I'm Lilach Bullock, a British AI expert who helps UK business owners and marketing teams put AI to work on real tasks. I'm an AI implementation consultant, trainer and speaker with 23 years in marketing, I've spoken at more than 100 events, and I use ChatGPT and Claude in my own business every day.

Type 'AI expert UK' into a search bar and you'll find researchers, engineers, safety scientists, policy advisers and people like me. They're all experts, and they're not interchangeable. The first useful thing I can do is help you work out which kind you need.

I'm the practical kind. I've been in marketing since 2003, I built, scaled and sold a digital marketing agency, and in 2024 I went all in on AI and rebuilt my consultancy around getting it working inside small and mid-sized businesses. I don't build models. I build the workflows your team uses on a Monday morning.

Four kinds of AI expert, and which one you need

Each of these people would describe themselves as an AI expert, and each would be right. What separates them is the problem they solve. Here's the quick way to tell them apart before you book a call with anyone:

  • Researchers push the science forward. They're brilliant, and rarely the right call for a business that wants faster proposals
  • Engineers build and train models and data systems. You need one if AI is your product
  • Safety and policy experts study the risks of advanced AI for governments and regulators
  • Implementation experts get existing tools working in your business, train your team and set the house rules. That's where I sit

What the UK's AI Security Institute does

The UK has a government body for the safety end of the field. GOV.UK's page about the AI Security Institute says its mission is to equip governments with a scientific understanding of the risks posed by advanced AI, and that it conducts research and develops and tests mitigations.

What that means for you: the experts working at that level are focused on advanced AI and on informing government. If you run a business, your question is a different one: how do we use the tools that exist today, safely, on our own work? That calls for an implementation expert, and for written house rules on what AI can and can't be used for in your business.

The record behind the title

Anyone can put 'AI expert' on a profile, so here's what sits behind mine. Forbes listed me twice as a Top 20 Social Media Power Influencer. Career Experts named me the Number One Digital Marketing Influencer in the UK. I won Best Mumpreneur of the Year, which came with tea at 10 Downing Street, and the Global Women Champions Award for Entrepreneurship.

I've spoken at more than 100 events internationally, including TEDxBolton and Oxford University, and I've been published in or quoted by Forbes, Entrepreneur.com, HuffPost and Smart Insights. I've worked with brands including Twitter, Dropbox, IBM, monday.com, Greenpeace and Hootsuite.

Ways UK teams work with me

  • Implementation: one workflow at a time, built inside the tools you already use
  • Training: hands-on sessions built around your team's own weekly tasks, online or in person, and if you're comparing trainers, see my guide to AI training providers in the UK
  • Fractional leadership: a senior AI lead without a full-time hire, explained on my page about the fractional AI officer role
  • AI search: getting your business ranked on Google and named by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot
  • Speaking: keynotes of 45 to 60 minutes, 90 minute hands-on workshops and panels

How to vet any AI expert in the UK

Whoever you shortlist, me included, put them through the same four questions:

  1. Can you show me something you built and still use, not a slide about it?
  2. What will you leave behind: workflows, written rules, trained people?
  3. How will we know it worked a month from now?
  4. What won't you do? A good expert has a clear answer

Why AI projects stall, and how I avoid it

The usual pattern is a burst of enthusiasm, a pile of new tools and nothing changed three months later. It comes from starting with the tool instead of the task, and from nobody owning the workflow after launch. I've written about why AI implementations fail in more depth.

My test is simple: is someone doing a specific task differently a month later? If they aren't, the work isn't finished, and I keep following up until someone's working differently.

My plain advice if you're looking for an AI expert in the UK

Decide first whether you need someone to build AI, study it, or use it in your business. If it's the third, look for a person who runs their own business on AI and can show you the workflows working. Ask for a small first project with a clear finish line rather than an open-ended arrangement. And make sure whoever you hire leaves your team more capable, not more dependent on them.
