How to Turn Off Read Receipts on Messenger: What Facebook Says

Facebook's help pages don't document a switch to turn off read receipts on Messenger in standard chats. What they do show is the sent, delivered and seen icons, plus Active Status, which is separate. You can hide when you're online, but the seen notice isn't covered by it.

This is one of those questions where I'd rather tell you what Facebook's own help pages say than repeat what a video promised you. I went looking for an official switch that turns off read receipts in a normal Messenger chat, and Facebook's help pages don't document one. What they do document is how Messenger shows you the status of a message, and a separate setting called Active Status that people often mix up with it. If you run a Page or answer customers on Messenger, understanding the difference matters, because it changes how quickly people expect a reply.

Can you turn off read receipts on Messenger?

According to the Messenger Help Centre articles I read, there's no setting listed for turning off read receipts in standard chats. The help article on message status simply explains that Messenger shows when a message has been sent, delivered and seen. It doesn't offer a way to stop the seen notice from appearing.

I'd also be careful about two things you may see online. First, menus and features vary by app version and region, so a setting that someone mentions may not be in your app. Second, Facebook can change this at any time. If your own Messenger settings show an option for read receipts, trust that screen over anything written here, including this page.

What the other person sees when you read their Messenger message

Facebook's help says that when your friend has seen your message in a computer chat, their profile picture, a small circle, appears below the message. On the Messenger app, the Help Centre says a small version of someone's profile picture will appear below the message when they've seen it. In group chats, that small picture shows who has seen it.

Older Messenger help wording describes it slightly differently: Sending, Sent and Seen notices that show in grey text below your most recent message, and Seen means the other person has viewed it. That's a good reminder that what you see depends on your app version. I've explained all the icons in my guide to what Delivered means on Messenger.

Why Active Status is not the same as read receipts

Active Status is the setting that shows whether you're active or recently active. Facebook's help describes it as showing when you're active, and says that if you turn it off in one app, such as Messenger, you might still appear active in a different app, such as Facebook. To hide it, you turn it off in both.

The Active Status articles I read don't say it changes what shows beneath your messages. So switching it off won't be a way to hide the seen notice, as far as the official help says. It's still worth doing if what bothers you is people seeing you online. The steps, according to Messenger's help:

  1. Open Messenger and tap Menu, then Settings.
  2. Tap Active status.
  3. Tap the toggle next to Show when you're active, and tap Turn off to confirm if asked.

On a computer, Facebook's help says to click the Messenger icon at the top right, click Options next to Chats, choose Active Status and switch it off, then click Save. Remember to repeat it in each app. I've written about what the indicator itself means in my guide to the green dot on Facebook and Messenger.

What you can do if you don't want to be seen reading a message

Since there's no confirmed read receipt switch, the honest options are about managing expectations and contact rather than hiding:

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • Turn off Active Status so people can't see you're online right now.
  • Turn off notifications for a chat, so you're not pulled in by every ping. Messenger's Help Centre covers how to turn notifications on or off.
  • Block the person if you don't want any contact. Blocking is covered in my guide to blocking someone on Messenger.
  • Reply later with a short message, such as, I'll come back to this tomorrow.

I'd avoid workarounds from videos that claim to read messages without the sender knowing. They're not in the official help, they change with every update and some of them involve downloading apps you shouldn't trust.

Read receipts and message requests

If someone you aren't friends with messages you, Messenger may place it in a message requests folder. Facebook has separate help articles on checking message requests. The articles I read don't mention a way to hide being seen there either, so don't assume opening a request is private.

Read receipts on Messenger for business owners and Page admins

If customers message your Page, the seen notice is a promise in the customer's mind. They see their message was read and expect an answer. A simple habit helps: when you've seen a message but can't give a full answer, send a short holding reply, such as Thanks, I've seen this and I'll reply fully by the end of the day. That's a sentence I'd write myself, not something Facebook says. It stops the silence turning into a complaint, and it's a good reason not to worry about hiding anything.

What to check if the seen notice looks wrong

  • Look at which app you're using. The notice on a computer shows a small profile picture, and the app may show a different style.
  • Update the Messenger app, since icons and menus change between versions.
  • Check whether it's a group chat. In groups, small pictures show who has seen the message.
  • If a message seems stuck, read Facebook's article on unable to send messages on Messenger, which lists causes such as app, device or connection problems.

Frequently asked questions

Can you turn off read receipts on Messenger?

The Messenger Help Centre articles I read don't document a setting that turns off read receipts in standard chats. They explain the icons for sending, sent, delivered and seen. If your app shows a setting, follow that, as menus vary by version.

Does Active Status control whether people see I've read their message?

Facebook's help describes Active Status as showing when you're active. It doesn't say it changes the seen notice, so don't rely on it for that.

What does the other person see when they've read my message?

Facebook's help says a small version of the person's profile picture appears below the message when they've seen it.

Will turning off notifications stop the seen notice?

Turning off notifications stops the alerts, but the help pages don't say it hides the seen notice.

Is there an official way to read a message privately?

Not in the Help Centre articles I read. I wouldn't use apps or tricks that promise to do it.
