To delete a Zoom account, sign in to the Zoom web portal, open Admin, select Account Management, then Account Profile, click Terminate My Account, enter your password and click Delete. Zoom says this is permanent, and upgraded accounts must cancel first.
Most of us signed up for Zoom in a hurry, for one call with one client, and then left the account sitting there for years. If you're tidying your logins, switching to a different meeting tool or just don't want an old profile floating around, closing it counts as a sensible bit of digital housekeeping.
The catch is that Zoom doesn't put the delete button in the app. It lives in the web portal, a few clicks deep, and it can't be undone. Here's the route Zoom's help centre describes, what to do first, and what to check if you run a team account.
Before you terminate your Zoom account
Zoom's help centre says deleting is permanent, so a short checklist is worth five minutes of your time. I'd go through these in order:
- Download any cloud recordings and shared files you want to keep, because they'll go with the account.
- Note down the meeting links and recurring schedules you've sent to clients, so you can send new ones from your next tool.
- Check whether any other service signs in with your Zoom login, such as a calendar or booking tool, and switch it to another method first.
- Make sure you're signed in with the right email address. Many people have two Zoom profiles without realising.
If you're moving your recordings across, my walkthrough on finding your webinar recording after a Zoom call shows where they usually end up.
Zoom account deletion steps on the web portal
Zoom's help article describes one route, and it works from a browser rather than the desktop app or phone app. Here's the order it gives:
- Sign in to the Zoom web portal in your browser.
- Open Admin in the navigation menu.
- Select Account Management, then Account Profile.
- Click Terminate My Account.
- Enter your password when asked.
- Click Delete to confirm.
Zoom states that this will permanently delete your Zoom account. There's no undo button and no waiting period mentioned in the help article, so treat the final click as the real thing.
What Zoom says about upgraded accounts and the Owner role
Two conditions trip people up. First, Zoom's help says a Basic (free) account holder can delete the account, whereas an account that has been upgraded must first cancel the upgrade and wait until the billing cycle ends. Second, you need to hold the Owner role. If someone else set up your company's Zoom, you'll need them to do it, or to hand the Owner role across first.
Zoom's separate article on cancelling an upgrade is the one to read if you're in that position. A search summary of that page also notes that cloud recordings stay available for 30 days after an upgraded account ends, which is a handy window for downloading what you need. Treat that as a reminder to check the live page, because Zoom updates these timings.
Closing a Zoom team account with several users
If you run a small business account with staff on it, don't rush to the Terminate button. Zoom's help says admins of multi-user accounts should deactivate, unlink or delete individual users first, and it points to a separate article on exactly that.
In practice I'd tackle it in this order:
- Tell your team the date the account will close, so nobody schedules a client call on a dead link.
- Let each person save their own recordings and files.
- Remove the users one by one using Zoom's user-management steps.
- Only then use Terminate My Account as the Owner.
Zoom delete account versus other ways to step back
People often type this question when they really want something smaller. Here's a quick way to match the goal to the move:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
| What you want | What to look at in Zoom |
|---|---|
| Stop using Zoom for good | Terminate My Account in Account Profile |
| Leave a company's Zoom without losing your own login | Ask the admin about unlinking you from their account |
| Free yourself from an upgrade that's about to renew | Cancel the upgrade in the web portal first |
| Use a different email | Sign out and sign in with the other account |
Zoom also has a help page about signing out and using a different account, which is worth a look if all you need is a fresh start with another email.
What happens to your Zoom meetings once the account is gone
Zoom's delete page doesn't itemise exactly what is removed, so I won't guess at it. What I can say is what any sensible person would expect: your meeting links stop working, recurring invites you've shared become dead ends, and anything stored in the cloud under that account should be treated as gone.
That's the part that matters for a business. A client who clicks an old invite and finds nothing will assume the meeting is cancelled. Send replacement links before you close the account, and if you're swapping tools, pick the new one first. If you're weighing up tools that listen in on calls, my piece on what AI note-takers do with your client data is worth a read before you move.
If you can't find Terminate My Account in Zoom
When the option won't appear, there are usually only a few reasons:
- You're signed in on the app instead of the web portal. Zoom's help describes the web route, so use a browser.
- You're not the Owner. Ask the person who created the account to do it, or to transfer ownership.
- The account is still upgraded and hasn't been cancelled yet. Cancel it, wait for the cycle to end, then try again.
- You're signed in with a company login that sits under someone else's account. In that case it's the admin's call, not yours.
If none of those fits, Zoom's help centre is the right place to ask. Its support team can see account details that you can't from your side.
