dates, shared with the team.
- Product or campaign launch: a run of milestones with one line each.
- Company history: the story of your business for a website page or pitch pack.
- Client onboarding: what happens in the first stages after someone signs on.
A timeline also suits a CV or portfolio that tells a career story. My piece on how experienced professionals should format a resume differently to a fresher explains when a timeline layout helps and when a plain list is safer.

Keeping a timeline readable in Google Docs
The most common problem is cramming. Keep each entry to a date and one short line, and put the detail in the body of the document. Use one accent colour rather than several, and keep fonts consistent. If the table crosses onto a second page, add a clean break. My guide to adding a page in Google Docs shows how.
If you need a timeline in Google Sheets instead
Google's help also describes a timeline view for data kept in a spreadsheet. That's a different tool and suits ongoing projects with dates in columns, but for a printable document, a table in Docs is simpler to share.
Timeline on a phone or tablet
You can edit a table in the Docs app, but I couldn't confirm that every drawing tool is available in mobile help. Build the timeline on a computer and make small text edits on your phone.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a timeline in Google Docs?
Insert a table with a column for dates and a column for descriptions, then style it with the toolbar. Or use Insert, Drawing, New to draw a line with markers and text boxes.
Does Google Docs have a timeline template?
Google's building blocks page names Featured, Communication, Meetings and Project management, but no timeline block. Check Insert, Building blocks in case the list has changed.
How do I make a horizontal timeline?
Use a wide, sideways page and a table with a column per milestone, dates in the top row and short descriptions beneath.
What is the easiest way to edit a timeline later?
A table. You can change a date or add a row without redrawing anything.
Can I make a timeline on my phone?
You can edit text in the app, but build the layout on a computer.
