Lyft pays drivers per ride, shown upfront in most cities, plus bonuses and 100% of tips. Fares depend on estimated time and distance, distance to pickup and local demand. Lyft caps its own fee at 30% of passenger payments before external fees, and pays an adjustment if it takes more over a month.
Lyft is the one rideshare app that puts a number on its own cut, and that's the most useful thing to know before you sign up. I've gone through Lyft's driver earnings page and its help centre to explain how a fare is set, what Lyft keeps, the bonuses on offer and how you can get paid the same day.
How Lyft sets driver pay for each ride
In most cities Lyft uses upfront pay: you see what a ride will pay, along with the ride details, before you accept it. Lyft says the amount depends on the estimated trip time and distance, the distance to the pickup, how many ride requests there are nearby, how many drivers are on the road and how busy the destination is.
A few places work differently. Lyft says upfront pay isn't available in Washington state, New York City and Portland. Drivers there are paid per minute and per mile at the rates set for their city.
Lyft's 30% fee cap explained
Here's the detail that sets Lyft apart. Lyft says its fee is capped at 30% of passenger payments, measured before external fees such as insurance, taxes and government charges. If Lyft's total fees for you go over 30% by the end of the month, you get an earnings adjustment to bring it back down.
That doesn't tell you what you'll make in an hour, but it does put a ceiling on how much of each passenger payment Lyft can keep over a month. It's a handy check on your monthly statement: compare what passengers paid with what reached you, and if Lyft's share ever looks higher than the cap, look for the adjustment.
Lyft bonuses: Turbo, Ride Challenges and Bonus Zones
- Turbo: earn 10 to 40% more per ride during scheduled busy times, in select regions.
- Ride Challenges: a bonus for completing a set number of rides within a set timeframe.
- Bonus Zones: drive into a zone on the map to get a bonus on your next ride.
- Scheduled rides: extra pay for wait time, in most major US cities.
Lyft's weekly planner shows all your bonuses in one place, which is worth checking before you plan your hours.
Because Lyft's fares lean on local demand, the same hour can pay very differently from one day to the next. Drivers who line their shifts up with Turbo windows and busy destinations, and who pick up Ride Challenges they'd finish anyway, tend to see more from the same time on the road. Your own earnings history in the app is the best guide to which hours suit you.
Tips on Lyft rides
Drivers keep 100% of tips. Lyft also shares a useful figure: in 2023, tips averaged 8% of driver earnings. So tips help, but they're a small slice of the total for most drivers, and the fare and bonuses do the heavy lifting.
Minimum Lyft driver pay in Washington and New York City
Where Lyft pays per minute and per mile, local rules set the floor. Washington State's Department of Labor and Industries sets a minimum from January 1, 2026. For trips that start and end outside Seattle, drivers get the greater of 0.40 US dollars per passenger platform minute plus 1.38 US dollars per mile, or 3.55 US dollars per trip. For trips that start inside Seattle, it's 0.70 US dollars per minute plus 1.63 US dollars per mile, or 6.12 US dollars per trip. The state says tips are on top and don't count towards the minimum.
In New York City, the Taxi and Limousine Commission sets a minimum for high-volume for-hire trips. From March 1, 2026 it's 1.283 US dollars per mile plus 0.681 US dollars per minute for standard trips.

How Lyft drivers get paid
Lyft gives you three options, and they suit different needs:
- Weekly payouts: free and the default. Lyft sends them on Tuesday mornings, and most drivers see the money by Friday. The pay week runs from Monday at 5 AM to the following Monday at 4:59 AM.
- Express Pay: cash out up to five times every 24 hours for a fee of 1.75 US dollars per transfer, once you've got at least 6.75 US dollars in earnings. In New York there's a 5 US dollar minimum and one cash-out a day.
- Lyft Direct: a debit card and account run with Payfare, with no payout fee on transfers.
If you cash out with Express Pay most days, those fees add up across a month, so it's worth comparing them with a fee-free option.
What Lyft drivers pay for themselves
Your car, fuel, maintenance and the time between rides are yours to cover, and you'll handle tax on your own earnings. Lyft's fee cap is measured before external fees like insurance and government charges, so those come out separately. For tax questions about your own situation, speak to an accountant.
