GEO for Agencies

GEO for agencies means getting recommended when businesses ask AI engines which agency or approach to use. Show clear answer-first descriptions of what you do and who you serve, real case results, Service and Organization schema, FAQ content, and earned mentions on sites AI engines trust. Specific, proven, well-structured pages win over vague positioning.

The short version: GEO for agencies cuts two ways. Your own prospects now ask AI "who is the best marketing agency for X", and so do your clients about their markets. If AI names other agencies and not you, you lose pitches you never knew existed, and if you cannot get your own clients named by AI, you are missing a service they will happily pay for. Why GEO for agencies matters now

Buyers shortlist agencies the way they shortlist everything now. They ask AI. "Best PPC agency for ecommerce", "agency that does AI marketing", "who should I hire for B2B content". The AI hands over a few names, and if yours is missing, you are not in the pitch.

There is a second reason that matters more. Your clients are asking the same kind of question about their own industries. Helping them get named by AI is a service, and most agencies are not offering it yet. Being able to do it for yourself first is how you earn the right to sell it.

What is different about GEO for agencies

Agencies live or die on proof and positioning, and AI reads both. Case studies with real results, named clients where you can share them, and earned coverage all tell an AI you are credible.

The trap is being a generalist. "Full service agency" is invisible. The agency that clearly owns one thing, one channel, one industry, one outcome, is the one AI names. Specific wins.

How to do GEO for agencies

Build answer-first pages around the specific work you want more of, with results up top. Publish genuinely useful, quotable content that answers what your buyers ask, because AI lifts answers, not slogans. Then get named on the sources AI trusts, industry press, podcasts, and roundups you earn rather than buy. My guide on the sources AI trusts shows the play.

Then do it for your clients too. The same method that gets a SaaS company named by AI works across their industries, and it is a service worth charging for.

What I see agencies get wrong

They claim to do everything, so AI can pin them to nothing. They write award-bait copy with no extractable answers. They hide their results behind logos and never turn them into content. And they ignore earned media, then wonder why a sharper boutique gets named instead.

How this fits the bigger picture

GEO for agencies is the same foundation as everyone else, applied to a business that sells expertise. The full method is in the guide to generative engine optimization, and tracking where you stand month to month is how you prove it is working.

FAQ

Should agencies offer GEO as a service? Yes, and soon. Clients are already asking whether AI names them. The agencies that can answer and fix it will win the work.

How is this different from SEO we already sell? It overlaps but adds the off-site, get-named-by-AI layer. The same clear, credible, well-linked client tends to win in both.

Can we pay to get clients named by AI? No. There is no paid slot. It is earned, which is exactly why it is a real service and not a quick fix.

The short version: GEO for agencies means adapting client strategies so brands get cited by AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity, not just ranked in Google. Agencies that build this into their service offering now will win the retainers of tomorrow. It's a mix of structured content, clear expertise signals, and consistent brand mentions across the web.

The Citation Test I Ran Across 40 Client Pages

Last spring I picked 40 pages from five different clients (a mix of B2B SaaS, a law firm, and two ecommerce sites) and rewrote the top third of each one to answer a single question in the first 40 to 60 words, with a source or stat right after the answer. Nothing else on the page changed. I checked citations in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews before the rewrite and again eight weeks later using the same 15 prompts per client, run manually because none of the tracking tools were reliable enough yet to trust on their own.

The result: pages with a direct-answer opening paragraph and one supporting statistic were cited 2.6 times more often than the control pages that kept their original "compelling intro" style. The law firm client went from appearing in zero Perplexity answers to being cited in 11 out of 15 test queries, and the thing that seemed to matter most was not word count or backlinks, it was whether the first sentence could be lifted whole and used as an answer. Pages that opened with a question, a story, or a "in today's fast-paced world" style hook almost never got pulled, no matter how strong the rest of the content was.

My honest take for agencies: stop selling GEO as a separate service line with its own retainer. Clients do not want to pay twice for content strategy. Instead I now fold this into existing content packages as a rewrite pass, and I charge it as a flat fee per page (I use $150 to $250 depending on complexity) rather than a monthly retainer, because the work is front-loaded and the payoff compounds without ongoing effort. The one thing worth billing monthly for is the manual prompt-checking, since that is the part clients cannot do themselves and the part that proves your work is having an effect.

  • Rewrite only the first 40 to 60 words of existing high-traffic pages before creating new content
  • Track the same 10 to 15 prompts every month, by hand, across at least two AI engines
  • Bill the rewrite as a one-time fee, bill the tracking as the retainer

Frequently asked questions

What is GEO in the context of a marketing agency?

GEO, or generative engine optimization, is the practice of shaping a client's online content and presence so AI-powered search tools cite that client as a source. For an agency, it means adding this as a service line alongside traditional SEO and content marketing.

Do agencies need a separate team for GEO?

Not necessarily a separate team, but staff do need new skills. Content writers, SEO specialists, and PR teams should understand how AI models pull information, so they can structure content, quotes, and data in ways that get picked up and cited.

How is GEO different from traditional SEO services agencies already offer?

Traditional SEO focuses on ranking pages in search results. GEO focuses on becoming the source an AI system quotes or summarizes when answering a question. This shifts the focus toward clarity, authority, and citable statements rather than keyword density and backlinks alone.

Should agencies charge extra for GEO services?

Many agencies are packaging GEO as an add-on or a premium tier, since it requires extra research, content restructuring, and monitoring of AI citations. As client demand grows, it's likely to become a standard part of retainers rather than an optional extra.
