To clear your TikTok cache, tap Profile, then the Menu button, Settings and privacy and Free up space. Tap Clear next to Cache, then Clear again to confirm. The thing people trip over is the same screen's Drafts option: it's separate, so leave it alone unless you want to delete unposted videos.
If TikTok has started stuttering, videos hang on a blank screen or your phone keeps warning you about storage, the cache is the first place I'd look. It builds up quietly as you scroll, and TikTok gives you a button to clear it inside the app.
This matters whether you're a casual scroller or you run a business account and need the app working when you're about to post. Here's the route TikTok's own Help Center gives, what else sits on the same screen, and what to try if clearing the cache doesn't fix things.
Clear the TikTok cache inside the app
TikTok's troubleshooting article lists these steps, and they're the same on iPhone and Android:
- Open TikTok and tap Profile at the bottom.
- Tap the Menu button at the top.
- Select Settings and privacy.
- Tap Free up space. You may need to scroll down to find it.
- Tap Clear next to Cache.
- Tap Clear again to confirm.
The confirm step is easy to miss, so wait for the second prompt before closing the app. Once it's done, restart TikTok and see whether the problem has gone.
What the TikTok cache holds
TikTok's Help Center describes cache as temporary files, and says clearing them can remove files that may be causing problems. It suggests doing this if your connection is fine but the app still misbehaves, or if TikTok is using too much storage on your phone.
Think of it as the app's scrap paper. It's there to make things load faster, but it can grow large or hold a file that has gone wrong. Clearing it gives TikTok a fresh start.
The other options on TikTok's Free up space screen
The same screen has more than one control, and it's worth knowing what each one is before you tap anything:
| Item on Free up space | What TikTok's help article says to do |
|---|---|
| Cache | Tap Clear, then Clear again to confirm |
| Downloads | Tap Clear next to Downloads |
| Drafts | Tap Manage, then Select, choose the drafts and tap Delete |
Here's my advice for creators: leave Drafts alone unless you mean it. Drafts have their own Manage button for a reason, and deleting one removes work you haven't posted yet. Clearing the cache is a separate step, so you can do it without going near your drafts.
When clearing the TikTok cache helps
- Videos freeze, buffer or show a black screen even on good Wi-Fi.
- The app feels sluggish or slow to open.
- Your phone says storage is almost full and TikTok is one of the biggest apps.
- Your Following or Followers list won't load. TikTok's following article lists clearing the app video cache in Settings and privacy as one of its fixes.
If effects or filters refuse to load, cache can be part of it, but there are other causes too. I've covered those in my guide on why some TikTok effects won't work on your device.
TikTok's first steps before and after clearing the cache
Clearing cache is one item on TikTok's troubleshooting list. The Help Center suggests working through the rest as well:
- Restart the TikTok app and your device.
- Make sure TikTok is updated to the latest version, and keep your phone's operating system up to date.
- Check your connection by switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Clear the cache as above.
Two more items on the same TikTok list are easy to overlook. If your battery is low, the Help Center suggests closing apps you aren't using, TikTok included, and turning down screen brightness. And if you can't post because TikTok can't reach your photos, microphone or camera, check that your phone has given the app those permissions. Neither is a cache problem, but both can look like one when you're in a hurry.
If TikTok keeps saying you're offline when you're clearly connected, my piece on the TikTok no internet connection error goes through that problem in more detail.

Clearing TikTok cache from your phone settings
Your phone's own settings may offer storage tools for each app too. On Android, many phones list a storage option for each app, and on iPhone you can see how much space each app takes in the storage section of Settings. Menus vary by phone and software version, and TikTok's help article doesn't describe these routes, so I'd always start with the in-app Free up space screen. It's the method TikTok documents, and it lets you see exactly what you're clearing.
If clearing the TikTok cache doesn't fix the problem
Sometimes the issue isn't the cache at all. If you've cleared it, restarted, updated and checked your connection and TikTok still won't behave, tell TikTok about it. The Help Center says to tap Need more help? at the bottom of the help article in the app and follow the steps to send a ticket. Screenshots of the error help, so grab one before you report.
TikTok also notes that some features are tested with a limited group of people, so a missing button may simply mean it hasn't reached your account yet, rather than anything being broken.
A simple TikTok cache routine for busy accounts
If you post often for your business, I'd make clearing the cache part of your regular tidy-up, say once a month or whenever the app starts to feel heavy. Do it when you're not about to go live or post, then restart the app so it's fresh when you need it. It takes a minute and saves a lot of frustration on a busy day.
