How to Record a Google Meet (and Why the Button Is Missing)

To record a Google Meet on a computer, join the meeting, click Meeting tools at the bottom right, choose Recording, then click Start recording. Google says the host must have permission and your Workspace administrator has to allow recording, which is why the button sometimes isn't there.

You hold a brilliant client call, agree three things, and then forget two of them by Friday. Recording the meeting fixes that, and Google Meet has a built-in recorder. The snag is that it doesn't work for everyone, and the reason is rarely anything you did wrong.

Below I'll take you through the computer steps from Google's own help pages, who's allowed to press record, where the file ends up and what to check if the button won't appear. I'll also cover the courtesy side, because recording people is about trust as well as buttons.

Start recording a Google Meet on a computer

Google's help page for recording gives this route on a computer:

  1. Start or join the meeting in Google Meet.
  2. At the bottom right, click Meeting tools, then Recording.
  3. If you want captions saved, choose a language.
  4. Click Start recording.
  5. Click Start in the pop-up and wait for the recording to begin.

To finish, open Meeting tools, then Recording again, click Stop recording and confirm in the pop-up. Google also says recording stops by itself when everyone leaves. Menus can differ slightly between versions, so if a label looks different, look for the Recording option inside Meeting tools.

Who can record in Google Meet

This is the part that trips up most people. According to Google's help, participants can only record a meeting if the host has permission to record. You can record if you're one of these:

  • The meeting host.
  • An outside guest who has been promoted to co-host.
  • Someone from the host's organisation when Host Management is off.
  • A teacher or co-teacher in a Google Classroom meeting.

Google adds that you can't record if you've joined only to present. Education accounts have extra rules: Fundamentals and Standard accounts can't record meetings they organise, while Education Plus accounts can.

Why the Google Meet record button is missing

If you can't see Recording, there are three things to check, all of which come from Google's help:

  • Your Google Workspace administrator has to allow recording for your account. Google's admin help describes a Recording setting that organisations can switch on or off.
  • Your edition has to support it. Google's help names editions such as Business Standard and Enterprise Standard as examples, so a free personal account may not show the option.
  • You need enough Google Drive space, both on your own quota and your organisation's.

If you run a small business on Workspace, ask whoever manages it to check the Recording setting first. If that's you, the admin console is where you'll find it. For other quirks, Google keeps a separate page for troubleshooting recording issues in meetings.

Where a Google Meet recording is saved

Once the meeting ends, you won't get a file straight away. Google says the recording goes to the meeting organiser's Google Drive, inside a Google Meet folder with a subfolder for each meeting. An email with the link is sent to the organiser and to the person who started the recording, and the link is also added to the Calendar event.

That matters for teams. If a colleague organised the call and you pressed record, the file lives in their Drive, not yours. Agree in advance who's going to share it. If you're trying to track down a Zoom file instead, my guide on finding a webinar recording after a Zoom call covers that side.

Google also says Meet saves the chat log as .SBV files when continuous meeting chat is off. When continuous chat is on, no .SBV file is generated.

What a Google Meet recording captures

According to Google, a recording covers the active speaker and anything presented. Captions can be saved if you chose a language. Other windows and notifications on your screen aren't captured. There's also a time limit: Meetings can only be recorded for a total of 8 hours, after which recording stops automatically.

What you'd like to knowWhat Google's help says
Does it show everyone? It captures the active speaker and anything presented
Can I record on my own?Only if you're the host, a co-host or otherwise allowed
Where does it go?The organiser's Drive, in a Google Meet folder
How long can it run?A total of 8 hours, then it stops

Telling people you're recording a Google Meet

Google says participants get a notification when the recording starts or stops, and people outside your organisation and those on mobile are notified but can't control it. Administrators can also require explicit consent before features like recording or transcription start. That setting is off by default.

Even so, I'd always say it out loud: "I'm going to record this so I can send you the notes, is that okay?" It takes five seconds and it's good manners. Rules on recording conversations differ from place to place and I'm not a lawyer, so check the rules that apply to you, particularly for calls with people in other countries.

If you're considering an AI notetaker to do the same job, my piece on what an AI note-taker does with your client data is a useful read before you add one to a call, and so is the problem with AI meeting notetakers nobody warns you about.

Using your Google Meet recording for your business

A recording is raw material. A few ideas that work well for freelancers and small teams:

  • Pull out action points and send them to the client within the hour.
  • Share a training call with colleagues who couldn't make it.
  • Turn a good Q&A into an article or a handful of social posts, after checking everyone is happy for you to do so.

Keep recordings tidy, name them clearly and delete the ones you don't need. Client conversations are private by default.

When a Google Meet recording won't start or won't appear

  • You're on a phone. Google's newer help pages treat recording as a computer feature, so use a laptop or desktop.
  • The host hasn't given you permission. Ask them to promote you to co-host.
  • Drive is full. Free up space or ask your admin about storage.
  • The file hasn't arrived. Give it a little time after the meeting, then check the organiser's Meet Recordings in Drive and the Calendar event.
