Sponsored Email: What It Is and How a Dedicated Send Works
A sponsored email is a paid placement in someone else's email list. It can be a section inside a regular newsletter issue or a dedicated send, where the whole email is about one brand. The publisher sends it to their own subscribers, labels it as a partnership and the sponsor gets the clicks.
Sponsored email or dedicated send: the difference
| Sponsored section in an issue | Dedicated send | |
|---|---|---|
| What readers see | The publisher's own content with your block inside it | An email about your product and nothing else |
| Who writes it | Usually the publisher, from your brief | The publisher, often with more of your input |
| Best for | Simple offers and steady awareness | Launches, demos and products that need a story |
| Attention | Shared with the rest of the issue | All on you |
| Main risk | Getting lost in a crowded issue | Readers ignoring it if the list gets too many |
Who counts as the sender, and why sponsors should care
Here's the part most sponsors never ask about. The FTC's CAN-SPAM compliance guide says that when an email promotes more than one marketer, the marketers can choose one of themselves as the designated sender, who must be named in the "from" line and follow the law's rules, including a working opt-out link and a valid postal address. If the designated sender falls short, the guide warns that "all marketers in the message may be held liable as senders."
The same guide says each email that breaks the law can carry a penalty of up to 53,088 US dollars (FTC figure, edited January 2024, checked October 2026). So before you book a sponsored email, ask whose name is in the from line, whether the list is opt-in and whether every send carries an unsubscribe link. A publisher who sends to their own subscribers from their own name ticks those boxes; one who sends to a rented list may not.
How to brief a sponsored email that gets clicked
- Give the publisher one problem your product solves, in the words your customers use.
- Pick one action: a free trial, a demo or a download. Not all three.
- Share one proof point the publisher can check, such as a customer story or a feature they can try.
- Send a tracked link and say what counts as success for you.
- Let the publisher write it in their voice. Their readers trust that voice, not yours yet.
- Agree the label and the from line before anything goes out.
Sponsored emails in my newsletter
I offer both. The first is a featured slot inside the Sunday newsletter. The second is a solo email feature, which I describe on my partner page as "A dedicated send to the entire subscriber list. One brand, one focus, undivided attention." Both go to the readers of my own Sunday newsletter, which, in the words of my newsletter page, is "Read by 15,000 entrepreneurs, marketers, founders, and business owners."
If you're deciding which to book, how newsletter sponsorship works covers the booking itself, how newsletter ad rates are set explains how to compare quotes, native advertising on blogs shows the blog side of the same idea, and what an advertorial is covers the long-form version.
My verdict
A dedicated send is the strongest thing a newsletter can sell, and the easiest to waste. Book one when you've got something worth a whole email and a publisher whose readers already trust them. For everything else, a well placed section in a regular issue is the smarter test.
If you want to put your product in front of my readers, start with how partnering with me works. Tell me three things: what you're promoting, what you want to achieve and your ideal timing, and I'll tell you straight whether it makes sense. If you'd like to see the newsletter for yourself first, read about the Sunday newsletter here.

A sponsored section sits inside the publisher's regular issue. A dedicated email is a whole send about one sponsor.
Who is the sender of a sponsored email under CAN-SPAM?
