Yes, Traba is a legit staffing app founded in 2021 and backed by well-known investors, matching background-checked workers with warehouse, manufacturing and delivery shifts. Pay goes through Stripe, usually within 2-3 business days, or faster with Quick Pay for a small fee. The catch: Traba says its workers are independent contractors, so no tax is taken off your pay.
Traba is newer than most of the shift apps people ask me about, which is exactly why it gets the 'is this real?' question. I've read Traba's own site and its worker help centre, plus TechCrunch's coverage of its funding, to see how it treats the people doing the shifts. In short, it's a real company with a clear process, but you'll want to understand its contractor model and pay rules before you start.
Who started Traba and who's funding it
Traba's About page says it was founded in 2021 by Mike Shebat, its chief executive, and Akshay Buddiga, its chief technology officer. TechCrunch reported that Traba raised a 20 million US dollar Series A round led by Khosla, with Founders Fund and General Catalyst taking part, at a post-money valuation of 120 million US dollars.
Those are big, established Silicon Valley investors, and they don't usually back operations that vanish overnight. Today, Traba pitches itself to businesses as light industrial staffing for warehousing, manufacturing and final-mile delivery, and its homepage cites 400K US work-eligible, background-checked workers on its books.
What onboarding with Traba involves
Traba's General Application Information article sets out three onboarding steps:
- Account setup. Add a payment method and fill in a W-9 form.
- I-9 verification. Submit an I-9 form, which confirms you're allowed to work in the US.
- Background check. Wait for your background check to be completed and cleared. Traba says checks are a standard part of onboarding, and TechCrunch reported they're run through Checkr.
Once you're through, you browse open shifts in the app, confirm the ones you've accepted and clock in and out at the site. Keep your profile and contact details up to date, because businesses see them when you're matched.
Traba's independent contractor model
This is the part to read twice. Traba's help centre says plainly that all workers on the platform are independent contractors, and that Traba doesn't deduct any taxes from your pay. Your Form 1099 is available through your Stripe account at tax time.
Being a contractor means more flexibility, but also more responsibility. You won't get employer benefits on those shifts, and you'll need to set money aside for tax and file it yourself. Traba's help centre also has a separate section for W2 employees, which suggests some roles are run differently, so check which kind of work you're accepting. If in doubt, speak to an accountant about your own situation.
How and when Traba pays
Traba pays through Stripe. Its Payment Processing Times article says all 1099 payments go through Stripe, with no other payment methods available. Here's the timeline it gives:
- Your first 3 shifts are paid on Standard Pay, which is mandatory at the start.
- Standard Pay typically arrives in 2-3 business days.
- Some businesses pay weekly, and Traba says you'll be told before you start working with them.
Traba's workers page promises that you'll always know how much you're earning before and after each shift. Pay rates are set per shift, so compare them carefully, and factor in travel time to the site.
Traba Quick Pay: the faster option and its fee
After you've built a track record, you can get your money faster. Traba's Quick Pay FAQ says it unlocks after 3 perfect shifts in a row and can pay out as quickly as 30 minutes after a shift. There are conditions:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- It works only with eligible debit cards at participating banks, not credit cards, prepaid cards or bank transfers.
- It costs 1.5% of the amount, or 50 cents, whichever is greater.
- Shifts of less than 4 hours don't qualify.
- Earnings above 300 US dollars via Quick Pay in a single day go back to standard timing.
- No-shows, late cancellations and leaving shifts early can cost you your eligibility.
Traba's attendance rules
Traba is built around reliability, because that's what it sells to businesses. Its help centre has articles on confirming shifts, running late, getting turned away and suspensions and bans. The message is consistent: confirm the shifts you've accepted, cancel through the app as early as you can if your plans change, and don't simply not turn up. Repeated problems can lead to penalties on your account and, as the Quick Pay rules show, slower pay.

Spotting fake Traba job offers
Newer apps are easy targets for impersonators, because fewer people know what the real process looks like. Now you do: a W-9, an I-9 and a background check, all handled inside Traba's own app. Be wary of anyone who messages you offering Traba shifts and asks for a sign-up fee, your Stripe login or a code sent to your phone. Payments come only through Stripe, so someone offering to pay you another way isn't following Traba's rules.
Is Traba a good fit?
Traba is legit. It's a venture-backed company with a clear onboarding process and documented pay rules, and Quick Pay is handy once you've proved you're reliable. The trade-off is the contractor model, so treat your earnings as self-employed income and keep money aside for tax.
