German Tax ID Rules for Selling on TikTok Shop in Germany

Yes, TikTok Shop is available in Germany. You can sell as a sole trader (a VAT ID is required), as a company, or as an individual with a personal tax number and no registered business.

Germany is on TikTok's list, which settles the main question. Where it gets interesting is the tax paperwork, because the German seller page changes what you have to provide depending on whether you're a sole trader, a company or someone selling without a registered business. That's the part I'd read twice before you start, so it's where I'll begin.

The German tax ID rule that decides your route

TikTok's German seller page says it in three short lines. Company sellers in Germany don't need a USt-IdNr., the VAT ID. Sole traders in Germany do have to provide one when they register. Individual sellers who have no registered business give a personal tax number instead.

So the same shop can ask for three different identifiers, and getting it wrong is an easy way to stall at verification. If you're a freelancer who's been trading under your own name, check whether you've registered as a sole trader. If you have, find your VAT ID before you open the form. If you haven't registered anything, the page says you can still sell, which brings me to the next point.

You can sell on TikTok Shop in Germany without a registered business

The page lists four seller types: a sole trader with a registered business, an individual seller without one, a private company and a publicly listed company. It also states in German that you don't need a registered business to sell on TikTok Shop. For someone clearing out a wardrobe or testing a hobby product, that's a low barrier.

I'd add a note of care. German commercial and consumer rules can treat regular selling as a business even when you haven't registered one, and TikTok's page doesn't say where that line sits. I'm not a lawyer and neither is TikTok's registration form, so if you plan to sell regularly, ask a German accountant or your local Gewerbeamt before you assume the individual route is right for you.

What else TikTok asks for in Germany

  • A business address. Sole traders and companies use the address from their official registration; individuals use their personal address.
  • Details that match your official national documents and registrations. TikTok warns that mismatches can delay verification.
  • A phone number and email that haven't been used before. Each can register only one seller account worldwide.

The page says there are no fees at the start. It doesn't give commission rates, payout timing or the payout currency, so I won't pretend to. Euro payouts are likely for a German shop, but treat that as something to confirm inside your seller account, not as a promise from me.

Selling from Germany to the rest of Europe

Here's a real advantage of registering in Germany. TikTok says sellers registered in Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland or Spain can sell in 13 European countries. The page doesn't name those 13, so check the list in your account before you plan your shipping and your language options.

If cross-border sales are your goal, a German registration sits alongside seven other starting points, so pick the country where your business and your documents are strongest.

Creators in Germany: affiliate sales and Creator Rewards

There are two separate creator routes and Germans can use both. First, TikTok Shop affiliate: creators collect rewards from products sold through their videos, LIVE and product showcase without holding stock, and TikTok says it's for people aged 18 and over.

Second, Creator Rewards, which pays for qualified views on longer videos. Germany is one of eight countries where it's open. The programme asks for a personal account, at least 10,000 followers and 100,000 video views in the last 30 days, and qualified views have to come from the countries where the programme runs. I've covered the numbers side in my guide to what TikTok pays per 1,000 views in Germany.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

These two are easy to confuse. A commission on a product sale doesn't depend on your follower count in the same way, and a Creator Rewards payment doesn't depend on selling anything.

For contrast, my page on TikTok Shop in Australia shows what the picture looks like when a country isn't on TikTok's list, including what Australian brands do instead.

Questions to settle before you register

  1. Am I a sole trader, a company or an individual?
  2. Which tax ID does that type need, and where is it?
  3. Do my documents spell my name and address the same way?
  4. Is my phone number and email unused on TikTok Shop?
  5. Do I want to stay in Germany or reach the wider European group?
