The short version: There is no built in or trustworthy way to see who viewed your Instagram profile, with or without an app. Instagram does not track or share that data with anyone, ever. Any app, website or browser extension claiming to show you profile viewers is either a scam, a data harvesting tool, or both, and you should not install or log into one. What you can rely on instead is who viewed your Stories, who watched your Reels, and detailed insights if you have a professional account.
Why this feature doesn't exist, however much people want it
I understand why this gets searched constantly, everyone wants to know who's checking them out. But Instagram has been consistent on this for years, it does not show profile visitors, and it never has, on any account type, personal or professional. There is no hidden setting, no premium feature, no workaround built into the app that reveals this. If a friend tells you they've found a way to see profile viewers, they're mistaken, not lying, usually because they've been shown fake data by one of the scam apps.
Why every app claiming to show profile viewers is a scam
Instagram doesn't provide this data through its official API to any third party, which means there is no legitimate technical way for an outside app to know who viewed your profile. Any app or website that claims otherwise is doing one of a few things, none of them good:
- Showing you completely made up names and numbers that have no connection to real viewers, just to keep you engaged with the app or website.
- Asking for your Instagram login details directly, which hands over full access to your account, including your direct messages, your ability to post, and your personal information.
- Requesting broad permissions that let it scrape your contacts, followers list or personal data to sell on or use for further scams.
- Charging a subscription fee for a feature that provides no real information at all.
My advice to every client who asks me this is the same: never enter your Instagram password into any third party site or app claiming to reveal profile viewer data. If you've already done this, change your Instagram password immediately and check your account's login activity for anything unfamiliar.
What you can see on Instagram
While profile views are completely private, Instagram does show you several other useful pieces of activity data, and these are worth using well instead of chasing something that doesn't exist.
Story viewers
Anyone who watches your Story is listed, in order, under the viewer count at the bottom of your Story while it's live, and for a short period after it expires. This is the closest thing Instagram offers to visibility into who's actively checking on you, since watching a Story usually means someone specifically opened your profile or saw it in their feed and engaged with it.
Reel views and engagement
You can see total view counts, likes, comments, shares and saves on your Reels. While this doesn't name individuals the way Story viewers does, the pattern of who's liking and commenting regularly gives you a genuine sense of who's engaging closely with your content.
Close Friends list activity
If you post to your Close Friends list specifically, you can see exactly who from that smaller list viewed the Story, which is a more targeted version of the same Story viewer feature above.
Professional account insights
If you switch to a professional (creator or business) account, Instagram's built in Insights tool shows you data like reach, impressions, profile visits as a total number, and where your traffic is coming from, such as your bio link, hashtags, or the explore page. Note this shows total profile visits as an aggregate number, not a list of names, but it's a solid way to understand how much traffic your profile is getting and why.
Followers and following changes
You can see who has recently followed or unfollowed you by checking your followers list over time, or using Instagram's own notification when someone new follows you. This won't tell you about someone who viewed your profile without following, but it is real, accurate data rather than a guess.
How to make the most of what Instagram gives you
- Post to Stories regularly if you want real visibility into who's checking your account, since Story viewers is the single closest thing to a real answer Instagram offers.
- Switch to a professional account if you want aggregate data on profile visits and where traffic is coming from, it's free and doesn't require a business to use it.
- Pay attention to who consistently likes and comments early on your posts, that pattern is a more reliable signal of genuine interest than any fake viewer list could ever be.
- Never hand over your Instagram login to a third party site promising viewer lists, no matter how convincing the reviews or screenshots look.
What to do if you've already used one of these apps
If you've installed a profile viewer app or logged into a website with your Instagram credentials, go into Instagram's settings and check Apps and Websites under your account security settings, remove anything you don't recognise or no longer want connected, and change your password. It's also worth checking whether that password was reused anywhere else, and updating it there too if it was.
Why these scam apps keep appearing despite never working
New profile viewer apps show up constantly in app stores and search results because the demand for this feature never goes away, and there's real money to be made from people who don't know it's impossible. Some of these apps make money purely from ad impressions while you scroll through fake results. Others are built specifically to harvest login details, which can then be used to take over accounts, send spam from your profile, or be sold on to other scammers. A smaller number ask for payment through a subscription, banking on the fact that most people won't notice or bother cancelling once they realise the data is fake. None of this changes based on how polished the app looks or how many reviews it has, since reviews on these apps are frequently fake too.
How to spot a profile viewer scam before you install anything
- Any app or site asking for your Instagram username and password directly, rather than using Instagram's own official login screen, should be treated as unsafe by default.
- Claims of seeing viewers instantly with no delay, when Instagram itself has never offered this data to any outside developer, are a clear sign the results are fabricated.
- Reviews that all sound similar, are posted in a short burst, or read like generic marketing copy rather than genuine user feedback are a common pattern on these apps.
- A request for broad permissions well beyond what a simple viewer list would need, such as access to your contacts or media library, is a strong warning sign regardless of what the app claims to do.
Better ways to spend that curiosity
If the real goal behind wanting to know your profile viewers is understanding your audience better, Instagram's own tools do a decent job of that already. Regularly reviewing your Story viewers, checking which posts generate the most saves and shares, and watching your Insights data over a few weeks if you're on a professional account will tell you far more about genuine interest than a fake viewer list ever could, because it's built on real, verified activity rather than numbers pulled out of thin air.

Frequently asked questions
Is there any official Instagram feature coming that shows profile viewers?
Instagram has never announced or hinted at building this feature, and given how consistently it has ruled it out over the years for privacy reasons, I would not plan around it appearing.
Can businesses see more detail than personal accounts about who visits their profile?
Business and creator accounts get more analytics through Insights, including total profile visits and traffic sources, but still not a named list of individual visitors. The extra detail is aggregate, not personal.
Do screenshots of my profile notify me?
No. Instagram does not notify you when someone screenshots your profile page. It only notifies for screenshots in specific, limited contexts like disappearing photo or video messages in some regions, not general profile browsing.
Why do some apps show accurate looking follower names as viewers?
These apps often just pull your existing followers or following list and present a random selection of those names as viewers, which can look convincing because the names are real accounts, they're simply not accurate viewer data.
Is it safe to use a third party app if it only asks for my username, not my password?
Be cautious either way. Even apps that don't ask for a password directly may ask you to log in through a fake Instagram style screen designed to capture your details, or may still request excessive permissions. The safest approach is to avoid third party profile viewer apps entirely.
