For most categories on eBay.com, eBay takes a final value fee of 13.6% of the total sale amount, including shipping and sales tax, on items up to 7,500 US dollars, plus 30 or 40 cents per order. In the UK, private sellers pay no final value fee at all, according to eBay's UK help pages.
eBay is one of the few big selling sites where the answer changes completely depending on which side of the Atlantic you're on. A US seller pays a percentage on almost every sale, while a UK private seller clearing out the loft pays nothing when an item sells. I've split this guide so you can jump to the part that fits you, and every figure comes from eBay's own fee pages.
How eBay's final value fee works in the US
The final value fee is the main thing eBay takes. It's charged when your item sells, and eBay's US fee page sets it for most categories at 13.6% of the total sale amount on items up to 7,500 US dollars. Above that, eBay charges 2.35% on the portion over 7,500.
The key phrase is total sale amount. eBay says that means the item price, handling, the shipping the buyer pays, sales tax and any other applicable fees. So the percentage bites on more than your item price, and a big postage charge raises the fee too.
The per-order fee
On top of the percentage, every order carries a small fixed fee: 30 cents for orders of 10 US dollars or less, and 40 cents for orders over 10 US dollars. On cheap items this flat charge can matter more than the percentage, which is why many sellers bundle low-value things together.
eBay categories with a different take
Not every category uses the standard rate. These are some of the ones eBay lists separately on its US fee page:
- Books and Magazines, Movies and TV, Music: 15.3% on sales up to 7,500 US dollars.
- Trading cards and comic books: 13.25% up to 7,500 US dollars.
- Athletic shoes sold for 150 US dollars or more: 8%, with no per-order fee.
Jewellery, watches, handbags and bullion have their own tiers as well. If you sell in a niche, open eBay's fee table and find your exact category before you set prices, because the difference between two categories can be several percentage points.
What eBay takes for listing in the US
Listing is mostly free for casual sellers. eBay gives you 250 free listings a month, and more if you subscribe to an eBay Store. After those, the insertion fee is 35 cents per listing. Optional upgrades, such as bold titles or subtitles, are charged separately and are worth skipping until you know an item needs the extra push.
How much eBay takes from UK private sellers
This is where eBay.co.uk stands apart. eBay's UK private seller page says that private sellers won't pay final value fees or regulatory operating fees when their items sell. Cars, motorcycles and other vehicles are the exception, with their own fees.
UK private sellers still pay for some things:
- 35 pence per listing once you've used your 300 free listings for the month.
- Optional listing upgrades, if you choose them.
- A 3% international fee on sales delivered outside the UK.
Business sellers on eBay.co.uk have a separate fee schedule, so if you're registered as a business, read that page rather than the private seller one.
Extra charges that raise what eBay takes
A few situations push the US fee higher than the headline rate:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Below Standard rating. If your account is rated Below Standard, eBay adds an extra 6% to final value fees on the following month's sales.
- International buyers. An international fee of 1.65% applies when the buyer is outside the US and you don't ship through eBay International Shipping.
- Promoted listings. If you pay to promote a listing, that ad rate is charged on top when a promoted item sells.
The Below Standard surcharge is the one to fear, because it applies to everything you sell that month. Shipping on time, answering messages and keeping returns smooth protect your rating and your margin.
When eBay pays US sellers
eBay pays sellers directly to a linked bank account. By default, eBay initiates payouts daily, and you can switch to weekly, biweekly or monthly in Seller Hub. After a payout goes out, eBay says it typically takes another 1-3 business days to clear in your checking account. Weekend and holiday payouts move to the next business day.
Your Payments tab in Seller Hub shows each order's fees, the amount held and what's been sent. Checking one order there is the quickest way to see what eBay took on your own sales.

How eBay sellers keep more of each sale
- Price postage carefully. In the US the fee applies to shipping, so charging the real cost keeps the fee down.
- Bundle small items, so the per-order fee is spread across more value.
- Watch your seller rating every month to avoid the Below Standard surcharge.
- Use free listings first and only pay for upgrades where they help.
- Sell handmade or digital work elsewhere too. My guide to how much Etsy takes from sellers compares a different fee model.
eBay is a solid side-hustle channel, but treat it as one stream. My list of fast, legitimate ways to make money online has others you can run alongside it.
eBay's fees vary by country and category and can change, so always check the fee page for your own country before you price. Selling income may be taxable, and eBay may report sales to tax authorities, so ask an accountant or your national tax office about your own position.
