Does Twitch Pay in South Africa? Rand, Fees and Tax Treaty

Yes, Twitch pays South African streamers once they reach Affiliate or Partner and set up a payout method, and I found no Twitch page listing South Africa as unsupported. ACH and SEPA don't apply, so the realistic routes are eCheck or local bank, PayPal, check or wire.

South African streamers ask me this a lot, usually with a half-finished channel and a lot of late nights behind them. Here's the short version before the detail: Twitch pays Affiliates and Partners wherever its payout system can reach them, and I couldn't find any Twitch page that lists South Africa as unsupported. What I also couldn't find is a published country-by-country list of payout methods, so I'll tell you what Twitch does document and be clear about where the gaps are.

Twitch only pays South African streamers who reach Affiliate first

Nobody gets paid for simply going live. Twitch's Affiliate requirements are 50 followers, at least 8 hours streamed, streams on at least 7 different days and an average of 3 or more concurrent viewers, all inside a 30 day window. Until you hit those, you're a regular channel and there's no revenue share to collect.

Once you're Affiliate, Twitch pays 1 cent for every Bit someone uses to Cheer for you, and the standard subscription split is 50/50 after deductions such as taxes and processing fees. Twitch's Partner Plus levels (60/40 and 70/30) are open to Affiliates too, which is worth knowing if your community grows.

How the money reaches a bank account in South Africa

South Africa isn't in the US and it isn't in the Eurozone. That matters, because Twitch's Payout Details FAQ says ACH direct deposit is for US residents only and SEPA local bank transfer is for Eurozone residents only. Neither route is yours.

The routes that remain are the ones Twitch lists for everyone else: eCheck or local bank, PayPal, check and wire transfer. Twitch describes the non-US local bank or eCheck option as a conversion from US dollars into your local currency, which for you means rand, at the wholesale exchange rate and for a fee. The Affiliate Onboarding Guide adds that the methods you see can vary by region, so open your own payout settings before assuming anything.

The rand is issued by the South African Reserve Bank and divided into 100 cents. Whatever route you take, the conversion into rand happens somewhere along the way, so ask your bank what it adds on top of Twitch's own charges.

The payout rules every South African streamer should know

  • The payout minimum is 50 US dollars for eCheck or local bank, PayPal, ACH and check. Wire transfers need 100 US dollars because of transfer fees.
  • If you're under the minimum, the balance carries forward to the following month rather than disappearing.
  • Twitch's Payout Details FAQ lists the bank wire fee as 16.00 US dollars for creators outside the US, and it says the schedule doesn't include a currency exchange fee of 2.50% of the transaction.
  • The payment processor charges a transaction fee each time you're paid, and also when a payout is rejected because the details were wrong.

Twitch's 2022 move to the lower 50 US dollar minimum was rolled out country by country. The list in that announcement started with Argentina, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain and Taiwan and later named Australia, Chile, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Peru. South Africa isn't named in any of it, which tells me nothing about your account today, so check what your own dashboard says the minimum is.

South Africa's tax treaty position is better than most on this list

This is the part that separates South Africa from, say, Kenya or Nigeria. Twitch's onboarding includes tax information, and the IRS publishes a list of countries that have a tax treaty with the United States. South Africa is on it, and the treaty has applied since 1998.

In the IRS's Table 1, the royalty columns for South Africa (know-how, patents, film and TV, copyrights) all show 0. I need to be careful here: I couldn't confirm how Twitch classifies your streaming income for treaty purposes, so I can't tell you that 0 is what you'll see on your own payments. What I can say is that the treaty exists and it's worth bringing to your tax interview and to a South African accountant, because a country with no treaty has nothing to point to.

What to do while you build towards Affiliate

Most South African channels spend months below the Affiliate line, so it helps not to hang everything on one platform. If you also make short videos, my breakdown of what TikTok pays South African creators covers a faster-moving option, and how YouTube pays in South Africa is the right place for longer content that keeps working after you've gone offline.

Frequently asked questions

Will Twitch pay me in rand?

Twitch pays in US dollars. The non-US eCheck or local bank option converts into your local currency at the wholesale exchange rate for a fee, and your bank may add its own charges.
