I'm Lilach Bullock, a British AI consultant and trainer with 23 years in marketing. To use AI for lead generation, let it research prospects, personalise outreach, build lead magnets and run follow-ups, while a person checks every message. Use it to send better emails, not more of them, and know the consent rules before anything goes out.
AI has made it easy to send thousands of emails a day, which is exactly why so many of them get ignored. The businesses getting good leads from AI aren't sending more. They're sending fewer, better messages to the right people, and following up well.
I've worked in marketing for 23 years, and lead generation has always rewarded relevance over volume. AI doesn't change that. It just makes relevance far quicker to produce.
Where AI helps most in lead generation
These are the jobs where AI saves the most time and lifts results, as long as a person stays in the loop.
- Prospect research: summarising a company's website, recent posts and news, so your first message references something real.
- Personal outreach: first drafts that a person edits, rather than one template sent to everyone.
- Lead magnets: checklists, guides and templates built from your own expertise, faster.
- Landing pages: drafts of headlines and copy you can test.
- Follow-up: sequences that remind people politely, so warm leads don't go cold.
- Lead scoring: summarising enquiries so you call the best ones first.
A step-by-step setup
This is the order I'd follow in a small business.
- Write down who your best customers are and what made them buy.
- Use AI to build a list of similar companies from public information, then check it by hand.
- Create one lead magnet that solves a real problem for that audience.
- Draft outreach with AI, then edit each message so it sounds like you and mentions something specific.
- Set up a short follow-up sequence and stop after a few polite touches.
- Track replies and meetings, not emails sent.
The UK email rule that catches people out
Here's the one most people miss. The Information Commissioner's Office guide to PECR says you must not send marketing emails or texts to individuals without specific consent. There's a limited exception for your own previous customers, often called the soft opt-in, and the ICO says it doesn't apply to prospective customers or new contacts such as bought-in lists.
The surprise is who counts as an individual. The ICO says sole traders and some partnerships are treated as individuals, so you can only email them if they've consented or they're existing customers who didn't opt out. You can email corporate bodies such as companies and limited liability partnerships, and the ICO says it's good practice to keep a do-not-email list of any that object. So an AI tool that scrapes thousands of small business emails and blasts them is likely breaking the rules for every sole trader on the list. The ICO notes this guidance is under review after the Data (Use and Access) Act, so check the current version.
What not to automate
Don't let AI send messages nobody has read. Don't buy scraped lists and feed them to an AI sequence. Don't let AI invent claims about results or clients to make an email sound impressive. And don't run so many follow-ups that people mark you as spam, because that damages every email you send afterwards.
Content that brings leads to you
The best lead generation doesn't feel like outreach at all. Useful content that answers your buyers' questions brings people to you, and AI search tools increasingly recommend businesses whose content answers questions clearly. My guide to AI SEO for small business covers how to get found that way, and if your follow-up is where leads slip away, my page on AI sales email sequences shows a simple structure.
Measuring whether it works
Ignore the number of emails sent and the number of contacts added. Watch reply rate, meetings booked, and how many of those meetings turn into customers. If AI helps you send twice as many messages but replies stay flat, you've created more work and more risk for nothing. If replies rise because messages are more relevant, you're doing it right.
A lead magnet AI can help you build this week
Pick the question your best customers ask before they buy, and turn the answer into a one-page checklist or short guide. Give AI your own notes, emails and past answers on the topic, ask it to organise them into clear steps, then edit the result so every point is something you'd stand behind. Add a simple landing page that says who it's for and what they'll get. That single asset gives your outreach a reason to exist beyond 'can we have a call?', and it keeps working long after the first email.
My advice on AI lead generation
Use AI to make every message more relevant, not to send more messages. Research each prospect, edit every email, follow up politely and stop. Build one strong lead magnet and content that answers real questions. And check the consent rules where your prospects are before anything goes out, especially for sole traders in the UK.

Frequently asked questions
How do I use AI for lead generation?
Use it to research prospects, draft personal outreach, build lead magnets and landing pages, and run polite follow-ups, with a person checking every message before it's sent.
Can I email sole traders in the UK without consent?
The ICO says sole traders and some partnerships are treated as individuals, so you need their consent or a soft opt-in as an existing customer.
Is it legal to email bought lists with AI?
In the UK, the ICO says the soft opt-in doesn't apply to bought-in lists. Emailing individuals on them without consent breaks PECR.
What should I measure in AI lead generation?
Replies, meetings booked and customers won, not emails sent or contacts added.
