To delete a page in Google Docs, remove whatever fills it: select the text or images and press Delete. For a blank page, show non-printing characters from the View menu and delete the empty paragraph or page break that's holding it open. There's no dedicated Delete page button.
There's no Delete page button in Google Docs, and that's why this question is so common. A page only exists because something fills it: words, a picture, a table, an empty line or a break. Remove whatever is holding the page open and the page disappears.
So the real job is detective work. Is it a blank page at the end? A page you want gone along with its content? A page that sticks around after you've deleted everything? I'll take each in turn, sticking to what Google's help says about breaks and formatting marks.
Deleting a page in Google Docs by clearing its content
If the page holds text or images you no longer want, you're removing the content, not the page itself. Here's the simple route:
- Scroll to the page and click at the very start of the first thing on it.
- Drag down to the end of the page, so everything you want to lose is highlighted.
- Press Backspace or Delete.
- Look at where the cursor lands. If the next page's content has moved up, you're done.
Menus vary a little between versions, and I couldn't find a dedicated Google help article for removing a whole page, so treat this as ordinary editing rather than a special feature.
Deleting a blank page at the end of a Google Docs file
A blank last page is nearly always an empty paragraph, or a break, that has been pushed over the edge of the previous page. You can't see it, so switch on the formatting marks. Google says non-printing characters show in blue and include paragraph, line, section, page and column breaks, plus tabs and spaces. Open View and choose Show non-printing characters.
Now the culprit is visible. Click at the end of the last real line and press Delete until the blank page vanishes, or click on the blank page and press Backspace. The mark marching to the next page is gone, and the page goes with it.
Removing a page break that is creating a Google Docs page
A page break forces everything after it onto a new page. Google's help says to click under the page break and press Backspace or Delete until the break is gone. On Android, the help says to tap below the page break, then delete the break.
If you added the break on purpose, for instance to start a new chapter, check whether you really need it. A heading set to start on a new page can do the same job, and it won't leave blank pages behind when you edit above it.
Dealing with a section break in a Google Docs page
Section breaks can also hold a page open, and Google says their lines are hidden by default. To see them, click View and then Show section breaks. Google adds that this setting applies to every document you open until you change it.
Once you can see the break, click just after it and press Backspace, the same way you'd remove a page break. Be careful, because a section break can carry its own margins or header settings. If the text after it suddenly changes layout, undo and check your formatting.
Why a Google Docs page will not go away
| What you see | What's usually holding the page open |
|---|---|
| A blank page at the end | An empty paragraph or a break pushed over the edge |
| A page after a table | The empty paragraph Docs keeps after a table |
| A page after a heading | A page break or a section break above it |
| A page that comes back | An 'Add page break before' setting on a paragraph |
That last one comes from the paragraph spacing menu. Google lists Add page break before as a paragraph option. If a paragraph keeps jumping to a fresh page, click in it, open Line and paragraph spacing and check whether that option is switched on.

When a table is the reason for a blank page in Google Docs
A table that reaches the bottom of the page can leave its closing paragraph alone on the next. You can't delete that paragraph, so shrink it instead. Select the paragraph mark, make the text size tiny and reduce its spacing, and it will tuck back onto the previous page. You can also trim a line above the table or narrow the margins slightly.
Deleting a page in Google Docs on your phone
The same logic applies in the Docs app: delete the content, or tap below a page break and delete the break. Google's Android help says exactly that for page breaks. Formatting marks and section break lines are easier to find on a computer, so use one for stubborn blank pages.
Checking a Google Docs file after you delete a page
- Scroll the whole document from top to bottom.
- Look at headings that now sit alone at the bottom of a page.
- Check any page numbers, footnotes or links still make sense.
- Switch the formatting marks off again when you finish.
If you're tidying a template, how to fill in a Google Docs template correctly covers the leftover-pages problem from another angle. And if the aim is a one-page CV, how to write a simple resume that gets noticed is a good companion.
Google also warns that pageless documents have no page breaks at all. If you want to see pages, go to File, then Page setup, and select Pages.
