How to Get a WhatsApp Click to Chat Link

If you are skim reading
The short version: a WhatsApp click to chat link is just a URL built from wa.me plus your full phone number in international format, with no plus sign, spaces or zeros, and you can add a pre-filled message with ?text= on the end.

The short version: a WhatsApp click to chat link is just a URL built from wa.me plus your full phone number in international format, with no plus sign, spaces or zeros, and you can add a pre-filled message with ?text= on the end. You don't need an account, an app or a developer to make one, you need about ninety seconds and a calculator-level grasp of your own country code.

It's a web address that, when someone taps it, opens WhatsApp with a chat window already pointed at your number. No saving your contact, no searching, no typing your business name wrong. That's the whole trick, and it's why these links turn up on websites, Instagram bios, email signatures, business cards and Google Business Profiles everywhere.

WhatsApp built this officially. It's not a hack, it's not a third-party tool pretending to be clever, it's a documented feature that uses the wa.me domain, which WhatsApp (and by extension Meta, since you might also want to read who owns WhatsApp) controls directly.

The exact format, step by step

  • Start with https://wa.me/
  • Add your full phone number in international format
  • Remove the plus sign, dashes, spaces and brackets
  • Remove any leading zero from the local number
  • Optionally add ?text= followed by a message, with spaces written as %20 or plus signs

So for a UK mobile that's normally written 07700 900123, the international format is +44 7700 900123. Drop the plus, drop the leading zero on the 07700, and you get:

https://wa.me/447700900123

For a US number like +1 (212) 555-0147, you'd write:

https://wa.me/12125550147

For an Israeli mobile like +972 50-123-4567, drop the plus and the leading zero on 050:

https://wa.me/972501234567

That leading zero trip-up is the single most common mistake I see on business cards and email footers. People copy their local number, slap wa.me/ in front, forget the zero has to go, and the link either fails or opens a chat with a completely different stranger who happens to own that number once the zero's dropped elsewhere. Check it by clicking your own link from a different phone before you print anything.

Adding a pre-filled message

This is the bit most guides skip past too quickly, and it's the part that earns you replies. Add ?text= to the end of your link, followed by the message you want pre-loaded into the chat box. The person still has to hit send, nothing is sent automatically, but a pre-filled message does two things: it removes the "what do I even say" friction, and it tells you exactly which link someone clicked if you're running several.

Worked example: say you run a small plant hire business and you've got three touchpoints driving traffic, a Google Business Profile, an Instagram bio link and a flyer at the local garden centre. You could build three versions of the same number:

  • https://wa.me/447700900123?text=Hi%2C%20I%20saw%20your%20Instagram%20and%20want%20a%20quote
  • https://wa.me/447700900123?text=Hi%2C%20I%20picked%20up%20your%20flyer%20at%20the%20garden%20centre

Same destination, three different opening lines, which means you instantly know which channel brought you the enquiry without touching any analytics software. That's a free attribution system most small businesses never bother setting up because they assume tracking means tags and pixels.

Using the official tool instead of building it by hand

If you don't trust your own arithmetic with country codes, WhatsApp has a free link generator at faq.whatsapp.com where you type your number and message into two boxes and it spits out the finished URL. It's the same output you'd get building it manually, it just removes the risk of typos. For anyone managing links for multiple staff or locations, building them by hand once you know the format is faster, but the generator is a sensible first stop if this is new to you.

A click to chat link is only useful if it sits somewhere people are already looking. The usual places:

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • Website header or a sticky "Chat with us" button
  • Instagram and TikTok bio links
  • Google Business Profile website field or as a custom button via a link-in-bio page
  • Email signatures
  • Printed material, QR-coded for anyone scanning rather than typing

Turn any wa.me link into a QR code with a free generator and you've got a scannable version for shopfronts, menus or invoices. The link itself doesn't change, you're just presenting it differently.

The uncomfortable bit nobody mentions

Here's what most "how to" pages leave out: a click to chat link opens a chat with your personal or business WhatsApp number exactly as it is, which means whoever clicks it sees your profile photo, your status, your last-seen setting and your About text, unless you've locked those down in privacy settings. I've seen business owners hand out a slick-looking wa.me link on a professional flyer while their profile photo is a holiday snap from a decade ago and their status says "at the beach." Before you publish any click to chat link, go into WhatsApp settings and check what a stranger sees when the chat opens, because the link works perfectly and still makes you look unprepared.

On a related note, if you're worried about automated replies muddying a first impression, it's worth knowing how to control Meta AI inside WhatsApp so an AI assistant doesn't jump into a conversation a customer thought was going straight to you.

Click to chat versus a WhatsApp Business account

You can build a wa.me link using a personal WhatsApp number, but if you're doing this for a business, switch to WhatsApp Business first. It's free, it adds a business profile with your address, hours and website, and it opens up quick replies and labels, which matter the moment more than a handful of people start clicking your link. A personal account with a click to chat link bolted on top looks exactly like what it is.

If your plan is to use WhatsApp for broader reach rather than one-to-one chat, it's also worth knowing the difference between a chat link and a WhatsApp Channel, which works more like a broadcast than a conversation; there's a separate piece on how to monetize a WhatsApp channel if that's the direction you're heading.

  • Leaving the plus sign in the number
  • Keeping the leading zero on the local number
  • Using spaces instead of %20 or + in the message text
  • Forgetting the country code entirely and only using the local number
  • Not testing the link from a phone that doesn't already have your number saved

That last one matters more than people think. If you test a link from your own phone and your number's already in your contacts, WhatsApp shows your saved name instead of proving the link resolves correctly for a stranger. Test it from a phone, or at least a contact, that's never heard of you.

What this is useful for beyond sales enquiries

Once you understand the format, the same wa.me structure works for internal uses too, not just customer-facing ones. You could put one in an onboarding document so a new hire can message HR directly, or use it as a faster alternative to building out a full contact list when you only need one-off outreach, similar in spirit to the approach covered in messaging an unknown number on WhatsApp without saving it. And if your click to chat link is going to feed into a shared team conversation rather than a single inbox, it's worth knowing how to set up a WhatsApp group so enquiries don't just pile up in one person's personal chat.

Privacy matters here too. If you're going to be fielding a steady stream of first-time chats from strangers, it's worth deciding in advance whether you want read receipts turned off, because nothing kills a sales conversation faster than a customer seeing two blue ticks and silence for six hours.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a WhatsApp Business account to use a click to chat link?

No, it works with any WhatsApp number, personal or business, but using WhatsApp Business gives you a real profile, hours and quick replies, which looks far more credible once people start clicking.

Why does my wa.me link open the wrong chat or fail to load?

Almost always it's the number format: a leftover plus sign, a leading zero that should have been removed, or a missing country code. Rebuild it from scratch using country code plus local number with no symbols.

Can I track how many people click my WhatsApp link?

WhatsApp itself doesn't give you click analytics, but you can wrap the wa.me link in a link shortener that tracks clicks, or create several versions with different pre-filled text so you can tell from the opening message which source someone came from.

Is a click to chat link the same as a WhatsApp QR code?

They're the same destination presented two ways. A QR code is just a scannable image of the wa.me link, useful for print material where typing a URL isn't practical.
