How to Turn Off Shuffle on Spotify (and Smart Shuffle)

To turn off Spotify shuffle on mobile, open the playlist, album or artist profile and tap the Shuffle icon until it shows tracks playing in order. The detail people trip over: Smart Shuffle is a separate setting, and Spotify says free listeners can't switch it off.

You press play on your carefully ordered album and the tracks come out in a random order. Or you queue up a podcast playlist and episodes jump about. It's one of the most common Spotify annoyances, and the fix is usually a single tap, unless Smart Shuffle is the culprit, which is a different story.

Spotify's help pages describe two separate things here, ordinary shuffle and Smart Shuffle, plus Autoplay, which gets confused with both. I'll take them one by one so you can work out which one is messing with your music.

Turning off ordinary shuffle in the Spotify mobile app

Spotify's shuffle article explains that on mobile you use the Shuffle control on a playlist, album or artist profile. The icon shows whether tracks play in order or randomly, so turning it off is a case of tapping it until it shows the in-order state.

  1. Open the playlist, album or artist profile you're playing.
  2. Look for the Shuffle icon and check how it looks. A highlighted icon means random order.
  3. Tap the icon to switch shuffle off.
  4. Start the first track and let the list play through to check it follows the running order.

Menus vary between app versions and devices, and Spotify's help article is written around the mobile app. If your screen looks different, look for the shuffle icon near the main play button or on the Now Playing screen.

What Smart Shuffle on Spotify is and how to switch it off

Smart Shuffle is not the same thing. It mixes recommended tracks into your own list. Spotify says those recommendations carry an Enhance badge next to the artist name on the Now Playing bar, which is a handy giveaway when songs you never added keep showing up.

For Premium listeners on mobile, Spotify's help gives this route for switching Smart Shuffle off:

  1. Tap your profile picture.
  2. Choose Settings and privacy.
  3. Open Playback.
  4. Switch off Include Smart Shuffle in play modes.

Spotify also says Premium listeners can pick a shuffle style, either Fewer repeats or Standard, which changes how random the order feels without turning shuffle off.

Spotify shuffle on a free account: what you can and can't change

Here's the catch. Spotify says that for free listeners on mobile, Smart Shuffle is always active, and its article doesn't describe a way to turn it off. Free listeners can still tap Shuffle on a playlist, album or artist profile, but the help pages don't offer the same off switch for the recommended extras.

If you keep hearing Enhance-badged tracks and you're on a free account, that's the explanation. It isn't a fault with your phone, and it isn't something you've set by mistake.

Spotify shuffle, Smart Shuffle and Autoplay: which one is doing it?

Use this table to match what you're hearing to the setting behind it:

What you noticeLikely Spotify cause
Your album plays out of orderOrdinary shuffle is on
Songs you didn't add appear with an Enhance badgeSmart Shuffle
Music keeps going after the playlist finishesAutoplay
The same few songs keep repeatingTry the Fewer repeats shuffle style on Premium

Autoplay deserves a note. Spotify says it keeps music going after an album, playlist or song selection ends by playing similar songs. On mobile you'll find it under your profile picture, Settings and privacy, then Playback. On desktop, click your profile picture, choose Settings and scroll to Autoplay. It's a separate toggle from shuffle, so switching shuffle off won't stop it.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

There is also a simple test you can use before any event. Press play on the first track, skip forward once, and check that the next song is the one you expect. If it isn't, shuffle or Smart Shuffle is still active, and it's far better to find that out at home than in front of a room full of people.

Shuffle settings for podcasters, shop owners and anyone playing music for others

Order matters more than people think when you're playing music for an audience. A shop owner building an opening-hours playlist wants it to flow. A fitness coach wants warm-up songs before the heavy ones. A podcast host sharing a themed list wants listeners to hear the story in sequence. Turn shuffle off before you share the playlist, and if you're making one for episodes, my guide to choosing podcast recording software covers the production side.

  • Check the shuffle icon every time you press play on a list you care about.
  • Turn Smart Shuffle off if you don't want extra tracks added into a curated mix.
  • Keep Autoplay in mind if music carries on after your list ends.
  • Remember that your settings only affect your own listening, not what other people hear.

If Spotify shuffle won't turn off

Try these in order:

  • Tap the shuffle icon once and watch whether it changes. Some versions need a second tap.
  • Open the Now Playing screen and check the control there too.
  • Check Playback settings for Smart Shuffle if extra songs keep arriving.
  • Update the app, because menus vary by version.
  • Log out and back in to refresh the app.

If it still behaves oddly, Spotify's support pages are the place to ask.
