GEO for Professional Services

GEO for professional services means being named when people ask AI engines for an expert in your field. Lead with a direct answer on who you help and the problem you solve, add Person and Service schema, use question-based FAQ content, show real outcomes, and earn third-party mentions. AI engines favour clear expertise with visible credibility.

The short version: GEO for professional services is about getting your firm named when a buyer asks an AI "who is the best consultant for X" or "which firm should I use for Y". High-value B2B buyers research quietly through AI before they ever fill in a contact form. If AI names competitors and not you, you are cut from the shortlist in silence. Why GEO for professional services matters now

Professional services sell trust, and trust now gets pre-screened by AI. A buyer asks "best management consultancy for a turnaround", "who does ISO certification consulting", "recruiter for fintech leadership", and the AI gives a shortlist with reasons.

These are long, expensive, relationship-led deals. Being the named, credible firm at the very start of that journey is worth far more than another cold outbound email nobody opens.

What is different about GEO for professional services

Authority is everything here, and AI reads it from verifiable signals, your people, their track record, your published thinking, and where you get cited. Specialism matters as much as authority. The firm known for one clear thing gets named. The firm that does "a bit of everything" does not.

How to do GEO for professional services

Lead with answer-first pages for each service and sector, results and proof up top. Put your experts forward with real credentials and real outcomes, because that is the experience an AI looks for. Publish the thinking your buyers actually search for, then earn your name on the sources AI trusts, industry bodies, respected press, and events. My guide on the sources AI trusts lays it out.

Keep the site crawlable, answer real buyer questions plainly, and keep proof current.

What I see professional services firms get wrong

They write abstract, jargon-heavy copy that says nothing an AI can quote. They bury the experts and the results. They treat thought leadership as a brochure rather than answers to real questions. Then a sharper, more specific firm gets named instead.

Lawyers, solicitors and accountants all feature in my AI Overviews study of local service searches.

How this fits the bigger picture

This is one application of a method that works for any expertise-led business. The foundations are in the full GEO guide, and the same principles that get a small business found by AI scale up to a firm of any size.

FAQ

Is GEO worth it for a small B2B firm? Yes, often more so, because being specific and credible is easier when you are focused, and that is exactly what AI rewards.

How long does it take? Months. Authority and earned mentions build slowly, which is why early movers are hard to displace.

Can we buy our way into AI answers? No. There is no paid placement. You earn it by being the clear, credible, well-cited answer.

More on getting found by AI:

The short version: GEO for professional services means structuring your expertise so AI tools like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews can find it, trust it, and quote it to potential clients. Law firms, accountants, and consultants who publish clear, well-sourced answers to common client questions get cited more often than those relying on traditional SEO alone. The goal is simple: become the answer AI gives when someone asks a question in your field.

What I Changed on My Own Site After Testing GEO for Six Months

I ran an experiment on my own site starting in January. I picked twelve blog posts about lead generation and social selling, all ranking reasonably well in Google, and rewrote the opening 150 words of each to directly answer a specific question rather than build up to it. Then I checked which ones started showing up in ChatGPT and Perplexity answers when I asked variations of those questions. Nine out of twelve started appearing within about eight weeks. The three that did not were the ones still written in a "in this post we will cover" style intro, even after I thought I had fixed them.

The pattern I noticed: AI tools seem to pull sentences that read like standalone facts, not sentences that depend on the paragraph before them. For example, one line that got quoted almost verbatim in a Perplexity answer was "Most professional services firms lose warm leads within 48 hours because nobody follows up by phone." That sentence works on its own. Compare it to something like "As we discussed above, timing matters a lot" which needs context to mean anything, and never got picked up.

I also added a short FAQ block with four questions to each post, written the way a client would type them into a chat tool, not the way an SEO tool suggests. Things like "how much should a solicitor spend on marketing per month" instead of "solicitor marketing budget guide." That single change was responsible for more citations than any other edit I made, based on tracking with a simple weekly search log across three AI platforms.

One honest caveat: none of this moved organic Google traffic in any noticeable way over the same period. Rankings stayed flat. So if you are doing this expecting a rankings bump, you will be disappointed. What it did do was start putting my firm's name into answers when someone asked ChatGPT for accountant or consultant recommendations in a specific city, which is a different kind of visibility than a page-one ranking, and one that most professional services firms are not tracking at all right now because there is no dashboard for it yet. I check it manually, once a week, by asking the same ten questions and noting who gets mentioned.

Frequently asked questions

What is GEO and how does it differ from SEO for professional services firms?

GEO, or generative engine optimization, focuses on getting your content cited by AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews, rather than just ranking in traditional search results. For professional services, this means writing content that directly answers client questions with clear, well-structured, and factually sound information that AI systems can easily extract and quote.

Which types of content work best for GEO in law, accounting, or consulting?

FAQ pages, service explainer articles, and content that answers specific client questions tend to perform well. Including credentials, case examples, and clear definitions helps AI systems verify your authority and trust your content enough to cite it as a source.

Do professional services firms need to change their whole content strategy for GEO?

Not entirely. Most firms build on existing content by adding structured formatting, clearer answers, and stronger sourcing. Small adjustments like adding FAQ sections, using descriptive headers, and citing credentials often make a bigger difference than starting from scratch.

How long does it take to see results from GEO efforts?

Results vary, but many firms notice AI citations within a few months of consistently publishing structured, authoritative content. Regular monitoring of how AI tools reference your firm helps you refine your approach and identify which topics or formats earn the most citations.
